Yorkshire (West Riding) / George Armitage and Kezia Richards
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've hit a bit of a dead-end with George and Kezia Armitage. Working backwards:

1861:

George   Armatage   Head         Married   Male      54   1807   Mason   Yorkshire, England
... [Kezia]  Armatage   Wife         Married   Female 54   1807   -   -
George   Armatage   Son         Unmarried   Male      22   1839   Moulder   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Jemima   Armatage   Daughter Unmarried   Female 20   1841   -           Barnsley, Yorkshire,
Samuel   Armatage   Son          Unmarried   Male      18   1843   Mason   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Benjamin   Armatage   Son          Unmarried   Male      16   1845   Moulder   Rotherham, Yorkshire

'Kezia' is clearly a tricky name to transcribe. It's also tricky (for me at least) to read where George and Kezia where born. I've attached an image of this section of document - maybe you can read it?!

1851:

George     Arimatige   Head          Married   Male           45   1806   Mason   Hall Green, Yorkshire
Kezia       Arimatige   Wife          Married   Female   44   1807   -   Nottingham
John          Arimatige   Son          Unmarried   Male           16   1835   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire
Ann          Arimatige   Daughter   -           Female   15   1836   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
William     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   13   1838   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
George     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   12   1839   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Jemima    Arimatige   Daughter   -            Female   10   1841   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Samuel     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   8   1843   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Benjamin   Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   5   1846   Scholar   Rotherham, Yorkshire
Arthur       Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   2   1849   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire

In 1841:

George Armitage   Male           30   1811   Yorkshire, England
Cassia  Armitage   Female   30   1811   -
John      Armitage   Male           6   1835   -
Ann      Armitage   Female   5   1836   Yorkshire, England
William Armitage   Male           4   1837   Yorkshire, England
George Armitage   Male           3   1838   Yorkshire, England
Jemima Armitage   Female   1   1840   Yorkshire, England

I have found a marriage record from Nottinghamshire in 1830:

First name(s)   George
Last name   Armitage
Name note   -
Marriage year   1830
Marriage date   26 Jul 1830
Marriage place   Radford
Spouse's first name(s)   Kezia
Spouse's last name   Richards
County   Nottinghamshire

Which is the only marriage I ca find between a George Armitage and a 'Kezia'. I've played around with other spellings of 'Kezia' but haven't found anything else.

I cannot find a plausible Kezia Richards in the parish records anywhere, and I am struggling to narrow down the number of George Armitage possibilities (understanding his birth place would help!).

Anything you can suggest would be much appreciated :)

Staffordshire / Who is Agnes Wilson?
« on: Monday 26 November 18 14:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've hit an odd record and a bit of a brick wall. I've been following family lines back from a Jane Elizabeth Lomax (b. 9th May 1887, baptised 31st Jan 1888 in Mayfield, Derbyshire and then seemingly again on 26th June 1889 in Attercliffe, Yorkshire) Her parents are Edward Lomax and Agnes.

In 1891 I can find a family in Geasbrough, Rotherham, Yorkshire, which consists of:

Edward   Lomax   Head          Married   Male           43   1848   -
Agnes   Lomax   Wife          Married   Female   43   1848   -   Duffield, Derbyshire,
Jane E   Lomax   Daughter   -           Female   3   1888   -   Staffordshire, England
Edward   Lomax   Son           -           Male   0           1891   -   Yorkshire, England

Which seems to match the birth record of Jane Elizabeth Lomax well

In 1901 I can find them again, this time in Attercliffe, Sheffield:

Edward Lomax   Head         Married Male   48   1853      Manchester, Lancashire
Agnes   Lomax   Wife         Married Female   44   1857      Duffield, Yorkshire
May       Lomax   Daughter Single     Female   16   1885      Mayfield, Derbyshire
Jane E   Lomax   Daughter Single     Female   13   1888      Mayfield, Derbyshire,
Edward  Lomax   Son         Single     Male   7   1894      Masbrough, Yorkshire
Ellen       Lomax   Daughter Single     Female   6   1895      Sheffield, Yorkshire

Weirdly, Edward and Agnes don't appeared to have aged much. I know people's ages can be a bit flexible, but Agnes is only recorded as a year older. Despite this, I think they're the same people.

There are very few marriage records between Edward Lomaxes and Agneses, and only one that makes sense:

Edward Lomax & Agnes Wilson, 25th December 1873, Mayfield, Staffordshire

Edward's father: James Lomax
Agnes' father: Joseph Rogers (??)

