I am looking for any information on Robert William Roy Rankin (b. 1894 USA d. 1957 Claremont) and particlarly his wife EVA STELLA RANKIN (nee Russell) (b.1901 England d. 1988 Claremont) and their family. Also, Eva's mother Esther Alice Ramsay (nee Taylor also Russell). I am trying to find out what happened to this branch of the family once they emigrated to India and then S Africa in early to mid 20th century.

Many thanks.

South Africa / EVA STELLA RANKIN
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know, or can anyone find out anything, about EVA STELLA RANKIN (b. 13/06/1901, London as Eva Stella Russell) who emigrated to S Africa circa 1957. I have a Passenger List dated 19/04/1957 stating that she was visiting the UK for 5 months, but that her future residence was going to be in S Africa. She was probably a widow or divorced from her husband Robert W Rankin. She formerly lived in Madras, India and her mother Esther Alice Ramsay may have been with her.

I would be especially interested to know if she died in S Africa and when, or whether she had any children.

Many Thanks

In particular, I am trying to trace the family of EVA RUSSELL b. 1901 London who married ROBERT WILLIAM R RANKIN b. 1884 Nebraska (Irish / Scottish parents) in 1920s Eton, Bucks. They lived in Bombay where Robert was an engineer. Eva's mother ESTHER ALICE RAMSAY b. 1882 ish joined them circa 1936. I want to find out whether they died in India, and whether they have any descendents.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / FRENCH family, Portsmouth and Kent
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information about my great-grandfather's (Robert French b. 1891, Gillingham) siblings. I lose track of them after the 1901 census which has them living in Gillingham. However, I suspect the brothers may have joined the Marines or Army and ended up in Portsmouth. Daisy may have emigrated to America with her mother.

They are:

Joseph Robert French b. 15 Dec 1879, Portsmouth
Daisy Ada French b. 01 Oct 1881, Portsmouth
Violet Lillian May French b.1884, Gillingham
Ada Madeline French b. 1885, Gillingham
William Francis French b. 15 May 1887, Gillingham
George French b. 15 Mar 1889, Gillingham
Harry French b. 08 Sep 1893

Parents: Joseph French b. 1847, Gillingham and Ada Madeline Wilkins b. 1860, Portsmouth

Any information about what happened to them (or their mother) would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Australia / First Fleet Births
« on: Monday 18 May 09 16:09 BST (UK)  »

My gggg-grandmother, according to at least 2 census records, was born in Botany Bay in 1787.

From what I can surmise from internet searches, the First Fleet left Portsmouth, England in 1787 arriving in Australia in January 1788. I can only assume therefore that my relative was born during or shortly after the journey.

It appears that there were 22 births (13 males and 9 females) on the journey. Does anyone know whether a list of these babies exist, or of babies born soon after arrival.

My gggg-grandmother was called Sarah and returned to Portsmouth where she married James Berry probably around 1810-1818.

Thanks

Just found this recently launched site - definitely worth a look - one central place to track down BMD and census info and parish records for Norfolk.

can search by place, name, etc. Also provides useful links.

Not exhaustive, but should grow.

m. Mary Ann Hollaway and lived at Stargroves, Berkshire

It would make my dad's year (decade) if I could find a picture to show him.

Other Countries / INDIA: RANKIN / RUSSELL
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on Robert William R RANKIN b. 1894 Nebraska, US (English though) and his wife Eva Stella RUSSELL b. 1901 London, UK. They married in 1927 in Eton, Bucks, England. I have then found them in two Passenger lists entering the US (May 1936) and UK (Jun 1936)respectively. They are described as living in Madras, India and he is a Civil Engineer.  I know they were also living there in 1933. Eva is my ggrandfather's step-daughter and I would love to know what happened to her and whether she had any children.

Thanks
