London and Middlesex / Location of laundry in 1920s (?) London
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a copy of a photo of my 2xgreat grandmother and her colleagues standing outside the laundry where they worked, going by their hairstyles it looks like it was taken in the late 1910s or 1920s but possibly early 1930s. The name of the laundry is 'Mrs Pain - Laundry Specialists' and the photo shows the ladies standing outside what looks like a shop type laundry rather than an industrial laundry, with a number '9' above the doorway.

My 2x great grandmother lived in Fulham but I'd like to find the location of the laundry, I'm assuming it's in Fulham or a surrounding area. Can anyone help me to locate 'Mrs Pain - Laundry Specialists'?

Something I love from the photo is that there's a sign in the window saying 'party frocks are washed in 12 hours'.

Many thanks.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Newbury 1817 baptism lookup please
« on: Wednesday 13 May 20 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

If anyone has access to the Newbury baptism records from the 1810s can you please do a lookup for me - for some reason none of these are in the Berkshire Baptism Index on FindMyPast (which is frustrating).

I'm looking for a Charles Willis born about 1817. I'm suspecting his parents were Samuel and Lucy Willis but I'd like confirmation of who they were, plus Samuel's occupation. Also, if anyone has time, can you please let me know of any siblings of Charles.

Many thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Merchant Navy CR10 - 'renewal' query
« on: Sunday 08 March 20 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've found the CR10 record for an ancestor of mine. His record has an entry for his 'No. of Identity Certificate' (497388), some personal details including his DOB, a photo, and written on the side of the document is 'renewal'.  As his name was 'William Smith' his name is too common. I haven't found anything in the CR2 series which could be a match as only year of birth seems to be given and no identity certificate number. His CR10 doesn't list any ship ID's.

My question is, presumably the 'renewal' means he was staying on in the MN - can anyone confirm this? Also, is there a way to match up CR10 and CR2 records if I don't have a discharge number?

Thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Service records from 1921
« on: Wednesday 04 March 20 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

My ancestor served in WW1 and was demobilised in 1919 however in 1921 he was called back up again due to 'an emergency' but only for 6 weeks. I have his original pay book which gives his WW1 service numbers and what appears to be a longer digit service number. I've had no luck finding his service records in the WW1 collection, as is to be expected, but I was wondering - do you think it's worth applying via gov.uk to see if they have a copy of his service record due to him being called back up in 1921?

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Ancestry genetic relationship proof of consanguinity?
« on: Wednesday 09 October 19 16:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've just received a new 'match' on Ancestry DNA that may help me break down a wall but I'm interested in other people's thoughts.

I've long suspected that my granddad's parents were 1st cousins - it's been hard to prove as the parents (my 2x great grandparents) of his mother never married but lived together for several years so I have no marriage certificate to confirm father's names. However, this new DNA match may help to solve this.

This new DNA match ('match one') is definitely my third cousin once removed with our common ancestors being my 3x great grandparents - our trees confirm this. Ancestry says we share 139cM, which according to their chart says most people sharing this amount of DNA are:

49%   likely to be 2nd cousin 1x removed, Half 2nd cousin, 1st cousin 3x removed or Half 1st cousin 2x removed

30%   likely to be 2nd cousin,1st cousin 2x removed, Half 1st cousin 1x removed, Half 2nd great-aunt/uncle or Half 2nd great-niece/nephew

with only 2% likely to be 3rd cousins once removed.

So, of my 3x great grandparents, match one is descended from child one and I'm definitely descended from child two and possibly also child 3. These children were all born in the 1840s and 1850s. Another Ancestry DNA match (match 2) shares 129cm with me and is also likely descended from child one but has no tree online for me to confirm how match 1 and match 2 are related. Ancestry just says match 2 is descended from the same 3x great grandparents.

My question is, would you take this DNA match result to mean that I am actually more closely related to match 1 than I otherwise should be, and that this is the proof I have that my great-grandparents were 1st cousins?

I hope those ramblings make sense.

Thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / The Green Howards, 1921
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

We've recently discovered some documents my great-grandfather kept from his time in the army. He served during the entirety of WW1 and was discharged in 1919 but there is another document from 1921 that, if possible, I hope someone can shed some more light on as to what my great-grandfather was doing.

It's a duty certificate that states his name, rank, reg number, for 'Depot The Green Howards'. It says he 'has served continuously in the emergency from April 1921 to June 1921'.

Can anyone tell me what the 'emergency' was? Was this the troubles in Ireland? And what was the role of the Green Howards at this time?

Many thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Unusual National Identity Card ID - Help
« on: Monday 03 April 17 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I recently read in the LostCousins newsletter that the series of letters on the top left hand corner of WW2 identity cards is the same as the enumeration district a person was living in at the time of the 1939 register (http://lostcousins.com/newsletters2/latemar17news.htm). Great I thought, I've been trying to locate one of my great-aunts in the 1939 register for some time with no luck and I have her National Identity Card from 1945, the one she received after she married. The enumeration district says 'YFFP' and the numbers are '234:5790'. But I can't work out where 'YFF' or 'YFFP' is, or why her number is so large! I've consulted the FindMyPast.co.uk 1939 district page http://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/1939-register-enumeration-districts and this page: http://kiwitrees.net/1939-register-enumeration-districts/ but neither lists a 'YFF' or 'YFFP'.

My great-aunt was born in London in 1927 and wasn't living with her mother at the time of the register, I assume she'd been evacuated as other relatives of mine of that age were. My great-aunt died in 2002 so her 1939 record should be open but I can't find it.

If anyone can shed some light on where the enumeration district was from her identity card I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks,
Paula

Northumberland Lookup Requests / 1772 Morpeth marriage lookup request
« on: Thursday 08 September 16 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If anyone has access to the original Morpeth marriage records I'd really appreciate a lookup. The marriage was between Thomas Young and Rebecca Jaiston, and took place on 23rd February 1772. Unfortunately the online bishops transcripts at FamilySearch are missing that year. I'd appreciate knowing any additional information that was provided in the marriage entry. It seems as though the person writing in the bishops transcripts around that time did provide more details, such as bachelor, spinster, widow etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Paula

Armed Forces / Does anyone recognise this regiment insignia?
« on: Friday 04 September 15 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This photo is of my great-grandfathers younger brother, Alfred, who served in the Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) 2nd Bn during WW2. We know that he was a career soldier and this photo must have been taken in the late 1920s or 1930s. Alfred was to eventually die in Burma in 1945.

Does anyone know what regiment this insignia is from that Alfred is wearing? I know it's not the clearest but it sort of looks like a tree coming out of a ball to my completely untrained eye.

Thanks in advance,
Paula
