London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / What was a pedestrian trainer?
« on: Friday 29 May 09 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Can anyone help me.  On a census return one of my ancestors was a 'Pedestrian Trainer'.  Wondering if anyone would know exactly what the job might have entailed.

Many thanks

Hi, can anyone help me please.  I have found my family on the 1871 census, (all be it the name was misspelt) under the following:

RG9/52 Folio 143 Page 30

They were the RAYNER family.  I have them living in Lambeth, which in that era was classed as Surrey.  When I tried to find the street name, the enumerator had just written 'Continued'.  I tried going back over the various images, but when I came to the sheet showing the start of their street, where the name should have been written, the corner of the page had been torn away!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can identify the family's exact address?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Can anyone help date this photo for me. Its either my great grandfather who married in 1868 age 23, (wife was 21) or his oldest son who married in 1893 age 22 (wife was 19).  I'd say the photo was taken not long after one or other marriage.  Was wondering if there was anyone out there with enough knowledge of Victorian fashions to give an informed guess as to which of the two dates its likely to be.

If it helps, I know that Griffiths photographers moved to Bow Common Lane, Bow but I'm not sure when.  If anyone can establish what dates they were operating at Armach Road, Bow it might give a bit more insight into the date the photo would have been taken.

Be very grateful to anyone who can help........oh and if anyone wants to give the image a digital cleanup that would be an added bonus.

Many thanks

Devon Lookup Requests / Amelia Elizabeth P SMEE birth
« on: Monday 05 November 07 20:18 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the birth of Amelia Elizabeth P SMEE who various censuses show as being born in Devon, approximately 1866.  However I've searched the indexes between 1861 and 1868 but can find no birth registration that fits.  I have found various siblings, some born in Devon and some in London.  I have her age 5 with parents William and Louisa in the 1871 census living in Chelsea, London.  I also have her marriage index to James Burrell, Q3 1884 West Ham.  However her birth registration is eluding me.  ???
Can anyone help me locate her?
Thanks TD

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Marriage index lookup please Bury
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
According to the BMD marriage index my cousin William D Mennie married in Q1 1957 reference is District: Bury, vol: 10b, page: 1658.  The surname of the lady he married was Thompson.  However when I searched the Thompson listings in the relevant quarter so that I could find her fist name but I couldn't find a Thompson who had married a spouse with the surname of Mennie.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can locate the other half of the index entry?

Many thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Please date
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 05:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I believe this to be a photo of my aunt born in 1896. However, I'm trying to put a rough date on it so that I can try to identify the children.  The photo was taken in the East End of London. I think the boy looks around 10 years old and the little girl about 2 years old.  Can anyone give me guidance on that?
Appreciate your help on this.
Many thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / BMD Death Index lookup London Complete
« on: Saturday 18 August 07 17:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi can anyone help me?

Right from a young child I was made aware that a large number of my relatives were killed in single air raid in WW2 when the shelter in which they had sought refuge received direct hits from HE bombs.  However I am only just uncovering the whole sad story.

For some reason I can find no entries for any of the relatives on the Free BMD Index on Ancestry and wonder if anyone can tell me why, or help me find them.

All were killed on the night of 27 July 1941, in Broomfield Street, Poplar, London, (it could be referred to as Bromley, Middlesex).  All were related, although some, through marriage, had different surnames to their parents, who also perished.

The deteails are:

Victoria Jublilee Mitchell nee Rusz age 54
John Alfred Mitchell age 57
Alan James Mitchell age 6
Dennis Albert Mitchell age 16
Harry Lewis Mitchell age 19, (Firewatcher)
Ronald Robert Mitchell age 13
Stanley Mitchell age 12

William Arthur Samuels age 37 (Home Guard)
? Alice A Samuels nee Mitchell age unknown

Clara Eleanor Dove nee Mitchell age 30 (she was pregnant with first child and had only just returned from being an evacuee)
Ernest George Dove age 31

Charles James Frederick Lovell age 2
Doreen May Lovell age 9 (Could be listed as Doreen May Mitchell as she was the daughter of Victoria Jubilee Mitchell nee Rusz)
May Emma Lovell nee Mitchell age 37

I appreciate there are a great many people in my list.  But it is a heart rending story.  Most of the individuals are listed on the CWGC site, however I would so much love to find their documentation and to be able to pay my own tribute.

Many thanks for any help or guidance anyone can give.