When I look at the image itself, Joseph Rogers has a line drawn through it. Is this a mistake or mistranscription? Was Agnes actually illegitimate, and the father they wrote in was a mistake?

I have searched for 'Agnes Wilson' and 'Agnes Rogers' pre 1873, but can't find anything that makes sense. Can anyone help?

Derbyshire / Vanished Standish 1861
« on: Sunday 25 November 18 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am struggling a bit with my ancestors, the Standishes.

Sarah Standish was married to George Armitage on the 21st Feb 1886 in Sheffield, and her father is recorded as John Standish, a smith.

In subsequent censuses as Sarah Armitage she puts her birth place as Dronfield, Derbyshire, in circa 1851.

I've searched for Sarah Standish on the census and the only likely record I can find is a Sarah Standish in 1851. Her birthplace is Dronfield, and her father is a blacksmith called John Standish, so this feels pretty likely.

The problem I face is that the whole family seems to disappear after 1851.

In 1851 the family is:

John   Standish       Head   Married   Male           29   1822   Blacksmith   Norton, Derbyshire
Anne   Standish       Wife   Married   Female   29   1822     -               Eckington, Derbyshire
Hemely Standish    Daughter   -   Female   9   1842     -                Dronfield, Derbyshire
Susannah Standish Daughter   -   Female   7   1844     Scholar        Dronfield, Derbyshire
Harriet Standish        Daughter   -   Female   5   1846     Scholar        Dronfield, Derbyshire
Robin Standish        Son           -   Male           2   1849   -                Dronfield, Derbyshire
Sarah Standish        Daughter   -   Female   0   1851     -                Dronfield, Derbyshire

However, I can't find any of them on the census after 1851. From searching baptism records, it appears they had four further children:

Henry Standish           Bap: 1853 (And I think died in 1853)
John Arthur Standish   Bap: 1859
Martha Standish          Bap: 1859
Samuel Standish         Bap: 1859  (And I think died in 1859)

But I can't find Martha or John Arthur  in 1861 or subsequently. Can anyone help me find John, Anne and their daughter Sarah in 1861, 1871 or 1881?

Also, can anyone interpret the name 'Hemely'?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Untangling Andersons
« on: Monday 05 November 18 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
In my family tree there is a Matthew Blythe (1837 - 1874; Sancton, East Yorkshire).

He can be found in the 1871 census in Newbald, married to a Sarah Jane (birth circa. 1836 in Hutton Cranswick). I am trying to get my head around who Sarah Jane is.

In 1881 Matthew has died, but Sarah Jane Blythe can still be found in Newbald along with three of her children, still reporting her birthplace as Hutton Cranswick.

In 1891 Sarah Jane Blythe cannot be found... but a widowed Jane Blythe can be found in Newbald; birthplace Hutton Cranswick.

1901 is similar - a widowed Jane Blythe in Newbald, born in Hutton Cranswick.

I think Sarah Jane and Jane are likely to be the same person - my evidence for this is as follows:

In 1881 Sarah Jane Blythe has a daughter called 'Jemima Blythe'. The birth record for Jemima in 1874 states the mother's maiden name is 'Anderson'.

I searched marriage records for a Matthew Blythe to an Anderson anywhere in England during the 1800s and found one result - Matthew Blythe marrying a Jane Anderson in 1861 in Scarborough.

My working theory is that Jane sometimes went by the name Sarah Jane, and then she reverted to Jane after her husband died.

I have a copy of the certificate of the 1861 marriage, which states that Jane's father was a George Anderson, agricultural labourer. I have hit a bit of a brick wall in tracking down which George and Jane Anderson are 'mine' on the 1841 - 1861 censuses, with the added complexity that she could possibly be called 'Sarah' or 'Sarah Jane' - can anyone help cut through the tangled mess of Andersons?

Thanks!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Struggling with Longfields
« on: Thursday 01 November 18 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm hitting a lot of dead-ends whilst tracing my ancestors, the Longfields.

Firstly, Samuel Coates Longfield. Samuel was baptised in 1826 in North Newbald, with his mother recorded as Hannah Longfield (no father).

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses he appears as a lodger with the Teale family in Newbald, along with a Frederick Longfield (sometimes transcribed as 'Lengfield'). According to the census, Frederick was born in 1836. Researching this, there is a baptism record from 1835 in Newbald which names Hannah Longfield (or 'Lengfield') as his mother. Once again, no father. I feel confident in assuming Frederick and Samuel are at least half-brothers. I can find Frederick again in 1861, this time in Malton and with the Peacock family.

