Occupation Interests / nightwatchman
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
My ex-army ancestor is described at different times and in different records as a nightwatchmwan sergeant and a fire brigade superintendent. Would anyone be able to tell me if this is likely to have been the same job? Thanks.

The Common Room / workhouse infirmary
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Like many people, I have ancestors with workhouse connections, including one old lady who died in the workhouse infirmary in 1909. There's no other evidence to show that she was a workhouse resident, so I'm curious to know whether she necessarily was one, or whether she might just have been admitted to the infirmary when she became ill. Many thanks for any answers people might have.

Armed Forces / married life in the armed forces
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who married in 1881 as a private in the South Wales Borderers, when he was living in barracks, and I'd very much like to know what his early married life would have been like. Would he have lived with his wife in married quarters? By 1891 he was a colour sergeant and he and his family had their own house - was there a particular rank at which you were allowed to move out of barracks? Thanks in advance for any answers people might have.

Armed Forces / age restrictions 19c

A quick question - my g.g.g.father joined the South Wales Borderers in 1879, when he was 17, and gave his age as 18, is this because under-18s weren't allowed to enlist?

Kent / Maldon, Kent
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
This is given as the birthdate of my ancestor James Hodge in the 1861 census, but I can't find any other evidence for its existence. Is it a mistake for Maldon, Essex, or could there have been a Maldon in Kent at some time - or is a place with a similar name meant? If so, what might it be?

This isn't the only strange thing about the entry, since James' age is given as 32, whereas he'd mysteriously become 44 when he died in 1864. I don't know what else might be wrong!

Occupation Interests / occupations on family trees
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 12:19 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of a standard way to record occupations on a paper family tree? Do they go before or after the death date? What if someone changed his (or her) occupation?

Census and Resource Discussion / census occupations - help!
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
One of my ancestors' occupation is given in the 1901 census as 'Brewery Horse Keeper', over which someone has written 'Groom'. I've noticed similar annotations elsewhere. Does anyone know what their function is?

Armed Forces / Was he a soldier?
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 22:52 BST (UK)  »
This is a humble request for advice from a novice in the wonderful world of military genealogy.

I want to know whether a man was a soldier or not. I know his name (George Hoose), approximate date of birth (abt 1859) and birthpace (Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire), but haven't found any record of him after the 1871 census, nor do I have any idea what regiment he may have joined.

So why do I think he might have been a soldier? Well, his brother John married a lady called Annie Goodman, who already had a small son - my great-grandfather. He was born Herbert William Goodman, but always thereafter known as William Herbert Hoose.

Now William Herbert/Herbert William married twice, in 1905 and 1916, and both marriage certificates identify his father as the deceased GEORGE HOOSE! In 1905, WH gave 'Labourer' as George's occupation - but in 1916 'Private Soldier'.

Of course I realise that this George might have been a complete fiction, attractive thought it is to imagine the young soldier perhaps dying in combat, leaving his sweetheart to bear their child in shame, yet eventually to be comforted by his brother.

But I can't help thinking that finding records of any military career could solve the question, or at least make it far more probable that George is my great-great-grandfather. The problem is, I have read that it is very difficult to trace military ancestors without knowing their regiment.

So - do I have any hope?

Devon / 'Landford, Devon'
« on: Monday 02 March 09 23:47 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1871 census, my ancestor Elizabeth Priscott, nee Methers or Metters, stated that she had been born in 'Landford, Devon'. Where was this? Google searches find no evidence that any such place has ever existed.

However, I see there is a place in Devon called Langford, although it does not appear to be a proper parish. Is there any kind soul out there with the local knowledge to tell me if 'Landford' is likely to be an error for 'Langford'? And if so, where oh where are the parish registers located?

Many thanks!
