Stirlingshire / Need help to follow Mary McEwen
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Mary McEwan, She was the daughter of John McEwen and Henrietta McNicol McEwan, born Jan 22 1845 in Fintry, Stirlingshire.. Trying to find out who she married and when, as my family records show she had a daughter Jessie 1866, a son John 1868 and a son James 1870 but no last name for them.. The story my mother told was Mary was a nurse and was one of the first lady's into Ladysmith after the relief of the Boer War  she was nursing a Boer prisoner and another one thought she was poisoning him and kicked her and took a chunk out of leg it turned gangrene and she died. The write up was in the Daily Express at the time. But unless I can find out who she married, and was she living in South Africa at the time of the war since she would have been around 55 by then. I cannot go much further with the story without her last name.  Any help on where to look would be appreciated, I have tried Scotland People but there were so many Mary McEwan could not narrow it down.

Thanks.

Lanarkshire / Find Out More About Coal Merchant Walter Bruce Gray Govanhill
« on: Saturday 28 September 13 01:39 BST (UK)  »
I would like to find out  more about my grt grandfather and grandfather who were coal merchants. In the 1901 census shows Walter age 45 coal merchant, Walter age 16 son, coal merchant labourer. Then on walter the son's marriage certificate in1914 still shows him as a coal merchant. I am trying to find out if they actually owned a business or just worked for someone. In 1926 when Walter Gray the son died,  his headstone reads, A token of respect and esteem memory of Walter Gray from the coalmen of Govanhill. I just figured that to erect a headstone in his honour that he might of owned the business, but maybe not just well liked. Anything I can find out would really help. Thanks

I'm trying to find out information about a straight razor I found in my fathers belongings. It is a straight razor and on the blade says The Hamburg Ring TRYME, and in the shaft of the blade says, T. McMenemy, 141 Graham St., Airdrie. Does this mean anything to anyone. Picture attached, sorry picture too large don't know how to mimimize it. Thanks

Stirlingshire / Where do I search for demolition information on house in Fintry
« on: Tuesday 16 October 12 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I have had a search done by the Land Registry on 40 Main St Netherton Cottage Fintry.  I have the information from 1884 to 1964, then there is a gap from 1964 to 1984.  My grandfather bought this property in 1936 and sold it in 1964, some time after 1964 the original building was demolished and later a new house built back further on the property.  Does anyone know how I would find out when the house was demolished and why?  If it was unsafe or was it just demolished to build the new building?   The Land Registry does not keep this information.  I am also trying to find out how properties like 40 Main St get the names they do like Netherton Cottage.  As I was there last year and it is still called Netherton Cottage.  Thanks for any help you can give me.
