Lincolnshire / Obituary for ancestor Wragby
« on: Friday 15 May 09 05:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

One of my Ancestors William Shore died in Wragby 18th Nov 1844.  My question is as he was a general labourer,  would it be likely that he had an obituary in a newspaper?  And if so which newspaper should I look at for this area.

many thanks
Geoff

Hi

Could someone please help me find Hannam Richard Shores born 1846 Alford.  The details i have for him are-

1871 census living with parents The Rookery, Alford aged 24 occupation blacksmith (unemployed)
1877 marriage to Mary Ann Strickson spalding q1 7a, 489

I think Mary may have died 1889 Spalding but i am not sure.

Hannam Richard Shores just seems to have disappeared after 1871 census.

World War Two / 74th Field Company Royal Engineers
« on: Monday 29 September 08 01:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if someone can help me.  I am trying to find out more about this regiment but have had no luck so far on the net Googling.   I have a Souvenir Brochure for this regiment for Northwest Europe 1944-45 which my Uncle owned.

I beleive my Uncle Frederick John Silvester (now deceased) was in this regiment.  But i am not sure as he didnt like to talk about his experiences.  I have his war medals which show he served in France Germany and Africa. But unfortunately none of them are inscribed with his service number.

I have contacted the RE museum to ask them why i cant find any references to this regiment but they havent got back to me.

Any help would be great as i would love to get my Uncles service record but want to confirm he was definately in this regiment before i submit my application.

Regards
Geoff

Has anybody any ideas where i can look, or is there anyone out there who can help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

World War One / Lost at sea - death certificate WW1
« on: Wednesday 07 May 08 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

One of my relatives (Samuel Charles Falgate) was the skipper on HM Drifter "Hilary II" when it was sunk by a mine on 25th March 1916. I have managed to find some details at the National Archives about the incident. It has quite a lot of information about crew members but very little on the skipper. ???

According to CWGC he is listed on the Chatham Naval Memorial but i cannot find a death certificate for him is this usual? The boat apparently went down 5 miles of the coast of Kent.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Geoff

Occupation Interests / Joseph Burkett occupation Sailor 1841-1871
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 20:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My 3x Great grandfather Joseph Burkett born 1808 Lydd Kent was a Sailor according to the Census.  See below.

1841  Joseph Burkitt b c1811  Living Chapel Street  Parish of St Mary Dover   Sailor

1851 Joseph Burkett  B 1808 Lydd Living 17 Johns Place? Snargate Street, St Mary Dover  Sailor

1861 Joseph Burkitt  B 1808 Lydd Living 27 Military Road Hougham Dover  Sailor

1871 Joseph Burkett  B 1808 Lydd Living 8 York Street St Mary Dover Sailor

I have searched coastguard records online and searched for his name on the National Archives site and NMM website but i dont get any hits. I know that his son Frederick Joseph Burkett was a coastgaurd and that Fredericks son Harry also attended the Greenwich Hospital School so i assume that Joseph was in the Navy.

Would a Sailor mean that he was in the Royal or Merchant Navy?  Or could it also mean he was just a fisherman or another proffesion affiliated with the sea?  I would have thought that if he was a fisherman the census would say.

If it definately means he was in the Navy where would i search next?  I obviously dont know on which ships he served or where so i am a bit stuck.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Geoff

Hi

I am trying to find out information about Hilary II. All I know is that she was a drifter which was lost on 25th March 1916, British Isles.

I have a relative Samuel Charles Falgate who according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission was the 'skipper'.

Apart from this I cannot seem to find out any other information. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can look?

Kind Regards

Hi,

Please could somebody look up in the newspaper orbituaries for a Elizabeth Lilian May Silvester (Sylvester) who died 7th November 1933, aged 37.  She may also me down as Lilian Elizabeth May Slivester (nee King).  This is what is recorded on the memoriam card). She was the wife of John Silvester.  As far as i am aware they were living in the Battersea area of london.

We have been told that she committed suicide so their might be a coroners report, but we haven't managed to find anything yet.

Interestingly her father in law (William Sylvester, aged 75)  died in the December of that year and they are both interred in Streatham Cementry.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Geoff
