I have tried to find the death date and place of the above John Batten, born in London, Eng. Feb. 1828 He emigrated to Canada with wife Sarah and 2 chn in 1869, I have details of all of them except the death of John. He is mentioned in the Pittsburgh Daily Post on 21 Feb/ 1918, his 90th birthday, living with his daughter, Amy Pell but cannot locate his death after that.
Would love some help please to complete details of this large family of Battens, my main family line. I have tried on this site before a few years ago but am now hoping some other resources may have come to light.
Always hopeful!

New Zealand Completed Requests / Edward Green - Nelson
« on: Wednesday 13 May 20 03:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi All - Trying to contact a Marty Green, N.Z., who has contributed to the data of my Great Grandfather, Edward Green  (1818 - 1896) Nelson, N.Z., and so many of his descendants over recent times. It may be that some of my data may add to hers and new data she has that may assist me. Keeping my fingers crossed. Barrie Green, Palmerston North.

For several years I have dragged this problem out of my 'too hard bin' and got nowhere. Would really like to tidy up the details of this ancestor.

Briefly, John Batten (shoemaker) - son of Wm and Norah, b. 1828 All Hallows, London, m. 1856  Sarah Brewer Islington, son Wm John b. 1857 Aberdeen, dau. Amy C. b. 1865 Cheshire, all sailed on SS Prussian (occ. Mason - probably Masonic Lodge) arr. Quebec June 1869.
Have found him on 1871 C. Canada,  1900 C. & 1910 C. Allegheny Pitts. Wife Sarah d. 1903 bd. South Side Cem. Pittsb. (Large headstone etc.) John Batten m. Mary Smith Rate 21 Aug. 1914 PT. Huron, St. Clair Michigan, Divorced Nov. 19 1917 Port Huron, by wife - uncontested for desertion (ex remarries the same day!) so she wasn't a widow!
Have found several deaths of a John Batten but none of those have a clue that it was the above person.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please as at the time of his divorce he would have been about 90 yrs  of age with not many years left!
Grateful for any ideas.

Other Countries / JAMAICA, Kingston - 1841 - Death of Henry BATTEN
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 00:19 BST (UK)  »
Henry Batten is the last of my large  Batten family from Leadenhall Market, London left for me to finalise a few details.

Henry Batten was born 12 April 1824 London, bpt. 17 Nov. 1824, All Hallows, son of William Batten, Cheesemonger and Norah.

There is a record among London Church Records (can't remember exactly where now as it is some years since I located it) of his death on 3 July 1841 at Kingston, Jamaica and he is described as a Bachelor, and a Seaman in the Merchant Service.

I have searched (with no luck) Death Details for Kingston etc. as I would like to know the cause of death to enter into my records. Often on Rootschat, people have come up with sites I have not found which have had  the answers for my queries.

Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for Henry Batten's Death Entry?

Grateful for any suggestions.

London and Middlesex / 'William Watson' - Barque - Photo or Sketch please?
« on: Friday 30 June 17 00:42 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me locate a photo/sketch of the 480 ton Barque 'William Watson' please?

My  g.grandfather, Samuel Daly and his wife Charlotte arrived in Auckland, New Zealand aboard it, in August 1857 and I would like to add a photo of this ship to his Family History.

Google has some photos of other 'Watson' Barques but none is specifically 'William'.

Grateful for any suggestions. (I wasn't sure which Board to put this on but as it left from London I've put it here).

Ireland / Samuel Daly/Arthur Henry Daly
« on: Friday 26 May 17 08:59 BST (UK)  »
This problem has been in and out of my 'too hard basket' for 20 years! I'm hoping someone could help me please.

I would love to find some answers regarding my g.grandfather Samuel Daly who lists his father (in his marriage in Madras, India 31-12- 1853) as Arthur Henry Daly. We do not know who his mother was. Samuel Daly, possibly bp. 7 Feb 1825 at Ballinhassig, Cork, enlisted in the English Army in Cork on the 6-09-1844 and was later sent to India.

There he married in Bangalore, Charlotte Milton,( b. 1823 London) who was the Lady in Waiting to Lady Rawlinson. Their lives from then on - London then New Zealand, are fairly straight forward.

Their 3 children were - Arthur Henry Daly, b. Bangalore, 1856, Charlotte Esther Amelia Daly, b. 1859 N.Z. and Mary Ann de Burgh Daly, b. 1862 N.Z.

However, we do not know anything about Samuel Daly's lineage in Ireland, but the fact that his father's name was given to his son and the de Burgh name given to a daughter, appear in an Irish Family Tree on various sites which makes me curious if this his his family. But there is no indication of a 'Samuel' on this Tree.

His possible father, Arthur Henry Daly died in 1826 in Cork so Samuel would therefore have no recollection of him. I am loath to attach him to the Arthur Henry Daly/Johanna Gore Tree without proof.

I'll be grateful for any data that will sort this family of mine.

Thank you for taking time to consider this request and I look forward to suggestions when time permits.

Barrie.

Australia / Ordering a Death Certificate from South Australia
« on: Monday 08 May 17 00:47 BST (UK)  »
I am having trouble trying to follow the steps in ordering a Death Certificate for a death in South Australia. I am in N.Z. and wish to order one on line if possible.

117/35 John Brown Smith - Grey  - died Feb. 10 1882 Nr. Penola. Res. Charcote.

Very helpful researchers found this for me as family had thought he had died in England. He was my g.g.grand father and I would very much like to bring closure to this missing bit of data. (His middle name should be spelt 'Browne', a Devon family name).

Grateful for any assistance please.

Derbyshire / ? Death - John Browne Smith- ?Litchurch
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 05:32 BST (UK)  »
In the 1871 Census John Browne Smith (b. Dartmouth 1915) is in Litchurch, an attorney, with his wife Ann N. Smith b. London and ? daughter Amelia b. Coventry. Never heard of her - were they fostering her as they are not her parents on her Birth Certificate.

In the 1881 Census Ann Smith is at Margate, a widow with family members, the Childs , Battens etc. She later is a Matron at the Gentleman's Club in London.

I have never been able  to find John Browne Smith's Death and as he is my 2x gr,grandfather I am anxious to complete this part of my family history. I have been searching for years, putting aside and then starting again. Has anyone any suggestions please? Did he die in Derbyshire etc. or maybe moved somewhere else?

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Faith
