The Lighter Side / Historical: Outback Australian life - cruel mid 20th century
« on: Tuesday 20 March 12 05:11 GMT (UK)  »
Well worth the read!
For those who may be interested in the rigours of cruel mid-20th century country living in Queensland

"From Stock Camp to City Hall".

In 1937, a six-year-old boy was dumped like an unwanted pup, by an uncaring father, and unbeknown to his mother. This little boy found himself imprisoned in a cruel environment of a church-run boys' home. His ordeal lasted almost ten years when he was then banished to the remoteness of a harsh existence on large cattle stations in the far Western Queensland Channel Country. His resume, after seven years stockman, horse breaker, drover, jockey, shearers cook. ................................
Now in his 82nd year, follow this true story of his journey from orphanage to Stock Camp to City Hall. In this story, you may be shocked at the brutal child abuse suffered by children, unfortunate enough to have found themselves in this institution. Follow his footsteps along the western stock routes of the Georgina, Diamantina, and Coopers Creek. A story about cattle stampeding in the darkness of night to becoming Town Clerk of Hervey Bay City.

Suffolk / EDMONDS
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
G'day RootsChatters

I am researching the Surname EDMONDS and have surfed across  George Gilbert EDMONDS who lived in Ipswich around 1895.
This came from his being the next of kin, father,of George William EDMONDS b c 1895, who was KIA in 1917 at Ypres while serving with the Australian Army.

I assume that George Gilbert EDMONDS was born around 1870 and married Emily Pearce .....? before 1895 in Ipswich.

Of particular importance is to discover the parents of George Gilbert EDMONDS.

Can any RootsChatter please assist?

With sincere thanks

Australia / HMS Juno

Hello RootsChatters

The HMS JUNO arrived in Sydney mid-1850s under Captn. FREMANTLE after fulfilling activities in the Indian Ocean.

The HMS JUNO became the official headquarters of the British Government in Australia.

My Great Grandfather, George Gilbert EDMONDS came to Australia on the HMS JUNO [abt 1855!] possibly as a ship's carpenter.  He married in Sydney in May 1857.

BUT, I have not been able to find a link to his travel, nor customs record of his arrival.

I have much of the EDMONDS family records and also some information of his Brisbane years.  He was buried in South Brisbane Cemetery in 1906 and has a substantial monument.

Is there any record that may confirm his arrival?
