South Africa / Trying to find a death in Johannesberg
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
I need help to find the death of an Englishman who reputedly died in Johannesberg  in 1922.

John Edwin Speer emigrated to South Africa with his wife Mary Anne and their son aged 9 in 1919.
His wife and son returned to England in 1922 presumably after his death.

How can I obtain the date of John's death and his death certificate ?  The date of his birth was 1883 in Battersea London

Suffolk / Help with parents of Soldier killed in WW1
« on: Friday 26 April 13 15:00 BST (UK)  »
I want to find the parents of a soldier who died in WW1 to include them in a Memorial book.

Henry Finbow appears on the village War Memorial but I need proof of the names of his parents.

The only facts I can find are  Henry Finbow born Cotton Suffolk died 28/6/1915   Suffolk Reg. W.E.Theatre.

There are several Henry Finbows born in Cotton and adjoining villages of Bacton and Mendlesham
who would fit the bill but with no given birth date I am stumped.

I wondered if there are any other army records I could access.

The Common Room / Merchant Seaman ? died at sea
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am wanting to find the date and cause of death  of a Merchant Seaman whom I believe died at sea.

He is  Charles Bass  b1818 in Coddenham, Suffolk and died between 1854 (birth of youngest son) and 1861 Census when wife is shown as Widow.

I have a record from Find My Past that  mentions Series : BT116 and date range  1853-1857. I also have an original index of seamen with Charles Bass listed as being on the  FORTITUDE.

I wondered if anyone can help with anymore information.

The Census 1881  shows Harry  aged 23 on board  H.M.S.  Lord Warden  as an  Able Seaman  from then on I can find no sign of him.

Did he die on board or jump ship on his travels ?

I would be very grateful for any help.

Canada / Missing Schroeder!!
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 20:59 BST (UK)  »
On behalf of a friend I am trying to find  what happened to an ancestor of his.

Vincent Conrad Huys Schroeder was born in 1910 in Islington,  London, England.  He emigrated when he was 15 on his own. I have him on a passenger list then and on two further  lists at the ages of 19 and 23 probably visiting home.
The last voyage his destination was Halifax.

I have been unable to find any trace of him subsequently.

Does anyone have him in their tree ? I would love to know if he married and had a family.
