Dorset / Place in Dorset?
« on: Thursday 09 March 23 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening

Today I am returning to genealogy for the first time in a few years and have decided to look at the 1921 Census as a starting point.

Already I have come up with a question which I wonder if anyone could assist with. The person in question has written his place of birth but I can't work it out. I've tried lots of different possibilities to no avail. Other census from different years suggest he was born in Crewkerne or Broadwindsor. He disappears in the 18881 and 1891 so I was trying to find him via the 1921 using the new place of birth.

For info he was William Walter Warry b1858 ish.

I am attaching a copy of the entry below.

Thanks for any help

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hull Northern Cemetery MI
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 19:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I know EYFHS have now published their epic work of recording the Northern Cemetery MI's.

Just wondered if anyone is able to check if there is an entry for either Henry Taylor d6 March 1950 or Kathleen Taylor died 2nd quarter 1981?

If not, no worries, I'll check the next time I'm up in Hull.

Regards

Ian

Devon / Paignton Baptisms
« on: Monday 25 March 13 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I'm trying to find out if my 3xGGrandfather William Ellis and his second wife Charlotte had any other children that I've not found. He married in 1840 and had a child Louisa c1842 but she died, the next one I know of is Sarah Anna b1857. This is a very big gap and so I would expect there to be others who also died as they aren't in any census.

I found Louisa's baptism in a list of Paignton baptisms supplied by the DFHS but they only go up to 1843. Does anyone know how I might be able to get my hands on or if anyone would be able to search on my behalf for any others?

Thanks as always

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Cremation Records
« on: Friday 22 March 13 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Like many others I'm sure, I would like to see the cremation records held at Chanterlands Ave crematorium. Unfortunately they are not available for the public to study although the staff are brilliant at looking a service up for me. Is it only Hull's rules or the county rules or in fact the law of the land?

It would be so useful to have access, I've got at least 25 people I believe we're cremated in Hull but I can't bring myself to keep asking them to help. Well, a few a year maybe :D

Cheers

The Common Room / Death Certificate Informant Info
« on: Friday 22 March 13 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Finally found some time to start looking at the closeish family. Trying to confirm someone's death was that of my Dads uncle I ordered the death cert hoping to glean some useful info. So far it doesn't look likely.

The informant column says "R Hardy causing the body to be buried, 7 Eastern Avenue, Woodhall St, Hull".

Would I be correct in thinking this was possibly an undertaker? I've not come across the causing a body etc before. Also, would this mean he WAS buried or could he have been cremated?

Thanks as always

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Prefabs in Beverley
« on: Monday 04 June 12 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've just been chatting to my Mum and we got onto the subject of the post war prefabs. Her Grandma lived in one at 58 Watts Road, Beverley.  I hadn't been round there in the 40 years since she died until earlier this year. They are all modernish flats now but I'm sure the prefabs were grey and a bit depressing. Then again I was only seven!
I don't suppose anyone has a photo from the Watts Road area showing the prefabs?

I looked on the Treasure House catalogue but there doesn't appear to be any there :'(

Cheers

Armed Forces / British Army musicians in India
« on: Monday 28 May 12 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am trying to find some info on my wife's GGrandfather. He was in India 1892-1903 serving with the British Army, I think he was with a Worcestershire or Gloucestershire regiment. He is said to have been with the regiment's band, I do have the info about this but can't find it just at the moment. I have a recollection that the Britsh Library may have some details of the British Army in India but it looks like only officers. Does anyone know if either they or Kew may have details of non officers that could help me?

I have tried to look over Kew's catologue but haven't found anything yet and would appreciate some help.

Thanks as always

Armed Forces / Trying to find a WW1 map
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Just looking through a WW1 War Diary I have found the location of my Gt Uncle's death as a map reference. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a resource who may have a copy of the map. Would the archives at Kew be a possibility?

For reference the map is listed as "Reference Map Sheet 51B NW Edition 5A" and would be for May 1917 in the vicinity of Gavrelle north east of Arras.

Thanks as always

Gloucestershire / Leighterton
« on: Friday 18 May 12 09:25 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

I've now started researching my wife's side in the Gloucestershire area.

Could someone kindly advise me where I would be able to find the parish registers for the church in Leighterton? As usual I am interested in baptisms, burials and marriages and will need to travel to the archives for a couple of days digging ;)

Thanks as always

Ian
