Lancashire Lookup Requests / Layfield Birth lookup, Lancashire
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 02:54 GMT (UK)  »
I did a search on Ancestry.com the other night -- Free BMD, 1837-1983 and came up with the birth of a Charles Allan Layfield, b. 1898, Jan/Feb/Mar Qtr, in West Derby, Lancashire.. the reference given was vol 8b, pg 508.  I need to figure out who the parents of Charles Allan Layfield were, and any other information that might be available in the record.   Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide....

I am trying to figure out who/what was at the 1 Pomona Street Address in Mount Pleasant in October 1886.

When my great grandmother was registering a death of one of her children, she gave this address as the place of death of the child and also as the *residence of informant.*   Prior to, and following the death , her address was at a different location, so I'm assuming that 1 Pomona Street may have been a hospital or some sort of health clinic where they may have been staying.  I have located some Pomona Street addresses, but it seems like Pomona Street was a business district

Can anyone help me out with this.

Thank you.... gail

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can this photo be made sharper
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 18:40 BST (UK)  »
This is a picture of my grandfather's brother, Walter, a British Home Child, (the older gentleman) come to Canada in 1907.  It is the only one I have of him.  Can anything be done to improve the quality of this picture?  Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

PS... can anyone tell me about the uniform the younger child is wearing?  Was that a popular fashion back in those days.... I'm thinking this picture was probably taken around 1930ish??

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Death notice, obituary, LAYFIELD
« on: Monday 13 August 07 04:35 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to locate a death notice or obituary for my grandfather William Allen Layfield who died 3 September 1958.  While I am not sure about place of death, I do know that he is buried in Englefield Green.   I have a picture of his gravesite and on the back there is a notation indicating Parish of St. Jude's in background.  I had contacted St. Jude's but was informed that the cemetery is not connected with that church.

Any ideas as to how I might obtain a copy of an obituary?  Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide...

I had identified my grandfather and his brother Walter and William Layfield in the Cheshire, Styal Chorlton Union Cottage Home in 1901, have written to the Archives in Manchester and they have confirmed that it is my  grandfather and his brother; it has listed them as deserted by their mother Harriett Leighfield (widow).

I have also a reference in 1901 in the Chorlton Union Workhouse of a Harriet Layfield, widow, 38  RG 13/3673, folio 164, page 31... school teacher, born Ripon, Yorkshire.

I am trying to determine if this is the boys' mother, and if so, was she an inmate of the Workhouse or an employee of the workhouse.

I had found listings of the 1881 Chorlton Workhouse in Worthington and am wondering if there are comparable listings for 1901.  Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Baptism lookup--Layfield, Leyfield, Leighfield
« on: Saturday 11 August 07 20:30 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine parentage for my grandfather, William Allen Layfield, and his brother, Walter William Layfield so am wondering if there is a way to look up baptism records for them.   Birth records have not been found for either of them.  A father's name and the mother's maiden name is my goal at this point.

In 1901 the boys were at the Chorlton Union Cottage Home, and records from the home indicate that Walter was born in July, 1897 and William was born December 29, 1891.   It showed that their mother, Harriet Leighfield, a widow, had deserted them.

Information from their military papers in Canada show Walter being born in Handforth, Lancashire, England and William being born in Manchester, England.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated... Thank you.

The Common Room / British Home Child - William Allen LAYFIELD
« on: Tuesday 10 July 07 02:02 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information or locate descendants of William Allen Layfield (Leighfield) and Walter William Layfield who were British Home Child sent to Canada in 1907. They both came out of the Manchester and Salford Boys and Girls home, and it is believed there may have been one sister who died young.  While I am not exactly sure of their birthdates, indications are that Walter was born in 1897 and William was born Dec 29, 1891.

William returned to England later in life and re-married an Evelyn Gough.  He had two girls by this marriage-- Joan and Sylvia.   Sylvia married a Shaw gentleman; and Joan married a gentleman by the name of Chuck Zasada (not exactly sure if this is the correct spelling).   I would like to hear from anyone with information about this family.  Thanks in advance for any assistance....
