It is with great pleasure that I announce that Ros Davies now has her own URL address and is back online with her wonderful County Down Family History website.

Please note that there are still a number of broken links that need attention, but she is working hard to have these corrected as soon as possible.

Welcome back Ros!

Ireland / Copyright and Irish Census/BMD Records

I see a lot of family history books published (and for sale) by genealogy hobbyists which include images of Irish census and BMD records. Are they violating UK copyright laws?

Down / Births of John (c.1903) and Robert (c.1906) Flanngan/Flanigan/Flanagan
« on: Tuesday 27 March 18 04:12 BST (UK)  »
The 1911 census has Roas [sic - Rose] Ann Flanngan [sic - Flana(i)gan] with three sons, identified as "adopted" ... https://goo.gl/6u2cWP. The eldest son James was born out of wedlock to Rose Ann on 11 November 1899 in Ballywoollen [sic - Ballywillin] (https://goo.gl/MEf4gL).

It should be easy, but I am unable to find the births for her two other sons (John and Robert). According to the census they appear to have been born out of wedlock in County Down.

Can anyone help?

Down / Marriage of McGraw/Megraw & McAlister/McAllister
« on: Friday 30 June 17 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of Charles McGraw/Megraw to Kate (Catherine) McAlister/McAllister. Their religion was Roman Catholic.

I believe their first child was John Megraw born in Belfast (Hamilton St.) in 1883. Charles, a sailor, died in 1890 at the age of 29 years (death was registered in Downpatrick). This evidence points to a marriage ca. 1880, but I can find nothing in the civil registration or Roman Catholic records.

Catherine "McGraw" (nee McAlister) was living in Ardglass, Co. Down in 1901 & 1911.

Is there an online resource available that would give me the area (e.g. sq. km) for each of the civil registration districts in Ireland?

The Common Room / Approximating Father's Year of Birth from Child's DOB
« on: Saturday 10 December 16 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if there is an acceptable method of estimating a father's approximate year of birth knowing the birth date of his first child. The example I have is a child born in England on 1 Aug 1711. I have read that a generation is approximately 30-35 years, but can't see how to apply that here.

Taking it a step further, if the birth year of the father can be approximated, is it possible to extrapolate further back, say to the child's grandfather?

Thanks

I have a copy of a will from PRONI that states "I leave and bequeath to my son James the balance remaining due upon the last security my son Robert and I gave him namely the sum of Forty Five Pounds sterling."

Can someone tell me what is meant by "the balance remaining due upon the last security"?
