Lanarkshire / Alexander Cunningham and Christina (Christian) Waddell
« on: Friday 27 March 20 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning from the mid north coast of New South Wales, Australia.

I have recently had the good fortune of locating my 4 x Great Grandparents listed above.

I have searched for births, marriage and deaths for this couple.  As luck would have it I located only one entry for their marriage as a notation from a website for Brownlees:

http://www.brownlee.com.au/Pages/Betty-Rudolph/Brownlees-in-Scotland/Deaths-Mort-Cloths.html

Proclamations of Banns

Alexander CUNNINGHAM in this Parish & Christina WADDELL Parish of Shotts Jan 25th 1772 paid 1/- 1 1/3d

The information states it was in a book but without anything further.

I have yesterday also located their death registrations Alexander 22 May 1818 at Tarbrax and Christina (Christian) 16 January 1829.  Alexander appears as a Mort Cloth purchase whereas Christian's record for a Mort Cloth purchase gives a little more information which confirms Alexander's place of passing and the fact she was 78 years of age so I was grinning from ear to ear with this.

The most incredible thing was I had purchased a record for a Margaret King, wife of James Russell back in 1817 and further down the page was the entry for Christian / Christina.  It has shown me to go back and look more closely at my records I have in the folders for my Scottish side more thoroughly.

I am hoping someone may be able to direct me to the actual entry somewhere so I may be able to take a snapshot of the record for my own purposes.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Kind regards
Judi

Good morning from Australia.

I have recently had the good fortune to locate the passing of my 3 x Great Grandparents, listed above.

I have purchased the Register entries from ScotlandsPeople.

On these Death Registrations it is stated they were laid to rest at Shotts Churchyard.  When I go looking for this the dates do not fit in.  John passed away at Damside (Farm??) 8 Jul 1856 and Elizabeth at Stane, 17 November 1860.

Would there have been another cemetery for this time please or perhaps now known under a different name?

Thank you for reading this message, hoping someone will be able to help me with this search.

Kind regards
Judi

Fife / Margaret Gray, Margaret Hay aka Maggie Gray or Maggie Hay or Margaret Gray Hay
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello from mid north coast, New South Wales, Australia.

We, my cousin and myself are trying to solve the mystery of her 2nd Great Grandmother an my 2nd cousin three times removed.

Brief history Margaret Gray was born to Robert Gray and Janet nee King in Uddingston, Parish of Bothwell in 1845.  She married William Inglis Hay in 1872.

Margaret or "Maggie" as she was also known as went missing after the 1881 Scotland Census (living in Paisley with her husband and two children )and she was finally located in the 1891 Scotland Census as an inpatient at Woodilee Lunatic Asylum, Lenzie Parish of Kirkintilloch & County Dumbarton.  Maggie Gray was discharged from this facility in 1895.  No record has been located for her in the 1901 or 1911 Scotland Census.

After many wrong purchases for Death Registrations she was finally located as passing at Ayton Cottage, Blebo Craigs, Fife in 1932.

A search of the Scottish Post Office Directories did not locate Maggie at all between discharge and her passing.  However in the 1935 Scottish Post Office Directories revealed an Agnes Hay living at Ayton Cottage and a Valuation Roll for 1935 at Blebo Craigs, Parish of Kemback reveals an Agnes Hay as a Tenant of John Murray at Blebo Craigs.  Agnes Hay could quite possible a relative by marriage but we are unable to find any connection.

Has anyone ever looked into Blebo Craigs and would they be able to advise where I may approach to see if further information can be located.  I feel like I have exhausted everything but you never know.

Thank you for reading this message, I hope you can help my cousin and myself.   Judi

Derry (Londonderry) / Speer Family
« on: Monday 24 April 17 23:00 BST (UK)  »
I am going around in circles trying to locate the parents of John, Robert and William Speers who all immigrated to Tasmania, Australia between roughly 1866 and 1879.  Obituaries / death notices I have located on Trove (Australian website) for the boy’s passing states the parents to be Andrew and Mary Speers of Castledawson, Derry or Belfast, Ireland.

I have located two Andrew Speers passing away, one 20 June 1900 at Ballyknocker, Farmer with probate going to his son Andrew Speers who passed away 14 February 1920 at Ballyknocker.  This probate went to Isabella Dawson, sister.

I have also located Census for 1901 and 1911 for Andrew (died 1920).

John and Robert married in Christ Church (Anglican), Cullenswood, Tasmania.  John in 1869 to Catherine Scott and Robert in 1877 to Elizabeth Handley.

Working out from dates given in their Obituaries and Headstones, John was born about 1846 and said to be the second son born to Andrew and Mary Speers.  Robert was born about 1854.

William was born about 1860 and passed away in 1893 age 33, he never married.  In his Obituary it states he was the youngest son born to Andrew and Mary Speers of Castledawson, Derry, with the parents being of “advanced age”.  I believe this family may be Presbyterian but this is not confirmed.

In some instances I have also located information under the surnames of Spiers, Speirs, Speres in records for Tasmania.

Has anyone else researched this Speers family please or have the ability of researching areas I am unable to gain access to from here?  I have just about exhausted all that I can think of to search.

Cheers  Judi

Buteshire / Parish Registers and Shipping Loss
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 05:46 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon Forum members.  I am hoping someone will be able to help me with the following:

I have searched Scotlands People for deaths and/or burials using the surname Jamieson (and spelling variants) happening on Bute between 1 January 1538 to 31 December 1854.  The search yielded 23 records.

