London and Middlesex / Henry Plough died 1927 Staines Middlesex
« on: Sunday 05 April 20 15:31 BST (UK)  »

Hoping someone can help.

I’m trying to confirm that the Henry Plough who died Mar Quart 1927 in Staines was the husband of my Grandfathers cousin, Helen Bruce Plough nee Howie.
Henry was a Master Mariner born in Northumberland 1865/66, they married in Glasgow and both their sons were born there.  I think Helen may have travelled with Henry quite frequently and have the feeling that their base was in England. No sign of either in Scotland after birth second son, until Helen B appears on the Valuation Rolls 1930 for Glasgow as Proprietor, occupier. Helen died 1945 in Glasgow no death recorded in Scotland for Henry.
As I’m only a cousin 2x removed on the Howie side I have never gone beyond noting the 1927 death in Staines as most likely. Now I’m in contact with a Plough Relation and would like to verify this for them.
Thank you for reading this and in advance for any help you can offer

The Common Room / RAF Padgate 1941
« on: Thursday 18 April 19 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, thought I'd post this as it might be of interest to someone out there.

I have a photograph taken at RAF Padgate and dated February 1941. It does not appear to be an official photo and of most interest is that all the men have signed the back
I'm not able to post it as I use an iPad but if anyone thinks it could be of interest to them I will email them a copy.

PS I have 2 more taken in Torquay 1942 ( no names ) and a few odds and end taken in Swift Current 1942.

Australia / Alexander and Christina Hamilton in Tasmania
« on: Sunday 13 November 16 22:49 GMT (UK)  »

Hi, hoping someone can help. I'm looking for the death of a GGAunt Christian/Christina Hodge. She was the second wife of Alexander Hamilton who died in Longford Tasmania on 7th July 1884. I know for sure that this is her husband as his death ( correct date and location )is recorded on the grave stone of his first wife and several of his children in Stirling, Scotland. So far I have been unable to find her death in Scotland and wondered if she moved to Tasmania with Alexander.
The only other clue that I've found is that Alexander's son-in-law R Williamson registered his death.
Any ideas on where to look next will be gratefully received.

Australia / Short Family, Brisbane.
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 23:05 BST (UK)  »

Hi all, ages since I've been on this sight so hope I  get this correct!
A few years back I posted on this board looking for info on my aunt and managed to get some details,eg her arrival in Australia 1927 and her marriage to William Thomson 1932. I never got any further
I knew that in 1951 she was living with/married to a Perce Short and had a son  who I guessed to be about 20yrs at that time,( lived with them for a couple of years ).
Last week on another site someone kindly confirmed that there was a second marriage in 1937, they also sent me a link to Perce's 1942 enlistment records.

What I have now---   Margrette Louise Howie arrived Queensland 1927
Married William Thomson in Queensland 1932
Married Pervis(Perce) Short in Queensland 1937
From enlistment records-- Pervis' DOB  2-5-1910 Toowoomba
Margrette(Madge) a widow at time of their marriage.
Son DOB 25-1-1930 ( may still be alive so no name )
1942 Family lived at 42 Bell St, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane.
                                 Pervis  worked for Queensland Railway.
I am unable to find a death for William Thomson or a birth for their son under any of the above surnames.

Wondered if anyone could help or give me a clue where to look next.

Banffshire / THAIN/PIRIE
« on: Sunday 25 July 10 18:07 BST (UK)  »
Opinions welcomed.

HELEN THAIN and ALEXANDER FLETT(no marriage found)
had a daughter JANE/JEAN FLETT 24 Jun 1809 Rathven

JANE/JEAN FLETT =JAMES GOODBRAND 12 July 1827 Cullen

This couple had a daughter JANE/JEAN GOODBRAND ch 4 Apr 1841 Fordyce

1841 Census baby Jane/Jean is at home with her parents and siblings, also in the house is an ISA PIRIE 28.

1851 Census Jane/Jean(1841) is not with parents

BUT there is this which appears to fit as she is once again in a house with an Isa/Isobela Pirie

HELLEN PIRIE W 75
ISOBELA U 33 (should this read 38)
JEAN GOODBRAND Granddaughter 10

I've thought this was her and that Granddaughter was an error until couple of days ago when I  went back to this line.
Got a big surprise when I looked at Isobela Pirie's birth, parents George Pirie and Hellen Thain. George and Hellen also had Helen 1816, Ann 1819, George 1821 all born Cullen.

