Tipperary / Ryan family
« on: Thursday 12 October 23 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I recently found entries in the "New Inn & Knockgraffon" parish register listing William Ryan (gtgt-grandfather) marriage to Margaret Murphy on 22/1/1832 and Patrick Ryan gt-grandfather bapt.5/8/1835. Finding it impossible to trace family further back or forward up to 1857 when Patrick  married Ann Rossiter in Manchester, England. Any help would be appreciated. Alan Ryan

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Adoption of William Ryan (b.1893 Bradford, England)
« on: Friday 30 April 21 16:52 BST (UK)  »
William Ryan was my granddad who appears in the 1901 census, adopted by Charles Gummerson in Hemsworth. He was originally adopted by a Manship family who I believe could have been William (c.1854-1900) and Annis (ne Askham) Manship who lived in the same area. I'm told that adoptions were not officially recorded but wondered if there was any way I could find out any details of it ?

Tipperary / The missing link
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
I recently discovered through DNA that I have cousins in NY, USA. The 2 cousins I contacted were 1st cousins to each other but they weren't much help. I traced their family up to their gt-gt-grand parents Patrick and Mary Ryan but then no further. Their granddad was Walter Francis Ryan 1895-1950 married to Edith Henrietta Paris. Their gt- granddad was James W Ryan 1871-1899 married to Catherine Kelley. Patrick was a farmer from Ireland born c.1841 and Mary c.1842........... My own gt-grandfather was also called Patrick Ryan (Tailor) b.1847 in the Tipperary area (possibly Borrisoleigh) and his father was called William Ryan (Tailor) and possibly married to Bridget Ready in 1841. I'm guessing that the grandfather of both my Patrick and the NY Patrick is the same person. Could anyone please find my missing relatives and prove the common link. Thanks, Alan Ryan

England / Ryan family tree
« on: Saturday 31 October 20 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
I recently got a lead from my DNA map that I have family origins in Tipperary. Having searched every available parish register in the area, I found only one match; Patrick Ryan (gt-grandfather ?) bapt.1/3/1847 in Borrisoleigh, parents; William Ryan and Bridget Ready. From that I found William and Bridget's marriage; 4/11/1841 and siblings; Mary bapt.11/11/1842, James bapt.5/12/1844, William bapt.11/3/1849, Michael bapt,28/5/1850 and Ellen bapt,6/3/1854. Continued searching till 1860 but no more entries. At some point Patrick ended up in England, I suspect 1854 or just after and maybe appears in the 1861 census or later. I no longer have a subscription, could anyone find them please ?

Cumberland / Gt grandfather in Kendal ???
« on: Monday 08 June 20 20:59 BST (UK)  »
My gt-graddad Patrick Ryan b.1847 (a tailor) married Mary Davis b.1869 (her father John was also a tailor) in Bradford in W.Yorkshire 26/12/1891. I have never been able to trace him before or after the wedding certificate but Mary is well documented as being born and living in Kendal up to the marriage. My granddad William was born 1/4/1893 in Bradford and abandoned not long after and Mary looked like she went back to Kendal (as a "spinster"). I suspect maybe Patrick and John Davis knew each other and Patrick and Mary eloped. In which case was Patrick living in Kendal prior to his marriage ? and also I have recently discovered I have a DNA match in America, did Patrick emigrate 1893-1895 ?

Australia / Butterfield
« on: Wednesday 21 September 16 15:58 BST (UK)  »
I was just doing a little bit on my partners maternal branch, her mother being born C J Butterfield in Mittagong NSW on 30/7/1929, parents Roy 1905-1995 & Viola (Moor)1909-2004. I'm presuming that Roy could be the son of George Butterfield & Ada Jane (Smith) who came from England after 1901. Could anyone access the Australian census's to confirm  if George and Ada were in Mittagong and had more children (inc Roy) please. Thanks a lot. ALAN

Armed Forces / Mess uniform
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I recently aquired an old British mess jacket but unfortunately all identification badges and buttons have been removed. Does anyone recognise what regiment it belongs to ? It's a pretty standard red with black (dark navy)collar and cuffs and the red epaulettes have gold braid on the edges and there are 2 button holes for a button chain. Thanks Alan
