Norfolk / Any suggestions on this name?
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone have any suggestions on this name from All Saints, King's Lynn.

It looks a bit like YAUNOR.

I have been various possibilities but can't find on the CWGC or elsewhere.  Sure it will be something obvious but I need a second pair of eyes to look at it.

I wondered if anyone might recognise it as a "Norfolk" name?

World War Two / BBC: Search for family of executed WW2 Highland soldier
« on: Wednesday 12 May 21 16:57 BST (UK)  »
I saw this on the BBC News pages so had a look here, thinking it might have been discussed but I cannot see anything.

Someone might want to try out their searching skills and see if they can find anything about him.

Briscoe - Framlingham
A friend told me that he saw a pair of end of pew plates in St Michaels Church, Framlingham with the names

Paul Briscoe, born 1930, died 2010
and Monica Briscoe, also born 1930, died 2010

I have searched various sources and can't find any references to them anywhere. Does anyone in Framlingham recognise the names or anyone have access to any local reference sources?

Martin Briscoe

(Very unlikely to be related to me, just curious)

Inverness / Edward MacDonald died 9 October 1897 Plockton Age 19
« on: Friday 18 January 19 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have been going through reports of railway accidents on the British Newspaper Archive, looking for accidents during the construction of the West Highland Line though picking up some on other Highland lines.

I came across the FAI on the death of  Edward MacDonald who was killed 9 October 1897 at Plockton Age 19.  He is described as being having "belonged to Harris".

I have the report if anyone has any interest in him.

One Name Studies: T to Z / VARLEY - Skipton, Pendle, Burnley, Liverpool, Bolton
« on: Thursday 27 December 18 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
Many years ago when I first started on the family tree, I was given copies of some old letters.  They date back to the early part of the 19th Century mainly.  There are various names - Varley, Maxfield, Heartley, Shutt.  Some are to a couple in my home town of Bolton, they seem to be related to these other families.  I spent some time studying them but there was only the IGI and 1881 Census available online or CD then!

I have put them online on my website.  They are easier to see on FLICKR, there is a link on the website and also a link to some notes I have made about them.

Thought I would post here in case anyone recognises any names.  There is one letter about a Richard Varley of Gisburn who had died in the USA and an executor was trying to find heirs.

Moray (Elginshire) / Keam Public Schoolhouse
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 22:50 BST (UK)  »
I was updating the Duffus War Memorial on the IWM WMR earlier.  I came across a news item about the unveiling of a War Memorial tablet on Keam Public School in 1920.

It seems to be a private house now.

I have been trying to find an EMail address of someone in the a rea so I could ask but the only place I have found is Lossiemouth Museum.

I don't suppose anyone here knows if the memorial is still there and if not, where it is.  Otherwise anyone know someone in the area who I can ask?

Australia / Allan MacLean transported 1828
« on: Friday 14 September 18 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I have never looked at transportation records even though I have nine very distant relatives were transported (from the Lewises, the dodgy part of the family!).

I came across a story in the newspaper archive anout a postman on Mull who got his son (about 16) to deliver some mail in 1828.  His son stole £50 from one letter and ripped up the letter.

He was sent to Inveraray for trial and amazingly was not hung, he was given transportation for life.

I passed this on to a friend who is interested in that area.  So had a look on Ancestry to see if I could identify the person.  There is a Allan Maclean tried on 1st December 1828 and sent out on the JOHN on 22 May 1829 which is probably him.

There is a tree on Ancestry that could have him but not sure about its accuracy.

I wonder if someone more familiar with transportation records can point me to more on him so I can pass on to my friend.

Lancashire / POUNDER in Burnley.
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 17:04 BST (UK)  »
My family came from Bolton and my Grandmother was a POUNDER, they originally came from North Yorkshire.

Over the years when I did more family history work, I used to see Pounders in Burnley.

There are no longer any of my family with the Pounder name around Bolton but when I was recently looking at the Locate My Name website. I noticed that there is a still a high number of Pounders in Burnley.  I have never found a link but wonder if anyone has researched the name in that area?

Antrim / Anyone got access to Lisburn Advertiser archive for WWII?
« on: Monday 02 April 18 17:14 BST (UK)  »
There was a query elsewhere about Thomas MacMann from Lisburn.  Born there about 1918 and KIA on Malta in 1941 whilst serving in the RAF.

He was awarded the military OBE earlier in 1941.

What is puzzling is that the CWGC record and his headstone show him only having the BEM.  I was hoping to check on the British Newspaper Archive but they have limited coverage of that newspaper.

I have found a tree on Ancestry that has him but no reply yet from them.

Wondering if anyone has access to anything in the area.
