Staffordshire / The Degg Teapot
« on: Thursday 12 May 22 05:04 BST (UK)  »
Funny title for me to ask for help on a ancestral website. Actually I'm trying to find a certain teapot which on it's base has "M. Degg Mar., 1762" and inside the lid it has "M.D. Uttoxeter". The teapot is impressed by it's maker TURNER who was producing at Lane End (Now Longton).
I am wanting to trace down the Degg family to see if it may still be in their possession.

So it was made in 1762 and last known of in 1901.
This teapot has a satirical design on it probably specially made for M.Degg whom I expect would have been from a well to do family possibly from Uttoxeter.

My search of museums have also failed to find it.

Staffordshire / Descendants of William Turner. Where are they?
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 04:01 BST (UK)  »
I am wishing to trace the decedents of William Turner (potter) of Longton 1762-1835. His father was the potter John Turner of Lane End whom I have good information on. It's been 16 years now and I have only managed to get forward a generation or so. I have never been able to trace what happened to the descendants of this brother of my GGGrandfather (John Turner the younger).
(Please note that Lane End is now known as Longton).

The details that I have are:
• Married Elizabeth Wright (1776-1835) on 12 Oct 1799. Her father John may be connected to the Wrights of Eyam Hall but I could never establish a link. He may have been a banker of Stafford.

Surviving children:
• Mary Ann Turner 1801-1878 - no children.
• John Turner 1803-? May not have survived.
• Sarah Turner 1806-1881 married William Palmer 1831 Stoke. They lived in Hanley. 6 children

Other births to Sarah:
• William Turner Palmer 1833-1872 (nothing else known)
• Henry Palmer 1835-1881 married Clara Atkin 1880 (Burton on Trent ref 6b 449 Henry Palmer / Clara Atkin). Child: Elsie Maud Palmer 1882-1965. (No Children).
• Frederick Palmer who married Ellen Johnson 1864 Hartshill. Frederick had 6 children including Ada Sarah who married Theophilus Hughes 1889 Newcastle.
• Martin Charles Palmer 1838-1873 (I don't think ever married)

The 1851 Census finds her at Edmund St. Hanley with William Palmer 55 as head working as Registrar of BDM Hanley. Sons William 19 Architect & Surveyor b, Shelton ... Henry 18 Writing Clerk b. Shelton ... Frederick 14 b. Shelton ... Martin 13 b. Shelton. They also had a 24yo servant.

The 1871 Census reveals she was receiving a Annuity. Living in her home (26 Church St Hanley) were her 3 sons Martin (architect), Henry (Timber Merchant) & William (architect) (all were over 30+). There was also a 6yo Nephew (b. Newcastle) and a maid.

Ernest Eric Young married, 1912, Elsie Maud, daughter of Col. H. Palmer, J.P., V.D.

Any help in this search would be greatly appreciated.

Staffordshire / Elizabeth Wright ABT 1776-1835
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 10:54 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the family of Elizabeth Wright ABT 1776-1835

The only solid lead I have on her is her marriage:

Staffordshire Advertiser Staffordshire, England 12 Oct 1799
laft (last), St. Mary's church in this town, William Turner, Esq. of Lane End, Wright, eldest daughter John Wright Esq of Lane End, Wright, eldest daughter John Wright Esq. banker, Stafford.

1799 Marriage has William of Stoke upon Trent and Elizabeth of Stafford
By License.
Witnesses, D Bayley and Richard Downward Bayley
Witness 2 signed as Richard Downward Bayley Junior.

Lane End is now known as Longton and William is of the Turner family of potters in Lane End.

Burial: 19 Mar 1835 St John`s Longton.

Another scrap of information is unproven but it appears that a Martin John Wright is her brother.

At one time I believed she may have been related to the Wrights of Eyam Hall however I was unable to sustain a link.

I have had a previous topic posted here to try to find her descendants with only partial success.

Staffordshire / John Turner of Longton
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 23:18 BST (UK)  »
John Turner bap. 29 Aug 1803, St. John's, Longton.
On checking his fathers will (William) it was found that he died intestate, and the document was in fact a signed statement by William's son to the effect that he was the legal heir. (I seem to recall that it was signed by John but I no longer have that information).

His parents were William & Elizabeth and I have good information on that side of the family however I'm looking for anything on this John. His marriage or death but it is his possible children that I'm looking for to link them elsewhere. (Is there a George?)

Derbyshire / The Wrights of Eyam Hall

I'm looking for a family tree of the Wrights of Eyam Hall

Basically I'm trying to find the family line of an Elizabeth Wright who married William Turner 9 Oct 1799 ... St Mary, Stafford. Her father was a John Wright (Banker) and mother was a Mary.

Now I know it appears that she was from Stafford but my initial early searches have come up blank. William Turners brother married well into the Hyde family so I'm thinking that so may have my William. I'm thinking that her father John Wright may have been one of the lesser sons of the Wrights of Eyam Hall.

