I have found an ancestor on a Dandy Fishing boat in 1881. It was a smallish boat with six hands operating out of Ramsgate in Kent.

I have found various references to Dandy Fishing Vessels but no explanation as to what these were.
Please can anyone explain?

I am trying to identify where a family lived in Bristol at various dates. I am finding it difficult becsue so much of central Bristol has been demolished and redeveloped. I would like to trace on at least the 1902 maps. Hoping to find someone a bit more knowledgeable than me.

1) "Gillams Court" later "Gilhams COurt", St James. - 1841 and 1851 census. Within St Mary Redcliffe area. In census listed  between West Street and Little James Street. Internet sources confirm a poor area hit by 1849 cholera epidemic.

2) Union PLace, St Philips. 1859, 1860. I have found a reference to a Union Place off Picton Lane but this does not look in right area.

3) Wellington COurt. 1861 census. There is a Wellington Court today - a modern block off Ashley Road. But not sure if this is built in same place.

4) Cross Street, St Pauls. 1871 Actually this one is probably Ok. In Census by Penn Street which still exists so know area to look in on old  map. Will leave it here for completeness

5) Water Street, St Pauls. 1881 and 1886. Census near Callowhill Street and Leak Lane. Found reference to Sugarloaf pub in Water Street.

Any help in locating these near present day street so can search old map gratefully received.

I have been tracking family members during world war one.
Intrigued to find Edward Trevelyan joining Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Edmonton in March 1916.
(per enlistment paper on Ancestry)

Edward was born in Sampford Arundel, Somerset England in 1884,
In 1911 he was working as a carpenter and living in Wellington, Somerset.

The enlistment paper is definitely his, as it gives his mothers address in Wellington - although he gives his date of birth as 1886 which is surprising as it was registered in 1884 (could be Ancestry or BMD transcription error).
It gives address of 326 4th Streeet edmonton and says he was working as a book keeper.

I have not found his passage to Canada and not sure how long he stayed there or whether he settled there permanently.

How can I check out what happened to him?

I am following up a family member who served in the English Navy between 1868 and 1878. Subsequently I cannot trace him except for possible death on ship in Cape Town in 1880 and wondering how to check this out.

Details are:
Albert Bishop. Born 1850 Wellington, SOmerset.
Enlisted 30/4/1865 (per NA ADM 188/6/236)
Served ten years 16/6/1868 to 1878 (perNA  ADM 139/733/3) - on ships Agincourt, Oal and Shah.

I cannot trace him after this.

There is a possible death (per findmypast site) of an A Bishop on SS Melrose in Cape Town in 1880.
Wonder if he became merchant seaman after he left navy and this is him.
CAnnot find anything online about this Melrose and not sure best way of checking this out.