So far so good - JANE/JEAN Flett1809 was illegitimate daughter of Alexander Flett and Hellen Thain, Hellen went on to marry George Pirie.I can find no marriage for George Pirie and Hellen however there is an extracted entry IGI for a 1813 marriage for a Hellen Thain to a George Sclater in Rathven(this is where her daughter Jane Flett 1809 was born)  can see no children of this couple.

QUESTIONS- Did Helen Thain- Mother of Jane Flett die shortly  after Jane's birth as assumed by other researchers I've been in contact with or is that her in the 1851 Census?

Did the same Hellen Thain marry George Sclater and shortly after set up home with George Pirie.

Clackmannanshire / HODGE-help needed
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 21:30 GMT (UK)  »

Hi All, hoping some fresh eyes and lateral thinking can help me find my Gt/Grandfatherx5.

JOHN HODGE= MARGARET ALLAN 2 July 1774 LOGIE Perth. OPR states John as being in ALLOA.

Children - THOMAS ch Feb 1778
                 ALEXANDER 1780
                 CHRISTIAN 1781/2
                 JEAN 1782
                 JOHN 1787
All born Logie

From this period forward my line has adhered strongly to the Scottish Naming Pattern. I assumed that Thomas was their first living child so looked for a John c1740-60 with a father Thomas. NO LUCK.

JOHN HODGE 26 ch in all of Scotland 1740-60 (2 in Alloa). One of these 2 I find interesting.

JOHN HODGE ch 18 AUG 1745 Alloa, Father James, Mother Euphan Neish.
I can find no other children with these parents and no marriage for James and Euphan. BUT when I checked for a marriage of Euphan Neish 1730-1750
I found - Euphan Neish=Thomas Hodge 25 Nov 1737 Alloa. Three children to these parents, Mary 1739, Hellen 1749, Jean 1754 all ch Alloa.

Checked Euphan Neish christening, only 2 in the correct time period 1710 and 1715 to the same parents( John/Helen Stirline) in Alloa.

All comments welcome. Is JOHN 1745, I haven't seen the original OPR, really the son of Thomas.

Lanarkshire / Robert B Howie- Where did he go?
« on: Sunday 15 June 08 17:05 BST (UK)  »

Hi, I've mislaid a gggUncle. Can anyone help?

Robert Bruce Howie b 13th Feb 1863 Glasgow, I can find him  until his marriage to Margaret Baillie on 11th Jun 1886 in Glasgow. On the 1881 census he is listed as a watchmaker.

Margaret Howie nee Baillie is named in his brother Joseph's will dated 1917 with an address in Millport, her home town, she died 1939. I don't have her DC yet(next trip to Park Circus).

I'm sure that at one time I came across Bishopbriggs and Teacher of Music related to this couple, don't know where I saw or heard it but it keeps niggling at what brain I have left.

I'd love to know what happened to Robert Bruce he is the only one of 12 children that I can't account for.

Anyone come across him?     Val

Dunbartonshire / CUMBERNAULD MIs
« on: Saturday 31 May 08 21:25 BST (UK)  »

Hi, I'm looking for the burial place of my GGGrandfather JOHN HODGE. He died in Cumbernauld in 1891 aged 86yrs. Also his daughter CHRISTIAN GAFF died Cumbernauld 1897 aged 55yrs. The family came from St Ninians in Stirling and John's wife Margret Mitchell died there in 1877 but I think it unlikely that John would be taken back there for burial.

  Thanks     Val
