United States of America / Chapel of the Pines Cemetery, Los Angeles, 1948
« on: Thursday 22 October 20 13:12 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any knowledge of the Chapel of the Pines Cemetery in Los Angeles?

The death certificate of my great aunt Margaret Chute states that she was cremated there on 3rd December 1948.  I am keen to discover whether a memorial stone survives.

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / SOUTH NORWOOD street name change
« on: Saturday 19 September 20 16:46 BST (UK)  »
A forebear was reported in The Era newspaper as being born at "2, Porter's Road, South Norwood" in 1886.  [see attached]

I have found an application to Croydon Council to change the name of "Porter Road" to Elm Tree Road in 1888, but cannot find any further reference to this street name in the area.

Can anyone advise me how to find what the "Porter's Road" of 1886 is called today?

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / St Martin in the Field burial record
« on: Saturday 04 April 20 19:49 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone explain the abbreviations - either "No G" or "SG" - on the parish burial record directly after each name?  Snippet example is from 1820, though the abbreviations are used throughout the record.

Many thanks indeed.

Canada / Herbert Benstead French, Oak Bay, Victoria, Vancouver Island, B.C.
« on: Sunday 16 December 18 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for descendants of a British family that emigrated to Canada in 1910:

Herbert Benstead FRENCH, M.A. (1867-1954), schoolmaster and later registrar
&
Henrietta FRENCH nee JOYCE (1869-1962).
Both died at Oak Bay, Vancouver Island.

Children:
Joan Elizabeth Oulton FRENCH (1905-76), born Broadstairs, Kent; died Victoria, BC.
Marjorie Mary FRENCH (1907- ), born Kent; death untraced
Robert Herbert Benstead FRENCH (c.1916-97), born & died Victoria, BC.

The mother, Henrietta, was the adopted daughter of Frederick HORNE and Elizabeth nee COWIE in London.  My hope is to trace FRENCH descendants who might have old photos of the family pre-emigration, in London.

A long shot, but many thanks to anyone who might have knowledge of or connections to this family.

South Africa / WEISBECKER - NICHOLSON - KISCH - FENOLN - BROWNELL
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm searching for any extended family in South Africa, some of whom (the BROWNELLs) I last met in Cape Town in 1993, but who are no longer living.

Are there any descendants out there of Charles WEISBECKER (b 1829 Cork, Ireland; d 1915 Cape Town) and Lolah Anne de BEAUREGARD (b 1844 Yorkshire; d 1933 Cape Town)?

Their daughters Lolah ('Annie'), Vida and Augusta ('Gussie') visited my family in England in the 1920s and 30s.  None married, but their sisters Theckla and Stella married a NICHOLSON and KISCH respectively, the NICHOLSON daughters then marrying a FENLON and BROWNELL.

The younger Lolah (b 1876 Brentford, Mddx.) had two family portraits by my 3+great grandfather Thomas Harrington Wilson, which I would love to trace to have copies made - particularly one of my 4+great grandmother Susannah HIGHAM née CRESPEL.

Should anyone know of any of this family in South Africa (still most likely in the Cape), I would be delighted to hear.  Thank you.

Sussex / WARRIOR SQUARE, St. Leonard's-on-Sea
« on: Saturday 22 August 15 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Anyone have local history knowledge of Warrior Square?
Is today's number 38 the same as in 1900?
I once read that the square had been renumbered sometime in the early 20th-century, but cannot find the source.  Can anyone confirm this?
Many thanks indeed.

London and Middlesex / SYDENHAM records 1816?
« on: Friday 23 January 15 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
Upon the christening of his son at St. Mary’s, Lewisham, in December 1816, Hans Jonas Lindgren (1793-1873) was described as a "Merchant of Sydenham".  By 1818, he had moved his family to Cheapside.

Do any records exist for Sydenham that might give any clue as to where HJL was living and what mercantile business he might have been in there?  (In the City, he was a ship agent & broker.)

Many thanks indeed for your insights.

Australia / ADELAIDE hotelier, James Rosenborgh Lindgren
« on: Sunday 04 January 15 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
An old handwritten history has recently been discovered amongst family papers, which has surprised me with the information that someone I thought had died young actually emigrated to Australia in the 1850s:

James Rosenborgh Lindgren (born 1835, London) became a hotelier in Adelaide.

If James married, then I'm now wondering whether it's possible that I have living relations over there?

I have been poking about on-line all week, but have found nothing whatsoever, with no Lindgren turning up in the area.  Anyone with knowledge of Adelaide history or records able to suggest how best to proceed from the UK?  Many thanks indeed.

London and Middlesex / HIGHGATE SCHOOL CHAPEL records, 1745
« on: Friday 12 December 14 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
A Pauper Settlement record of 1752 refers to a marriage between Isaac Watlington and Hannah "at a Chapel in Highgate about 7 years ago" (i.e. c.1745).

The only chapel I can find in Highgate for this period is the School Chapel, which until its demolition in 1832 was also used as a chapel-of-ease by the local population, which had no church.

Anyone know if the records of the School Chapel survive?  I'm eager to find Hannah's surname as she is my direct forebear (by her second marriage).

Many thanks!
