Sussex Lookup Requests / National Burial Index ? (Cuckfield death)
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 22:52 BST (UK)  »
If its possible..  I dont know whether this might be recorded in the index (as I dont know how far back in time it started recording)...  but I wondered if there might be some information on a Mrs Frances Leppard who died in Cuckfield sometime between 1783 and 1789?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help,

Please could I ask for a look up for any information against both these names in the SMI for the marriage below :

groom's name: Edward Willett
bride's name: Jane Solomon
date: 27 May 1759
place: Buxted

I'm also wondering if the Jane might have been a widow before marriage.

Probate of the Will of this date of Frances Leppard, of Cuckfield, widow  SAS-WA/156  30 Jul 1783
Contents: Devise of freehold messuage or tenement in which testatrix was dwelling in Cuckfield, purchased of Richard Dungate and Thos. Huett Dungate and Mary his wife, to daughter Frances Leppard. To daughter Mary, wife of John Dancey of Cuckfield farmer, specific items of furniture, and to Jane, wife of Edward Willett of Ditchling, husbandman, and to daughter Frances all the residue of household goods. Executors: son-in-law John Dancey. Proved at Lewes, 2 Dec., 1789

I'm hoping someone might be able to help by looking in the SMI for any details at all of :
the marriage of John Dancey to Mary Leppard
the marriage of Jane Leppard to Edward Willett

If anyone can find the name of the widow Frances's husband that would be interesting too  :D

I dont hold much hope though of these marriages being found; I can find absolutely nothing on these marriages on the IGI.

In hope,

Sussex / Susan Anscomb of Cuckfield? dau of ?
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with any suggestions?  :D

I'm trying to establish whether the Susan Anscomb in the passenger list below, was the daughter of Allen Anscomb and Unknown, or William and Hannah Anscomb?

(Susan Anscomb was born in Cuckfield, according to a submitted record on the IGI, and in 1837 she married into a branch of the Dancy family who also emigrated from the same area to Pittsford, Monroe county, New York).  After marrying, her husband and her were found living next door to a William Anscomb.

Passenger list arriving in New York in 1827 travelling from England (Anscomb was misindexed as Auscomb):
Hannah Anscomb aged 46 F (Female) [born abt 1781]
William Anscomb aged 45 M (Male) [born abt 1782], Farmer. (His nearest matching baptism is in Wivelsfield, parents Allen and Elizabeth Anscomb - but baptism found only on Ancestry, not found on IGI)
Allen Anscomb aged 35 M (Male) [born abt 1792]
Allen Anscomb aged 18 M (Male) [born abt 1809] (occupation Mason on corresponding passnger record)
James Anscomb aged 16 M (Male) (occupation Farmer on corresponding passnger record) [poss baptism Brighton to Allen and a Sarah Anscomb in 1813]
Susan Auscomb aged 11 F (Female)
John Auscomb aged 8 M (Male)
Abraham Auscomb aged 6 M (Male) [born abt 1820, found with Hannah in 1850 in Pittsford]
Then there is another family, and then:
Allen Anscomb aged 65, Weaver, [born abt 1762]
Edward? Anscomb aged 19 Shoe Maker, (Male) [born abt 1808]

1850 United States Federal Census in Pittsford, Monroe, New York
Abram Anscom 30 born England, Labourer (Head of house presumably as listed first) [born abt 1820]
Catherine Anscom 25 born Scotland
Wm Anscom 6
Francis Anscom 4
Thomas Adamson 60, born Scotland, occ: Chandler [wife's father presumably as her maidenname was Adamson]
Hannah Anscom 69, born England abt 1781

What confuses matters though with this family, is that there seem to be baptism of a son Allen born to William and Hannah Anscomb in Wivelsfield in 1797, whereas the only marriage I can find of a William Anscomb to a Hannah does not take place until 1803, where Ardingly Parish Registers state "1803 Sep 28, William Anscomb of A. & Hannah Mason of Lindfield, at Lindfield" (see
http://www.archive.org/stream/parishregisterso00ardiuoft/parishregisterso00ardiuoft_djvu.txt )

Regarding the Allen Anscomb in the passenger list whose birth is approximately 1792 -
There is a baptism of an Allen Anscombe at Ardingly on 29 April 1787 to parents Allen and Elizabeth
but there is also a baptism of an Allen Anscombe in Wivelsfield on 19 March 1797 to parents William Anscomb and Hannah
If the Allen Anscomb travelling with them was not their son (then next probability is he was the brother of William), then what had happed to the Allen Anscomb, son of William and Hannah?

I'm wondering whether there were two couples called William and Hannah Anscomb about at the same time. Perhaps one at Lindfield or Cuckfield and the other at Wivelsfield.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Millbank baptisms - Help - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 10 January 11 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can any kind person point me in the right direction here... ?

I have full access to Ancestry website but I have spent the last two hours going round in circles.  I have two baptisms that I am looking for and that have so far proved elusive.

The place of birth for both of the the subjects is Millbank, Westminster, and their years of birth range from around 1810 to 1823.

I have checked Genuki and found this:
http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/WestminsterStJohn/index.html

But I can't find which place in Ancestry to look - when I look in the obvious places to look for parish records that are scanned in then I find no such place as Millbank in Westminster seems to exist, and I dont know whether I'm doing it wrong or whether the records just are not available?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Burial of a James Johnson in Brighton
« on: Friday 20 August 10 20:09 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for help to see if there are any burial records of a

James Johnson born abt 1785 in Bognor, (occupation Journeyman Carpenter)

who was found in Brighton up to and including 1861 but not after.

There are 2 death registrations of a James Johnson in Brighton which don't show ages on the index, one in 1862 and one in 1864.  (I have not bought death certificates, and don't intend to).

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Help with marriage please
« on: Saturday 26 June 10 23:55 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any help please with finding the marriage of the parents of two children, John (born abt 1803) and Catherine Crowter.

We know Catherine (born abt 1805) was baptised in Canterbury and that matches her place of birth in the 1851 census.  Her baptism showed her parents as John and Susannah Crowter.

Her mother Susannah, enumerated with her in 1851 as widowed, (and confusingly entered as Crowther) was born abt 1769 in Canterbury.  John had died before 1851.

Marriage registrations for John and Catherine and their children all showed Crowter as the name.

Have not been able to find any Crowter marriages in Kent for a John to a Susannah on the IGI (could only find Crowther's which was a more common name).

IGI Catherine Crowter
Christening:  07 OCT 1804   Canterbury, Kent, England
Parents:
  Father:  John Crowter
  Mother:  Susanna Crowter
Batch No I021993 (note there are only female baptisms in this batch)
