England / Do lists of diseases/epidemics exist?
« on: Tuesday 05 July 22 07:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, as per title I'm just wondering if any resources exist that list epidemics of diseases that went around in particular years. I did a bit of a google and wasn't very successful.

I have found (not for the first time sadly) multiple (3) children in one of my family groups that died within a very short period; only 12 days to be more precise, the grief must have been unbearable  :( .

It clearly must have been a disease of some description, I'm thinking smallpox or typhoid maybe but I'm curious if there's a means of finding out what might have been the likely culprit?

The year was 1795 and it was in Uttoxeter Staffordshire, I was uncertain if this post was better for the Staffordshire forum + someone that might have local history knowledge of this kind of thing, or if it was a more general query for a bigger audience?

TIA,
Belinda.

I requested a copy of a childs entry into an orphanage to determine it it was my ancestors sibling, thereby confirming the correct death date/entry for their mother on New South Wales births deaths & marriages.

I recieved the document today and I think I have figured out what it says but just wanted to see what you guys think.

"Given to her brother in law Alex Clugston by the Governor ?? dated 14th June 1841 old book folio"

Does that seem about right?

Thanks,
B.

Cornwall / "Balcarris" - can't find this place on the map, not in Cornwall anyway
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

this little mystery concerns an ancestor of mine who immigrated to Australia in 1838. On the official record it looks like it says:

"native of Balcarris, near Foy, Cornwall"

but when I go onto google maps I can't find Foy (I suspect it may be Fowey?), and the closest thing to the name Balcarris is a Balcarres school in Gloucestershire!

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,
B.

Australia / NSW (?) Marriage and/or Death - Jane BAIN
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 03:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm seeking info on:

Jane Bain (nee McKay)
b abt. 1792 Montrose, Scotland
m: James Bain 1816
widowed between 1832-38
arrived NSW in 1838 on the 'Portland' (aged 46), with son James (17), and daughters Elizabeth (15) & Jane (6).

Older daughters Mary & Henrietta (with husband Alexander Clugston) had arrived the year before - also on the 'Portland'.

There are many descendants of this family so quite a lot of info is available:

- Henrietta & Alex settled in Victoria and had at least 7 kids
- Mary married Samuel Hadcroft, settled in the Milton area of NSW & had at least 9 kids
- James - ? ? ?
- Elizabeth (my 3x ggrandmother) married Thomas Appleby, they settled in the Bega/Bermagui area and had about 100 12 kids
- Jane jnr appears to have died in Sydney in 1888 (aged 57) having never married (reg under maiden name)

However, I've not been able to find any further trace of their mother Jane after her arrival in NSW, so some help with tracking down this elusive woman would be most appreciated!

thanks,
B.

Australia / I have a theory ....
« on: Thursday 05 February 15 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
So my current bug bear is my 3 x great grandfather Hermann Rischmuller, b. abt 1834 in Gottingen, Hannover, Germany, who apparently jumped ship (  ;)  ::) ) and arrived here some time prior to marrying Johanne(a) Hobel in Ballarat in 1855.

Recently I was re-examing the info available and had formed a fairly strong idea that a Charles Rischmuller (b. abt 1833 in Hannover, Germany) who also got married (to Emma Sweet in 1873), lived & died in Ballarat, was probably Hermanns brother, since with a name like that what was the likelyhood that they were unrelated?

Anyway, I finally coughed up to Vic Births Deaths and Marriages and got Charles' marriage certificate only to find that the parents names don't match ... or do they?

Mothers maiden name is very close isn't it? Just one letter difference, possibly easily explained as a transcription error?

My theory is that perhaps Charles' father died and one of his brothers has married Frederike? (not uncommon in those days). She's then had Hermann, so Charles and Hermann are half brothers.

But (there's always a but), their births are very close to be allowing for the death of a spouse, re-marriage and pregnancy, not entirely impossible, but close.

My other theory is that they actually have the same father and his name was George Christian or Christian George, since as you will notice, the occupation is the same for both.

What do you think?

Australia / Seeking information on WETTER, Andreas & Wilhelmine
« on: Sunday 25 January 15 01:24 GMT (UK)  »
For quite a few years now I've been trying to find an immigration record for my 3x great grandmother who came to Victoria some time before 1855.

She (Johanna Hobel) was born in Salzgitter, Germany & married Hermann Rischmuller in Ballarat in August 1855, aged 18 (??). Hermann died in 1865 and Johanna married Wilhelm Ebbe Theodore Moller in 1868.

