The Common Room / 1921 Scottish Census - numbers in the Marriage-Orphanhood column
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 08:58 BST (UK)  »
Can any kind soul please tell me what the numbers in the Marriage-Orphanhood column in the 1921 Scottish Census might mean?
They appear to have been added later in violet ink.
Thank you.

Could some kind soul please do a look-up for the baptism of an Ellen (possibly "Helen") RIVERS sometime between 1833 and 1840?
The 1861 and 1871 censuses show her as Ellen and Helen RIVERS, born Newport, Isle of Wight.
In the 1881 and 1891 censuses, under her married name of FORD, she stated that she was born in Newport, Isle of Wight.
Thank you.
Regards,
John

Cheshire / BEDDOW and DUTTON, interchangeable family names in Churton
« on: Friday 29 October 21 10:23 BST (UK)  »
Can any kind soul provide any background to why some BEDDOW and DUTTON family names in Churton seem to be interchangeable.

On 31 August 1875, "John BEDDOW, also DUTTON, labourer of Churton, drunk and riotous at Churton on the 4th August, was fined 20s and 8s and 6d costs" at Broxton Petty Sessions.
[Northwich Guardian 04 September 1875, page 2]

In the 1881 census, James BEDDOW (age 31) was living in Edgesley Lane, Churton by Aldford, with wife Elizabeth (nee ROWLAND) with daughters Kessiah BEDDOW (aged 9, born Kezia ROWLAND, baptised 7 Apr 1872 in Coddington as the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth ROWLAND of Clutton), Jane BEDDOW (3) and Charlotte BEDDOW (1).

By the 1891 census, James and Elizabeth had changed their names to DUTTON, but still living in Churton-by-Aldford, with daughter Charlotte (11), plus new children Harry (aged 8 yrs), Elizabeth (6), John (2) and baby William DUTTON (6 months).

When a James DUTTON and Elizabeth ROWLAND married on 28 Dec 1876 at St John's, Churton, James reported that his father was John DUTTON, a labourer, which would fit with the intoxicated John BEDDOW/DUTTON mentioned above (but I have no proof).

In 1901 and 1911, the DUTTON family were living at 37 Cross Street, Hoole.

I know this is the same family as the mothers' maiden names fit, plus various DUTTON obituaries/funeral reports posted in the Chester newspapers show relations that I know were part of the BEDDOW family. Also, various members of the family started adopting the middle name of "Beddow", occassionally "Beddoe".

James and Elizabeth's son JOHN DUTTON was buried on Chester's Overleigh Old Cemetery in 1916 as "John Beddoe DUTTON". His brother Harry was buried in Blacon Cemetery, Chester, in 1957 as "Harry Beddow DUTTON".

Was the change of name caused by illegitimacy, or were the family trying to evade creditors, or was it for some other reason?

I would be very grateful for any information, evidence or clues.

Thank you.

John

PS: I don't know if Churton-by-Aldford and Churton-by-Farndon are close, connected or the same place, but the family(ies) came from that area.

Durham / CIA representative?
« on: Wednesday 21 July 21 08:33 BST (UK)  »
Could some kind soul please explain what a "CIA representative" meant on a Durham (West Hartlepool) baptism from 1939.

It's written after the father's name.

I don't believe it's espionage related.  😉

Thanks,

John

One Name Studies: H to M / METCALFE, Alice Maud
« on: Wednesday 19 February 20 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm looking for more details of an Alice Maud METCALFE, born about 1897, who married a Samuel Raven GALE in Glasgow in 1917.
She was a 20 year-old professional dancer; he was a 47 year-old "horse breaker", and a musical hall variety artiste.
Her parents were recorded on the marriage certificate as George METCALFE and Mary LAZENBY.
I don't know whether Alice Maud METCALF was Scottish or not. Samuel GALE was from Bradford and toured music halls all over the UK.
I haven't been able to find any other trace of her, or her parents.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Montgomeryshire / A parish called "Pantygamell"?
« on: Sunday 22 December 19 09:05 GMT (UK)  »
Can any kind soul please help me find a parish called "Pantygamell" (or something that looks like that)?

It appears in a Non-Conformist Births And Baptisms listing (attached) of the 1817 and 1814 baptisms of Sion & Ann JONES, the children of Evan and Jane JONES [Calvinistic Methodist Bethel Chapel in Llanidloes].

The father's parish is listed as Trefeglwys, the "Parent's parish" (I assume this was the mother's parish) looks like "Pantygamell".

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm trying to find the burial information for Catherine McELROY who was buried in Redhills Roman Catholic Cemetery in 1913. She had been living at No. 1 New Street in Durham and died on 20 Mar 1913, and buried on 24 Mar 1913

Her father, Owen McELROY is also buried in the same cemetery. He died on 9 Sep 1923 (buried 12 Sep 1923). Any information on his grave would also be appreciated. Thank.

If I can get the grave(s) reference and/or location, I can try and get a photo of the headstone (if there is one).

Thanks,

John
