The Common Room / Illegitimate Roman Catholic Birth
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered that my Grandma (Roman Catholic) was born illegitimately.
There is no fathers name on her birth certificate.
I have her mother's and what I though was her father's marriage certificate date 26th December 1898.
She was born 4th June 1898 a good 6 month before her 'parents' marriage.
Evidence on census records show she also had a brother 3 years older than her.

My question is this. How would her mother have been treated being a Roman Catholic and an unmarried mother of 2 children.

Europe / German Ancestry
« on: Friday 02 July 10 18:43 BST (UK)  »
A friend of mine is wanting to trace her family tree but she is from German ancestry.

I wondered if some nice person on here could advise where she should start looking.

Family stories have brought to light that her Grandmother was the illegitimate daughter of Martin Bormann. Does anyone know where she might look to investigate this claim further?

Thank you

Suffolk / Gamekeepers Murder between 1871 and 1881
« on: Sunday 11 October 09 09:03 BST (UK)  »
A family story has just come to light regarding my 2x Gt. Grandfather. Originally from Mildenhall suffolk. It appears that sometime between 1871 and 1881 he had to move from Mildenhall to Leeds to excape capture for shooting a Gamekeeper dead whilst he was poaching.

I am trying to find any reference to this incident in the news papers of the time or anything online but without any success. Would appreciate some help please.

Regards
Pauline

I have just found out that my Gran was convicted and imprisoned for selling ration coupons after WWII.

I believe she was sent to Holloway prison.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find out more details of her conviction and sentence.

She lived in Wincester at the time

Yours hopefully.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Griggs family Leeds
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 18:17 BST (UK)  »
I have just viewed the 1911 census regarding my Griggs ancestors. To my amazement I found that my 2 x Great Grandparents Robert Griggs and Hannah Sayner had 11 children prior to the 1911 census. Only 4 of which were still living at the time of the census. I have looked on FreeBMD.org.uk and also on YorkshireBMD.org.uk but can't find traces of either the births or death of any of the deceased 7 Griggs children.

Robert Griggs and Hannah Sayner were married in Leeds in 1874
the living children were:
James (my Gt.Grandfather) b.1875
George Henry b.1877
Tom b.1879
Robert b.1881

Can anyone please offer any suggestions where I can look for them.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / St Peter's Church HUDDERSFIELD
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please tell me if the graveyard at St Peter's church in Huddersfield still exists. I have details of some of my ancestors being buried there but I don't live locally and don't want to waste a journey if it isn't there. The reason I ask is because I have seen a photo on the internet and it looks like there is a garden now where the graveyards used to be.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / The Colliers Arms Elland
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
PLEASE can anyone help/advise where to look.

I am trying to find out when The Colliers Arms in Elland was built.

It is a pub situated on the side of the Calder and Hebble canal.

I am guessing that it was built for the men carrying coal on their barges for the local mills. Hence the name.

I would also be interested in finding out who has been landlord there but don't know where to start looking.  I look forward to your replies

Regards
Polly

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Address look up PLEASE
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my Grandfather's part in WWI and believe I have found some details of his war record but need to check some address details. His name was:
Herbert Harrison-Jeffrey
the address given on the records on Ancestry is
102 Town Street
Horsforth
Leeds
West Yorkshire

Does anyone have the facility to look up who was living at this address in 1915. His wife was Elizabeth Hannah.
