World War One / Er Lee Royal Field Artillery "X" 31st Trench Mortar Bty
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
My husbands Great Uncle Er Lee from Ashton Under Lyne , Lancshire was killed on 31st October 1918. His mother received the telegram on Armistice day .  As by that time she was widowed, had lost a son as a young child and just had one older married son, she was alone.

We have found he is buried in Vichte Cemetery, Belgium (CWG records) . We are planning to visit the grave.

Where can we find out more about what happenend to him?. The records say he was in  Royal Field Artillery    "X" 31st Trench Mortar Bty and was a Gunner.

Thank you

Census and Resource Discussion / Publishing 1911 census pages in local history book?
« on: Friday 07 November 14 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching the people who lived in my street in 1911 , where they came from and what happened to them. I would like to pull the information together into a local history book. It would clearly be good if I could include a copy of the census pages for each family as a starting point. What is the restrictions on this? Is it possible? I am unclear from the regulations. Has anyone done this ?

Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / Using census in community local history book
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 22:01 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching the people living in our street in 1911 and where they came from and where possible what happened to them I realise there must be copyright issues on including a copy of the actual 1911 Census pages. Is it possible to get permission to print the pages to include in the local history book? It would be self published for the community. Anyone know the regulations or where I could find out?

Thanks

I have an interesting  1913 post card showing pupils (boys) and teachers at 'Eltham House School , Mottingham' .  I live locally in Eltham but do not know where this school was . Any ideas? The post card has been sent from from someone at the school (Teacher/Headteacher?) to T K Batterbury, Burnaby House , Bedford

I am looking for a family called FREEDMAN who came from Kalwaria Poland to Merthyr Tydfil, Wales . In 1851 Solomon and Sarah Freedman are in Merthyr with their children. The first two were born in Poland,  Ann b 1836 and Mary Ann B 1841. The next child Adelaide was born in 1846 in Merthyr so the family must have come to Wales between 1841 and 1846 . Solomon Freedman was a Pawnbroker. Does anyone know of Polish Jewish  records which show Solomon and Sarah's marriage  or the baptisms?  Solomon's father Sampson Freedman b 1795 is also shown as coming from Poland . He also shows in the UK records.

Does anyone know why would the family have travelled from Poland to Wales at that time?

Thank you

London and Middlesex / Who was the Mayor of Woolwich in 1916?
« on: Friday 12 July 13 15:59 BST (UK)  »
My Great Aunt who went to work in the Woolwich Arsenal said that she had been working for the Mayor of Woolwich who lived in Wrottesley Road in Plumstead, south east London in 1916. She (and the Mayor's cook!) were lured away from a life in service by the 30 shillings a week wage in the munitions factory. The Mayor was not amused!

Does anyone know who the Mayor of Woolwich was in 1916?

Many thanks !

My great aunt worked in the munitions factory  in the Woolwich Arsenal in World War One. I have records from her that says she remembers the Prince of Wales (later Edward V111) visited them. I have some recollection of a photo of a Royal visit , but that may be in George V1 in WW2.

Does anyone know of any record of this ?

Thanks
