Devon / Hunts in Barnstaple
« on: Saturday 22 October 22 08:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering if there are any Hunts here with Hunt ancestors in Barnstaple. I've shared my family research info (so far) with my Hunt brothers who both live in Devon and they are really excited by my Barnstaple findings, although there is much still to discover, I am sure!
I have:-
John Dennis Hunt (and Margaret Harry) Ironmonger [Abt 1777-1855] Ironmonger (my 3x gt grandfather)
John Hunt 12, Joy Street, Silversmith and Watchmaker (2xgt grandfather) and Mary Ann Parnell.
William Hunt, Ironmonger 35&36 High Street.(Abt 1807-1897)

I did ask a question about my Hunt ancestors 10 years ago and had a lot of helpful responses, for which I was most grateful.  I'm asking again after all this time as it might be read by someone new. If anyone has these in their family ancestry I'd be fascinated to learn more.
Many thanks for reading,

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1901 Census look up request please.
« on: Sunday 16 May 21 17:31 BST (UK)  »
*Now Completed, many thanks*

Please could I request a look up to find 1901 Census details for my mum’s grandmother (for my mum who is 90)
Her name was Violet Florence Garner, date of birth 17 September 1880, birthplace Wolverton, Bucks.
I’d be very grateful if anyone could find her in 1901.
If it helps, her father was William Garner, coach maker/body builder and mother was Elizabeth Emma, living in Wolverton.
With thanks.

I wonder, is it possible for someone to make these death certificates clearer?  I scanned and saved them and unfortunately they are too blurred to read.

Many thanks KateW

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Unable to read death certs for John and Elizabeth Case
« on: Friday 31 October 14 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I have revisited my Family Tree records for West Derby (Liverpool) and am looking at copies of two death certificates for my 3 x Gt grandparent John and Elizabeth Case, which I scanned to save on my laptop.  I am unable to find the paper copies (really careless, I know!!) and the scanned copies are too pixelated to read with accuracy.  I am hoping someone can help me by either suggesting a way to make the saved image clearer or kindly looking for the record for me.
The certificates are for West Derby and Toxteth Park. The first is for John Case, occupation Carter, possibly 1875/6 and I think it says he was 68.  The second for his widow Elizabeth Case which is dated (I think) Nineteenth September 1898, she was aged 84. There is a number which might help - DYC ??7604.
Is it possible to clarify the image, I wonder?
Thanks

World War One / World War 1 soldier's diaries. Which Regiment?
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 21:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me work out which regiment my husband's great uncle was in?  I have his beautifully handwritten diaries dating from November 1914 to 29th May 1916 when he was returned to England injured on a hospital boat.  These are small leather bound pocket diaries written in pencil.  They log the day to day routine and include a detailed description of life on the front and in the trenches.

The first page has written :- Diary of Sgt (?) H E Read 1944 A Co.  No 4 Platoon.
Also written on this page are other references to:- 219 A Co, 15th Warwicks, 95th Brigade and 32nd Division.

I can not see any other clues to help me find out which regiment he is attached to. He writes a few references to other soldiers coming and going, for example the Highland Light Infantry.  Many of the entries are written with humour, most of it is quite frank and descriptive but he sounds quite stoic.  In June 1915 he describes the wonderful sight of the countryside a 'glorious view. Fields of poppies and cornflowers all around'.

I have started to transcribe these diaries but would love to find out more about him.
Many thanks

Technical Help / Family Tree maker 2005 and Windows 8 - advice please!
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have searched the many similar topics within this technical help section but can not find an exact answer to my problem.  I'm hoping someone can advise me, please.
I have had FTM 2005, probably since about 2006 and years of research and many many family details (as you can imagine!)  It has been loaded on an old work XP Netbook since I bought a new Laptop with Windows 7 several years ago and now the Netbook has to have Windows 7 (or 8 if it will run it) loaded.  I understand that FTM 2005 will not run on Windows 7 or 8 and here is my problem.  Can I save the information I have on the Netbook onto a memory stick/ external hard drive and if so, how can I access the information in the future?  I am having a bit of a panic as I fear I will lose all my family history.  ??? I thought about printing out all the information but that would be an enormous task.
Is it possible to transfer the information onto a more up to date programme?  Is there a programme on-line that I could save all the details onto?  Presumably over the years with developing technology this will become a problem again sometime.

Thanks

Does anyone recognise what this object, found in my late mother-in-laws needlework box is?  I have no idea which makes it hard to start searching for clues!

Canada / W Maurice Box and A E Hammond, CEF Quebec. First World War.
« on: Sunday 24 March 13 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
We have a small French carriage clock (made circa 1895 - 1900) which belonged to my grandmother with an engraved inscription:
'With best wishes to A E Hammond from W Maurice Box, January 30th 1915'

I have been told that an A E Hammond died on April 30th 1915 during the Great War.  He was serving in the 7th Battalion Canadian Infantry.  The first Canadian Infantry Force arrived in France  from Canada on December 21st 1913.

Now I have several questions which I hope someone may help me with.
Is the AEH mentioned above the same one who was gifted this clock?
Maybe Maurice Box was a fellow soldier who travelled as part of the CEF to France.
Was the clock bought in France and gifted before they went into battle?
Who were Maurice Box and E A Hammond?
Did E A Hammond die just 3 months after being given this clock?
Lastly, how did this clock come to belong to my grandmother?  To my knowledge, neither of the two men were connected to my family.

I am hoping that some further research may reveal something of interest and that a kind Rootschatter may help find information to help me.

Thanks,
KateW

Any help appreciated.
