My Dad's Uncle Sam, left behind two little boys who were brought up by their Grandmother. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland. No known grave, but mentioned on a panel in Pozieres memorial in France, and in the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.

My cousin once removed. My Grandfather (his Uncle) served with him, and promised his sister that he would look after her oldest son. Grandfather was wounded and whilst in hospital, his nephew was killed at the Somme. He blamed himself until the day he died aged 69 in 1954.

The Lighter Side / Genealogists Nightmare!
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 10:19 GMT (UK)  »
 :o
I came across this poem in my late parents papers.

Many, many years ago, when I was twenty three
I got married to a widow, who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a daughter, who had hair of red
My Father fell in love with her, and soon the two were wed.
This made my Dad my Son in Law, and changed my very life,
My daughter was my step mother for she was my Fathers wife!
To complicate the matters worse, although it gave me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became, a Brother in Law to Dad,
And so became my Uncle, though it made me very sad.
For if he was my Uncle, then that also made him Brother,
To the widows grown up daughter-who of course was my StepMother!
Fathers wife then had a son- who kept them on the run,
And he became my Grandson, for he was my Daughters son!
My wife is now my Mothers mother, and it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife -she is my Grandmother too!
If my Wife is my Grandmother, and I am her Grandchild
Every time I think of it it simply drives me wild!
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw-
As the Husband of my Grandmother- Ive become my own Grandpa!!

I understand it.. I think!! lol

World War One / William James McGregor
« on: Sunday 27 October 13 14:02 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies if this is in the wrong place, or, indeed if it has already been talked about .
In todays Sunday Post there is a very interesting article, about the above named man, who was killed on the Somme on 28/2/ 1917. A distant relative in Australia is trying to find a closer relative to this man, so that they can give the soldiers Bible to them. The Bible was in the soldiers left breast pocket when he was shot through the heart, and the bullet went straight through the Bible. He was in the 2nd Battalion 4th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and his parents names were Alexander McGregor and Mary nee Thompson. They believe he had a sister Patricia and three other brothers who were also lost in the war.If anyone can help they should call 0141 567 2722. A mystery for Rootschatters to get their teeth into! :)

Hi. I'd be grateful if anyone could find my Great Grandmothers date of death for me. Her Name was Isabella TOUGH nee McIntosh and on the 1911 census she is at her home in Milne's Court, Edinburgh.(one of the Closes off the Royal Mile) My Dad (born 1920) could remember visiting his Granny there as a child, but he didn't know when she died. Thankyou. Cav.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Trouble finding the correct parents
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.
I thought my Joseph Dalrymples father was David, but because there are a few Joseph Dalrymple's about I am not sure.
I have a death certificate for mine which states that he died on 16/02/1848 in Cowpen, Blyth at the age of 45 years, due to a wagon rolling over him. On the 1851 census his wife Mary (nee Dagg) is sure enough, a widow.
They were married at Hebron Church in 1829, making him about 26 when they wed. That's all correct, but I can't find out for certain who his father was. I'd thought it was David and Martha (Maxwell) but their son Joseph was baptized at Rennington in 1772, and I can't find any trace of another Joseph born to them later.
Just to confuse matters further there is a death in Longhoughton of a Joseph Dalrymple in 1848, but in the last 3 months of the year, so not my Joseph. Can some kind soul please try to find possible parents for my Joseph? (My Great Great Grandad). Thankyou  :)
