Perthshire / Perthshire Place - Miffee
« on: Monday 10 December 12 07:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to identify a birth place for Daniel (Aka Donald) McDonald. on the 1851 census he lists his place of birth as Perthshire Miffee. At least that's what I think it is, and indexing on Find My Past and Ancestry agree.

Does anyone have any idea what town/village might sound like that?

Any help is much appreciated.

Kildare / Gavins in Ballymore Eustace
« on: Saturday 01 November 08 07:43 GMT (UK)  »
hi all

I'm wondering if anyone might know any history about a Gavin family who reportedly lived in Ballymore Eustace in the mid-19th century. My ancestor, Denis Gavin, came from there (via Dublin) and when he arrived in Australia in 1855 he said his parents were Denis and Mary Gavin: his father was already deceased but mother was living in Kildare. later information he gives on certificates states his place of origin as Ballymore, so presumably Ballymore Eustace.

When we visited Ireland we tried to find out more by visiting the church and churchyard and checking the National Library parish records to no avail.

I did find a Denis Gavin who died in 1852 but his estate says that he was a bachelor with only a surviving sister. I am assuming that this is the same chap who is on the griffith Valuations at Broadleas Common. There is no other Gavin showing in Ballymore so I am stumped as to further ideas.

Can anyone offer any further clues??

Thanks

Lanarkshire / Alexander McMaster & Margaret Blair
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 01:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking to make contact with any descendants of Alexander McMaster & Margaret Blair, both born Ireland. In particular I"m interested in children of their daughter Mary McMaster who married (1) John Campbell & (2) James Duncan

I have traced the various branches through Ancestry and obtained certs from Scotlandspeople so it is recent generations I'm most interested in at present, or the background in Ireland for Alexander & Margaret.

Names which occur in this family are Craig, Campbell, McGregor

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / St George Bloomsbury
« on: Friday 12 September 08 01:08 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

I wonder if anyone can provide a lookup for a marriage which is listed in the Pallot's marriage index.

It took place at St George Bloomsbury in 1829

The couple were John Partridge & Eliza Thompson.

This couple moved around the UK so this is my hope of finding any additional early information. Unfortunately these registers are not on microfilm so can't be accessed in Oz

Many thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Clifford Paton or Hugh Harold Paton
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

This is a "fishing" expedition.

I wonder if anyone has anything of a Clifford Paton, born in the Anderston district of Glasgow in 1924. He died in Dundee City in 2000.

Does anyone know of death indexes to newspapers for Dundee as I don't have the death certificate and can't get it online at Scotlandspeople.

I am also interested in his father, Hugh Harold Paton born at 126 Plantation Rd, Govan on 3 March 1898 to Robert Paton and Margaret McDavid

Anything about this family would be helpful -I have them in the 1901 census.

Thanks

Australia Lookups completed / Unassisted immigrants to NSW
« on: Tuesday 29 July 08 02:08 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

I wonder if anyone else who has been using the  "Unassisted Immigrants to NSW" can help me. This is proving to be a good resource but I have a stumbling block with it.

If I search for the name I then get listed options (so far so good)
If one name looks promising I can then get more details clicking on it. This gives me name, sometimes age and the ship's details.

What I want to know is whether anyone else can actually see the image for any particular ship's passenger list. I can find the ships and then when I click on the show image, it comes up with a faulty message and won't load the image.

No other images I try to load from there cause me problems. I have also tried on a different computer to no avail. Have also emailed but don't find the answer solves my dilemma.

Has anyone else managed to see the actual ship's passenger lists from this source?

Meanwhile I'll keep going back to the old way of searching the microfilms

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / cemetery guidance-COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 13:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My gt-grandfather Stephen Gillespie Melvin died in Regents Park London in November 1926 while on holiday from Australia.

I have his death cert from UK; his probate from Australia and his will but can only find one indirect reference that he might have been buried in East Ham. Although this seemed a little odd as he was non-conformist (usually!) I enquired whether he was buried in East Ham Jewish cemetery but unfortunately he is not in the records for that cemetery.

I have also emailed a number of other London cemeteries to no avail.

Is anyone able to give me some guidance on the likelier cemeteries for him to be buried in 1926 given he was residing in Regents Park. Are there other cemeteries in East Ham than the large mainly Jewish one? His brother's family was living in West Ham which to my mind might have meant he be buried there, but I'm at a loss.

Sorry to ask so many questions but I am very keen to try to find where he might be buried especially since there is tak that the headstones may be removed in the not-too-distant future.

Many many thanks for any help

« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 13:20 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate descendants of John & Jane Melvin who lived in West Ham from just before the 1901 census.

Their children were:
Lawrence Melvin; Isabella Read Melvin; Margaret Gillespie Melvin; Edward Melvin; John Melvin; Lily Melvin; Mary Jane Melvin and Robert George Melvin

I am descended from John Melvin's brother Stephen Gillespie Melvin who emigrated to Australia in the 1870s. They were both born in Leith in Scotland

Scotland / Divorce Paton-McDavid COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 13:03 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I need to find out the divorce date/year of Robert Paton and Margaret McDavid who married in Renfrewshire in 1895. Robert's second marriage in 1931 includes the notation that he was then divorced from Margaret.

However I don't know when the divorce occurred. I believe the records are indexed at NAS but no more than that & as I'm in Australia it will be some time before I have a chance to look at them

Is anyone able to provide me with info on this couple, finding divorces etc

Thanks

Pauleen
