Immigrants & Emigrants - General / James Dobbins
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 12:22 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help with the immigration of James Dobbins? He was born in Jamaica and came to the UK before 1910.  I understand that he landed in Liverpool and was certainly in Scotland by 1910.

With thanks for any information.

Lesley

Scotland / Hiram Dobbins 1911 census
« on: Friday 27 April 12 16:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone with access to the 1911 census could help me with Hiram Dobbins, born illegitimately in 1910 in Greenock to Jane Johnston and James Dobbins.

I am particularly interested to find the place of birth of James Dobbins, who was in fact a seaman and could indeed have been at sea at the time!

Any information would be most gratefully received.

With thanks

Hello

I understand that there is information in the Police Gazette concerning army deserters.  I am researching Private James Bright (no 2087) of the 4th Foot Regiment who fought in the Crimea war and deserted from Scutari on 17 June 1855.  I wonder if anyone can steer me in the right direction?

Many thanks

Other Countries / James Dobbins - Jamaica
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 10:23 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for help, please, in tracing the birth of James Dobbins in Jamaica in the late 1800s.  I know from his marriage (in Scotland 1916) that his mother was Lizzie Dobbins and his reputed father James Simmons.  As far as I can make out, James Simmons was a native West Indian and a seaman.

There were Dobbins's in Jamaica at that time but I do not know if Lizzie was one of these, or whether she was Scottish or even Irish.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Jane Johnston
« on: Monday 11 April 11 20:45 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please with the birth of Jane Johnston around 1892.  Her mother, also Jane (nee Laidlaw), and father, Robert, were married in Humbie in 1868, so I am assuming their daughter was born in East Lothian.

Thank you

Lesley

Hi, can anyone help please?  I am trying to track down any information on Private James Dobbins, who served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers during WW1.  He served with the 3rd Battalion and his number was, I think, 26726.  In 1916 he was at Military Camp in Duddington (?), Edinburgh.  I wonder if he saw action overseas?  He did survive the war.

Any information gratefully received.
Thank you, Lesley

Stirlingshire / Lizzie Dobbins

I am looking for information on Lizzie Dobbins.  I know very little about her, only that she had a son called James around 1880, that he was illegitimate and that the Reputed Father was a seaman also called James.  His surname may be Simmons.

I do not know if I have the correct county, only that James junior was married in Stirling.

I would be most grateful for any help.

Roxburghshire / John Laidlow of Melrose
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please?  John Laidlaw married Janet Brockie in Melrose on 30 May 1834, and I would like to find out about both their parents and any details which may be on the appropriate censuses.

Many thanks

Stirlingshire / James Dobbins

I am trying to find out more about the family of James Dobbins, born Bannockburn in 1920.  I know that his father was also James and that his mother was Jane (nee Johnston).  I believe that Jane died when her son, James, was quite young and that he and his elder brother were put into an orphanage.

Any information on James and his forebears would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Lesley
