Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of a portrait?
« on: Sunday 14 August 22 07:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I want to confirm the possible date of this portrait. I believe the subject of this painting is the daughter of a baronet and date to the first decade of the 19th century. Is the dress and hairstyle consistent with this suggestion? Location … probably Dublin or nearby.
Thanks
Peter

Wicklow / Crosbie and Walsh, Wicklow and Dublin
« on: Friday 31 December 21 23:35 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings and happy New Year

I'm trying to find a link (if there is one) between my GGgrandfather, Charles Bingham Hill Walsh and the Crosbies of County Wicklow. Charles was born around 1817, the son of Henry Walsh and Cordelia Margaret Hill who were married 17 October 1815 in Dublin, St Paul (COI). I have not located his baptism record, but I did find records for his siblings: Henrietta Charlotte (1819), John William (1822), and William Henry (1825), Now, my thinking on a possible Crosbie connection is based on 2 lines of thought:
(1) the Crosbie name turns up in Charles's descendents -- he has a son, Charles Crosbie Walsh (b. 1849, Hampshire) and a grandaughter, Hester Dorothea Crosbie Ruddle (b. 1890, Wiltshire - my grandmother).
(2) there appear to be Crosbie--Walsh connections but I cannot definitely link this Henry Walsh to the Crosbie family. The name appears in records but I can't make the connection.
There is a Henry Walsh, son of Henrietta Daniel Crosbie (daughter of Sir Paul, 4th baronet) and John Walsh, who died, age 60, and was buried  Sept. 27, 1847 at Bray
There is a Hester Dorothea Crosbie, niece of Henrietta, only daughter of Sir Edward W.Crosbie (5th baronet) and Castiliana Westenra
There is a death record of  a different Henry Walsh who died (death registered 1865, Dublin South), aged 69
There is a death record of  a Cordelia Walsh who died (death registered 1876, Dublin South), aged 80
The last 2 are likely Charles's parents but this Henry cannot be the son of Henrietta

I've searched the likely records but cannot sort this out. Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Armed Forces / Boer War uniform?
« on: Monday 27 April 20 03:46 BST (UK)  »
An acquaintance asked about this uniform. Photo thought to date to c. 1900. Distinctive darker cuffs and collar markings but I couldn't match the uniform on the web.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / St Mary Magdalene Launceston -- John RUDDLE, Vicar
« on: Monday 03 January 11 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
There is a family legend that suggests my grandmother was a descendant of this John Ruddle. According to R.S. Hawker's "Footprints of Former Men of Far Cornwall" (edited by C.E. Byles, 1903), Ruddle became Vicar at St Mary Magdalene, Launceston, in 1663. He was apparently married to a Sarah who died in 1667. He then remarried a widow, Mary Bolitho, in 1671. The book records his burial on 22 January, 1698.

The online Cornish Parish records substantiates the marriage to Mary Bolithoe but I can't find reference to the burial of either Sarah or John. An appendix in the book quotes an earlier book on the church of St Mary Magdalene (by Pattison, 1852) that says there is a marble monument to Sarah in the churchyard.

Can these details be confirmed? I'm also interested in knowing whether there were any children from either of these marriages (no mention in the online records), as I suspect the family story to be fanciful and inspired by his fame in connection with the "Botathen Ghost".

Thanks

Midlothian / TRUBSHAW in Edinburgh? -- COMPLETED
« on: Friday 12 February 10 13:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have just today come across a distant relative who married a Thomas Harry Trubshaw in Sydney, Australia, in 1930. The marriage notice in the local newspaper says the groom was the "only son of the late Thomas Trubshaw, of Edinburgh". I don't know where the groom was born, or where the father died (except that neither event occurred in New South Wales), but preliminary internet searching suggests that Trubshaw is more an English than Scottish family name. So, I'm wondering if Trubshaw Sr was born in England and moved to Scotland later. I don't want to start using credits on Scotlandspeople or elsewhere without some leads. Any ideas where I might start looking to find a firm lead?

Thanks

Armed Forces / COMPLETED -- 92nd Regiment of Foot (maybe)
« on: Sunday 10 August 08 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm clutching at straws here. My GG grandfather, John Gordon, was reputedly a sergeant-major in the "Highlanders" (he died when my G grandfather was very young so the story may not be reliable). If he was, I'm supposing it would have been the 92nd Regiment of Foot.

He was married in September 1836 in Edinburgh and then disappears until his remarriage in Australia in 1860. The rest of his family are in the 1841 Scottish census but there is no sign of him. His death certificate indicates that he had two children by the first wife.

Now, my question is: If he joined the "Highlanders" around the time of his marriage, where might he have been when the 1841 census was taken? My second cousin and I are looking for a firm lead on the children and the fate of his wife.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Completed Census Requests / Universities and the 1901 Census -- COMPLETE
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 04:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a question about the 1901 census.

My GG uncle, Godfrey Harold Alfred Wilson, was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, from 1897 till 1929 but his name doesn't come up on any searches in that census. I am not certain he actually lived there but he probably wouldn't have lived very far from the university. I suppose he may have been out of the country at the time but is there another explanation?

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / my GG aunt Florence
« on: Monday 24 March 08 06:05 GMT (UK)  »
This photo of my GG aunt Florence was somewhat water-damaged before I acquired it, can it be cleaned up at all? The photo has "Joseph Wake, Photographer and Miniature Painter, No. 2a St Ann's Square, Manchester" printed on the back. The photo was taken between January 1863 and February 1872 when she was between the ages of 6 and 14, presumably towards the latter age. Can anyone pin the date down more precisely than my guess of c. 1870?

Thanks
Peter

Scotland / Gordon Highlanders c. 1830-1860
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 06:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I have run into a block while tracking the movements of my 2G Grandfather, John Gordon. He was christened (according to IGI) 29 AUG 1812 in St Cuthbert Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian. Parents William Gordon & Mary Robertson. This is where I lose track of him until his [second] marriage in Sydney, Australia, in 1860. I know that his name does not appear with the rest of his family in Edinburgh in the Scotland 1841 Census.

The clues I have that should have left a trace are: he is in the Australian registers as a widower with 2 sons living (but no names or ages). He died when my G grandfather was very young, so stories about him within the family may be unreliable. There is a belief within the Australian family that he was a sergeant-major in the Gordon Highlanders, was discharged in Scotland and traveled to Australia as a ship's engineer.