First mystery - where does Frederick go after 1861? I can't find him again!

Whilst searching for Longfield baptisms I found another interesting one - Elizabeth Ann Longfield, baptised 1830 in North Dalton, once again with only Hannah Longfield listed as a parent. North Dalton isn't particularly far from North Newbald, and it seems coincidental that there would be another Hannah Longfield so close, but then family history is full of such traps. I've tried to find her on the 1841 census (or, indeed, any census) to no avail.

Second mystery - what happens to Elizabeth Ann Longfield?

Hannah herself is a mystery. I've tried looking for her on the census and there is a plausible sighting in 1841, a Hannah Lengfield born around 1801 who is living with Frances and Mary Kirby in Newbald. Unfortunately, there are no identifying children, and I can't be sure she is 'my' Hannah. There is then a marriage record from Fridaythorpe in 1847 of a Hannah Longfield (born circa 1801) marrying a John Wake. She is possibly (likely?) the 1841 census Hannah, but still, is she my Hannah?

Back to Samuel. In 1853 Samuel Coates Longfield gets married - and on the parish record for his marriage he names his father as Samuel Coates, a farmer. Is this a real person? If so - I can't find any particularly plausible candidates.

I've been going round in circles with this, I'm sure, so some outside perspectives would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Lookup please - Drucilla Grimshaw in 1851
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 17:38 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if someone could do me the favour of looking up Druscilla Grimshaw in the 1851 census. Her maiden name is Nichols, and her husband is called John Grimshaw. I think they may have been living at Scarborough at the time.

I am trying to find where Drucilla was born, the only likely parish record I have found so far is 1818 in Nafferton, which is a bit of a jump when just relying on parish records.

Thanks for any help.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Margaret Devaney - Can't find birth record.
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 00:51 BST (UK)  »
I am stuck finding a birth record for my ancestor Margaret Devaney.

On the 1911 census she is married to a Jonas Leach and is living in Hull. It says she was born in Hull in about 1867, but I can find no matching record.

The marriage for Jonas Leach and Margaret Devaney took place in Sculcoates in 1884.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Common Room / Amazing find - would love everybodies help and opinion.
« on: Monday 20 September 10 19:00 BST (UK)  »
I went to see my Great Uncle the other day. He lives quite far away so this is only the second visit since I started doing family history, though we do speak on the phone occasionally.

Anyway, last time I was there he told me he had a few old bits of paper in the loft that he'd get out for next time I came. I had a look through them and saw some great stuff, like the record of baptism for my Great Great Grandad who was born in India.

The thing that impressed me most was folded up at the bottom of the box. It had once been a really big piece of paper, but over the years it has been folded and unfolded so much that it has split into at least ten pieces.

I carefully got the bits out and put it back together. It turned out to be an original indenture dating from 1792. I photographed the bits thoroughly and merged them together to make this:

http://s385.photobucket.com/albums/oo292/Yashca/?action=view&current=IndentureFinal.jpg

Now, on my family tree, there is an Alice Wood, born circa 1803 in Birstall, Yorkshire, who married a George Nussey on the 14th August 1828. She is as far back as I have got with this line. But if you look on the indenture there are three 'Woods' mentioned. With this document do you think it would be possible to  trace back futher from Alice and find the people mentioned on this document?

I am so excited!

I also told my Great Uncle that he should probably take the Indenture to some archives or something and donate it, otherwise it will be completely ruined and wasted before too long. I hope he takes the idea up.

If anyone can help me locate the people on this record and tie them together with Alice I would be so pleased. I have been looking myself but have found nothing yet.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hawkhead = Hawkman?
« on: Sunday 19 September 10 18:17 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor on my tree called Sarah Evans, and her maiden name is Hawkhead.

I found her birth record on FamilySearch under Sarah Hawkehead, and it says ' 1st Jan 1815, Methley Yorkshire' daughter of William Hawkehead and Hannah Bitton.

The date and place match well, and I thought the mother was a Hannah from the census data I had found.

I've spent ages trying to find the marriage of Hannah Bitton and William Hawkhead or Hawkehead, but with no luck.

However I have recently found a marriage for Hannah BILTON and a William HAWKMAN on 3rd July 1797 also in Methley. Does this seem feasible?

If so, does anyone have any ideas for plausible birth records for either of them?

Oh, and another question, I should get copies of the original source material. How do I know where the registers are, or where microfilm versions of the registers are, or, failing that, where can I write to to get a copy of these records?

Thanks for reading, looking, and answering my probably obvious questions.