If I could find a tree then I could disprove this thought and move the search back into Stafford.

I do have this Staffordshire Advertiser notice:
MARRIED.
Staffordshire Advertiser Staffordshire, England 12 Oct 1799
laft (last), St. Mary's church in this town, William Turner, Esq. of Lane End, Wright, eldest daughter John Wright Esq of Lane End, Wright, eldest daughter John Wright Esq. banker, Stafford.

The Common Room / Looking for the native place of John Doolan abt. 1832-1899
« on: Saturday 20 May 17 00:58 BST (UK)  »
I am chasing the family line of my cousins g/grandfather "John Doolan". From his death record he was born abt 1831. Died 1899 Glen Innes NSW Australia.

I have found an Assisted Immigrant record of a John Doolan who arrived on the David McIver 1852 aged 20 which reveals a birth year of 1832 so it is likely to be him. He arrived with a brother and sister "Mary" aged 18. Unfortunately the NSW Records Office has a broken link so I cannot see the actual page itself. I do know he was catholic and with a name like Doolan I expect he will be Irish.

My research into the ship reveals it loaded at Liverpool as well as Plymouth where it left 31 Dec 1851 with 4 cabin passengers and 344 Govt. Emigrants in steerage.

So can anybody advise me if I can find the embarkation records for the ship at Liverpool and Plymouth? I am hoping to find his place of birth or native place listed before I start searching for Baptism records.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

Staffordshire / Who is Jas Luckock? Longton 1800
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 06:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on an unknown man mentioned in a book written about the early potteries of Lane End now known as Longton. All I know is that he was the "Principal Modeller" of the potters named Turner. In other words he made or sculptured the raised reliefs (sprigs) found on their special pieces.

The first name "Jas" makes me think it is an abreviation for James. Does anybody have thoughts on this?

I have absolutely nothing on him. No Birth, Parents, Siblings, Marriage, Children or Death.

The Turners ceased production in 1804 and at a guess it is likely he would have been around 30-50 years but really I have no idea ... Just a feeling.

His work in producing these Sprig Moulds is beautiful and in several pieces I believe his work was superior to Wedgwood.

I believe he should be remembered as a great Artist & Sculptor if only we knew who he was.

Can anybody help.

Staffordshire / Descendant family line of John & Mary Turner
« on: Saturday 09 July 16 23:33 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find the descendant family line of John & Mary Turner who Leased Brewood Hall, Brewood. John died 1824 & Mary died 1840. Their children who had not already left continued to live in the Hall till 1853. John built Lightwood Lodge 1802 (probably the suburb was named after it) near Longton, Stoke on Trent. He was bankrupt in 1806 but likely continued to live in the lodge until 1815 and then leased Brewood Hall. (His parents were John Turner & Ann Emery of whom I have good information)

I have found info of nine children of John & Mary.
John Entwhistle Turner ... b.abt 1804 Lightwood d.1877 Emigrated to Australia 1828
Walter Turner ... b.abt 1806 Lightwood - possibly died 1882 Barton upon Irwell, Lancs (no further knowledge)
Ann Turner ... b. 6 May 1807 Lightwood - d. 8 May 1835 Brewood (died in the name of Turner so no marriage)
Mary Turner ... b. 20 Nov 1808 Lightwood (no further knowledge possibly died 1840)
Henry Turner ... b. abt 1809 Lightwood - d. Aug 1878 Wolverhampton. (He was a lawyer & would have moved to Wolverhampton sometime after his sister Ann's death May 1853. Haven't found a marriage yet. Bankrupt 1851)
Margaret Turner ... b. 1810 Lightwood. (d. possibly 1861 Worthing nr Brighton ???)
Thomas Turner ... b. 1812 Lightwood d. 1833 (Followed his brother to Australia in 1833)
Edward Turner ... b.abt 1812 Lightwood d. Sept 1837 Brewood
George Turner ... b. 1914 - ??? (vague info of a surgeon in the army in India ... Nothing found)

I have good information on the brothers John Entwistle and Thomas that settled in Australia but I'd like to know more of their siblings that remained in England.

Any information on their children would be gratefully received.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Old Turner Photo - Sydney Australia
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Could somebody give me an approximate date for this photo.

I believe it could be Thomas Turner who arrived in Sydney 1834 aged 22 and moved to the Yass/Canberra area 1837 where he settled and died 1883 aged 71 in Yass.

Sure it is a typical studio shot however does anybody think his coat is too large not to mention the collar of his shirt. And what is that thing around his neck?

All in all his dress appears out of character for a man of gentry who recently with his brother began sheep farming in Yass. Look at the hat.

This man appears to be in his 30's to me.

I haven't yet looked up the date that "Croft, Bros" operated in Sydney (being a typesetter I appreciate the effort made when hand lettering these old stylized trading names)

Any assistance/opinions would be gratefully received ... after all it may not be my Thomas.

Regards, Rob
