World War One / WW1 death - Percy?
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 19:15 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction as how to untangle this puzzle.......
Percy Holmes, son of Sarah and Arthur, was killed in WW1. He came from Lancashire.  The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have a record of a Percy Holmes, Private, Ser.No. 242321, killed 3/5/1917, age unknown, West Yorks Regt. (Prince of Wales Own), Arras Memorial. How can I discover if this is the 'correct' Percy without any further info?
I downloaded medal card for this Percy but nothing helpful here.

The Common Room / birth certificate query
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 20:11 BST (UK)  »
Not sure where to post this topic - so plumped for here....
I sent off for a Birth certificate from GRO to help with some research I am doing for a friend.  I found the correct quarter from freebmd for Walter Whitehead born 1849 in Heap in Lancashire. In due course back came the certificate but in the first name column it was blank..... and no other first name had been entered in the final column for names entered after registration.  From the certificate I know have the father's name ( Mark Whitehead) and the mother's name (Mary MS Buckley) and the info that father was a bookkeeper, etc.  My questions are: how can I be certain this is Walter? - indeed how did the index it came from 'know' he was Walter if it was not registered as such?!  Secondly - there is no reference to index of corrected entries so his name doesn't appear to have been added at a later date (perhaps he was not expected to survive - although he was registered 3 days after his birth).  Thirdly, because of the above, as Whitehead is a very common name in Lancashire, how do I know I have the 'right' one?  I have also checked the 1851 and 1861 censuses and in both he aged 1 and 11 and both times is not at home with hi parents - in one he is a visitor and in the other he is a nephew.  So I cannot verify his mother as Mary. OK - sorry for such a rambling query - but any insights welcomed! Thanks!

Down / Magiltons of Killyleagh
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother was Ellen Magilton from Killyleagh, daughter of Hugh.  She married Charles (Karl) Robert Kannenberg, a Prussian seaman who came to work for the McClurgs, sailing ships for them.  I cannot find out much about the Magiltons - they all seem to be Ellen and Hugh!  I have a few colourful stories about Capt. Kannenberg!  They later went to live in Toye and when he gave up sailing, they set up a shop there and had 9 children.
Any info. gratefully received!

The Common Room / Old Newspaper clippings/album
« on: Monday 19 November 07 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have been given an old scrapbook with pasted-in newspaper cuttings from WW2. I would like to know the best way to 'conserve' them so that they can be used by the children in my local school.  I can't un-stick them from the pages and anyway they are back to back on the pages. I thought about trying to laminate them in some way but again, problems as they are back to back.  The scrapbook pages are crumbling at the edges but the newsprint is, so far, holding on!
Any advice welcomed!