I've found a record which potentially matches up but she is listed as Johanna Heber, which in itself is not a totally insurmountable obstacle, however she appears to be travelling with three other people (same birthplace) who's names I've not previously encountered.

Andreas Wetter b. abt 1824
Wilhelmine Wetter b. abt 1833
& a third person, also aged 14 whose name I can't make out

My gut feeling is that Wilhelmine might be Johannas sister and Andreas her brother in-law and that is how she ended up here in Australia, which incedentally is a question I'd always struggled with given the young age she was at the time.

So I'm seeking information that may potentially connect Andreas & Wilhelmine Wetter to Johanna Hobel/Rischmuller/Moller, even if they pop up on some other record that places them at a similar location/s to my Johanna, it lends weight to my theory that they are possibly related.

(ftr I've tried the IGI and can't locate a Wilhelmine Hobel that matches Johannas parents; Andreas & Johanne/a).

Thanks,
B.

For many years now I have been trying to find a record of my first ancestor (of one branch) immigrating to Australia.

He was from Germany and has an unusual name of which there are only two in the records; both women, so I have been examining alternatives hoping I might uncover a mis-translation/ mispell /transcription error. I think I may have found a likely candidate, the time of arrival matches, the age matches, but I'm stuggling with the handwriting/German names.

The passenger I'm looking at on this list is #69, Hermann ?.

I have googled the last name that this record is under and got no results so I think it might not be a 'proper' name, which puts me one step closer to it being the right record for me. However I can't make out the birthplace name, or the occupation which would most certainly either confirm or rule out that this is my man.

Should I hold off on telling you what they say the last name is and what I am looking for in order to get an unbiased opinion?  ;)

Anyway, help would be most appreciated!

Australia / Query about PROV immigrant index; specifically page #/family relationships
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

for a few years now the immigration status of this fellow has eluded me but I think I might just have him. His name is:

John Wood
b. abt. 1927; Aston, Warwickshire

m. Mary Anne Orenshaw in Melbourne in December 1853
So no wife on the journey here ( ... unless she died en route, there's yet another thought  ::) )

I have his immigration to Victoria pinned to about 1852/53 (based on death certificate & number of years in the colony of Victoria) but the exact date/ship was proving a hard nut to crack due to the sheer volume of men named John Wood who arrived here.

So in regards to this image below, related family members would be listed on the same page wouldn't they? So all the Woods on pg. 16 would be one family? The two girls on pg. 23 sisters perhaps? And the two young men on pg. 20 brothers or single men?

Would that be a fair conclusion?

Thanks,
Belinda.

Australia / Missing soldier mystery - SOLVED
« on: Friday 09 January 15 08:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

this post concerns the child of an ancestor of mine.

Alfred Rogers
b. 1904

near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The child himself is not my direct ancestor but his mother is and she's a very interesting case so I'm trying to find as much info connected to her as possible.

Mum was Ellen Rose (aka Helen, Nellie) Carter/Rischmuller/Richmuller/Richmiller/Gordon and the son I'm trying to track is Alfred Rogers/Rodgers. Born illegitimately to Jack Rogers in 1904, the last of their 4 children after Ellen Rose was divorced by my 2x great grandfather George Rischmuller in 1894 (for adultery ... they were separated for 10 months due to illness/unemployment and one day she wrote him a letter saying she'd had a baby and tried to say it was his!).

Anyway, back to Alfred, he was born in 1904 (not to be confused with older brother Alfred Frederick Rogers who was born and died in 1897), presumably in the vicinty of Melbourne although I'm not entirely sure. Alfred appears on Ellen Rose's death certificate so I knew he was still alive when she died in 1942 but other than that I know nothing about him, zip.

That was until a couple of days ago when I found a death notice for her on Trove and saw it had son Alfred as a member of the AIF. So I trot over to the NAA and search for Alfred under all the names I can think of; Alfred Rogers/Rodgers, Alfred Gordon (Ellen Rose re-married again in 1918 after Jack Rogers died), & Alfred William (from Ellen Rose's death cert) Rogers/Rodgers/Gordon.

Nothing.

There's a lot of close results and maybe I'm just missing him, but I'm wondering if this is just another example of this family stretching the truth, although there's nothing to be gained from lying in a death notice surely, not about this anyway?

Maybe his record isn't on there? I thought they all were?

Anyway I'm puzzled and was wondering if anyone else would like to take a look?

Thanks,
Belinda.
