Stirlingshire / Visiting Slamannan
« on: Saturday 15 September 07 09:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm coming up to Scotland next week and hoping to go to Slamannan where some of my Forrest family lived from the late 1800s to at least the 1930s.

A great uncle and aunt lived in the town and I want to find out whether they died there. Is there a cemetary for the area with records available to view?

I've posted a similar request for Whitburn on the West Lothian board.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Visiting Whitburn, Forrest family
« on: Saturday 15 September 07 09:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm travelling to Scotland next week and thinking of visiting Whitburn to see if I can find out more about my Forrest family.

Can anyone tell me if there is a cemetary there with records available? Also where would any other records for the area be located?

Thanks in anticipation.

Derry (Londonderry) / Co Derry 1911 Directory lookup please.
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 15:57 BST (UK)  »
From the Ulster Covenant 1912, I have found a Thomas Forrest, of Ballyquinn, Co Derry. I would be grateful for more information about this person and his family that may be gleaned from the relevant Directory.

The member of family I am looking for is Thomas Naismith Forrest, c aged 37 in 1911, married to Grace Ann Jane m.s. Stewart. There should also be a son. They came over from Scotland some time after 1900, but I don't have an address. All I have is a photo of the three of them taken by a photographer with premises in Belfast and Newtownards.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Antrim / Forrests in Belfast, where do I start?
« on: Thursday 09 August 07 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I have a wonderful postcard photo of a small family group, husband, wife and son, and I'm trying to identify who they are. They are dressed in Salvation Army uniform and the shot was taken, I suspect, prior to WW1.

I'm fairly sure the father is a Scottish member of my Forrest family, but the photographer is R Lyttle, 44 Dublin Rd Belfast, 'The only official photographer to the Irish Football Association'.  I do remember from the 1950s, at least one member of the Forrest family who lived in Belfast, so they had probably gone to live there at that time.

I would be grateful for suggestions as to where I should start my research.

Scotland / Use of the word 'cousin'
« on: Saturday 21 July 07 18:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a card sent in 1910 by someone I believe to be an aunt, addressed to someone in Slamannan, I think is her neice.

However, it begins 'dear cousin'. I'm fairly sure of the identity of the recipient (I say fairly sure because it's addressed to Mrs Angus McLean, so I don't actually have her christian name, but I'm pretty sure I know who married him). Frustratingly, the sender only signs themself with their initials, so more uncertainty.

However, was the word 'cousin' used loosely at that time, or can I assume that the sender is unlikely to be an aunt?

Any thoughts gratefully received.