The first recorded death appears in 1769 with the deaths of Daniel Jamieson and William Jameson.  The last death for the 1700s is with John Jamieson 1786.

The only death recorded in the Parish Registers between 1786 and 1854 is listed as 1845 for ??? Jamieson, Cumbrae/Bute.

I then did a further search between the years of 1855 and 2013 as indicated on the website dropdown area.  This search yielded a further 160 records.

The first recorded death for Jameson appears in 1890.  The first death for Jamieson appears in 1855.

Is anyone able to tell me why there are no records between 1786 and 1855 with the exception of the one record in 1845 in relation to deaths and/or burials for Bute?

A second question is from the Bute County Directory 1904 – 1905 May 1905 Calendar – Anniversaries, etc.

On this page is a note 23 Tues (24) Custom House boat with Bute merchants lost, 1766.

Does anyone have any more information regarding this please?  My first thought was the book written by John Blain’s History of Bute.  Sadly I cannot access this book.  I would have to order the fiche from the LDS and then wait for its arrival.  As I live in Rural NSW I would need do a round trip of 220km plus north or a round trip 180km plus south to be able to view the fiche at an accredited place where the fiche could be sent.

Why I ask is my 5 x G Grandfather William Jamieson was listed as a Ferryer as follows on the Parish Registers for the marriage of John Jamieson to Janet McConachy in 1785:

“John Jamieson, tenant in Scalpsie son to the deceased William Jamieson late Ferryer at Scoulag in the parish of Kingarth “

John Jamieson is my 4 x G Grandfather, son to William Jamieson and Margaret Frazer

There were only 3 children born to William Jamieson and Margaret Frazer/Fraser with the last being born in 1764.  I am now wondering if William could have also been on this Custom House boat lost in 1766 which is why no further issue appear for this couple.

I am hoping someone will be able to answer my question regarding the Parish Registers for Deaths and/or Burials and also the Custom House Boat loss in 1766.

Cheers

Buteshire / Jamieson Family
« on: Sunday 09 June 13 09:01 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon Forum members.

I am trying to sort out my JAMIESON family and have been given various bits of information via family members.

My GGGGG G/father was William JAMIESON who married Margaret FRAZER.  Birth place for these two unknown.  Children of this couple are:
John JAMIESON (1761 Mount Stuart Shore (?) -1823 presumed to be Rothesay).
Elizabeth JAMIESON (1763 Mount Stuart Shore(?) - no further information known.
William JAMIESON (1764 Mount Stuart Shore (?) - no further information known.

John Jamieson is my GGGG G/father.  He married Janet McCONECHY (and various spellings for this lady appear).  They married 8 February 1785.  From the Marriage register I can confirm William had passed away before this time.  The register states:

"January 1785
John Jamieson, tenant in Scalpsie son to the deceased William Jamieson late Ferryer at Scoulag in the parish of Kingarth and Janet McConechy daughter to John McConechy  in the Butt of Scalpsie booked the..........married the 8th of February."

I believe Janet to be the daughter of John McCONACHY and Janet STEWART (STUART) born in 1761 but other family members have her birth as 1764.

In the book written by Alison Mitchell - "Pre-1855 Gravestone Inscriptions in Bute and Arran" John and Janet appear on page 25, no 392 with ages 63 for John and 66 for Janet whose name appears as MacCONACHY.  This would accord with my belief of her birth in 1761.

Is anyone else connected with this family please?  Are you able to assist with any family information at all please?

Can you someone also let me know where I may find a photograph of the headstone / monumental inscription for this couple.

Also if anyone else has information for William and Margaret (nee FRAZER) I would be very grateful to receive help with this couple.

My GGG Grandfather William Jamieson & Elizabeth nee King (daughter of John KING & Ann O'DONNELL) came to Australia, believed to be on the Statesman in 1851.  I am still yet to find the shipping records.

I have contacted Bute Sons & Daughters but have never received a reply other than to say someone will get in touch with me.  This was a few months ago.  I have sent follow up messages but sadly they go unanswered.

I have also been advised the JAMIESON family from Bute is a Sept of Clan STUART of Bute.

I have bought as many records as I can trying to sort out this family starting with the family of William & Margaret JAMIESON and working my way down to my GGG Grandfather.

Hoping someone will be able to assist with my requests.

Thanking you in advance.

Berkshire Completed Look ups / John NALDER & Susannah ?? - Completed
« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon from the mid north coast of NSW.

I am trying to find a marriage for John Nalder (christened 1800 Newbury - reported to be the son of Charles Nalder and Phyllis Willis - as told by others, but not confirmed by me) and Susannah (reported to be from either Horton, Wiltshire or Devizes, Wiltshire - according to the 1851 and 1861 Census).

I have looked on the Wiltshire Parish Registers where it is possible they may have married in Susannah's home town without success.

I am now wondering if they actually married in Newbury, Berkshire or surrounding area.

I have found a daughter born between 1821 - 1823 (depending on which Census you wish to believe regarding age) in Newbury, Berkshire.

Does anyone have these people in their family trees at all please?

Can anyone help me with a date and place for their marriage at all please?

John and Susannah settled in Clerkenwell, Middlesex (as it was then known as) and went on to have four more children, all sons from what I have found.  Thomas - born 1825, George - born 1827, Edward - born 1831 and William Edward - born 1834.  The sons were born in the Clerkenwell area.

Any help would be very appreciated.  This is my brick wall at the moment.

Cheers
Judi
