Carmarthenshire / The History of Llanelli by Ivor Griffiths
« on: Friday 15 March 24 08:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of this this? I believe originally written in Welsh then translated into English. On line resources state it contain information on William Rees of Cilfig Cottage, Llanelly an I am interested in what it might have to say. My own research shows William (1780-1861) was a Brick maker then Farmer of a small holding and contemporary records have him as the son of a Henry Rees who with a William Bowen set up the Calvanistic movement in Llanelly which led to the building of Capel Newydd in 1809.

Thank you

Galway / Ballinasloe birth/baptism records
« on: Sunday 15 October 23 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Where is the best place to make birth/baptism enquiries for a Joseph Devine born around 1881-1884 Ballinasloe, Gallway. Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about him, but would like to learn more.

He moves to Carmarthenshire and marries an Annie Mary Davies in 1919. His marriage record states he was 38 (therefore born around 1881) a general labourer whose father was also Joseph Devine (deceased) a Carpenter.

In 1921 she states he was 37 and 0 months (therefore born around June 1884), born Ballinasloe, Galway, again a general labourer “ex service out of work”

After 1921 his whereabouts are unknown, although his wife ends up (on her own) in Brighton!

Thank you

Carmarthenshire / Rosalie Bowen 1919 in 1939

Hello

Is anyone able to please supply her DOB for me. She was born 1919 Pontyberem, Llanelly R.D. and is showing up in FindMyPast searches (which I don’t have full access to) but I can’t find her in Ancestry, maybe she is mistranscribed there. She is probably with her mother Annie born around 1899. With full DOB I may be able to find her on Ancestry. Thank you.

On-line parish records, whether it be on Ancestry, FindMyPast or other sites, are a great boon to those of us researching our ancestors. However, I have noticed, in recent weeks, an issue on the Ancestry site, in that search results for Carmarthenshire marriage parish records no longer display the year or place of marriage, they used to. As a result any downloaded records don’t contain this information either. Search results only show day and month of marriage which is of very limited use.

I am trying to resolve this issue with Ancestry, however after a few correspondences they are not grasping that there is an issue and that it needs to be resolved. This is a major “corruption” of this database.

Can any other members that use Ancestry please check if they have same issue. If so, I would be grateful if you too could report this issue to Ancestry, as the more people that raise it the more likely it is to get resolved. At the moment I feel like I am hitting my head against a brick wall!

Thank you

Glamorganshire / Anyone prepared to hazard a guess?

Hello

Frustratingly, in the attached entry from the 1921 census the months entry for the head of the house J(ohn) T(homas) Jones is unclear it is 60 yrs and ? Months. Hoping we might be able to come to a concensus as to what it might be. I have an idea, but I don’t want to say yet in case it influences others’ thoughts. Thank you

Carmarthenshire / David Evans 1854-1916 death.

Hello

Hoping for help on this. Looking for earlier census entries for David and any more details on his death.

David confuses everyone, including himself on his date of birth. We know from details about him in the marriage certificate of his daughter Sarah Helena Evans (1897) that he died during the Great War after his ship was torpedoed. In Welsh Mariner’s index this corresponds to David Evans born 1854 in Llanelli certificate number 05335. From this I found his Mariner’s certificate on line which give his DOB as 17 Jul 1854. In later certificates he gives his DOB as 09 Jun 1854, Llanelli! He does not appear much in the census, presumably as he is at sea. In this marriage entry (1891) he says he was born 1857 and in the 1911 census in 1862!

His marriage entry states his father was also called David Evans and was also a Master Mariner. He should at least be in the 1861 census, but I can’t find him. He may be in the 1871 census but I know that they could start maritime training as early as age 12/13.

I attach an extract from Welsh Mariners list which gives a reference no. Regarding his death but I have been unable to find anything in relation to this.

His mariners records are here

Carmarthenshire / Tivr/Tiver? Llanarthney
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 23:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Wondering if anyone has come across this address (or similar) in Llanarthney. They relate to a David Lewis who witnessed the marriage of 2 different Mary Lewis in Llanarthney, one in 1830 and in 1834. Tivr/Tiver is entered after his name and such entries, in these marriage records, seem to relate to the address of that person, therefore I don’t think it is an occupation or title (but could be wrong!) These seem to be the only 2 marriages he witnessed.

Thanks

Carmarthenshire / Llangwelach?
« on: Monday 31 July 23 08:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone recognise the place of origin of the bride Hannah Walter in the attached. It looks like Llangwelach but it’s not a place I recognise. The marriage took place in St. Elli. The bride was not necessarily from Carmarthenshire

Thank you
