Australia / Eileen Mary SPILLANE - can't find her child
« on: Sunday 17 May 20 06:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking for any trace of my great-aunt's child. I came by this information through an article in Trove and it has me stumped. The article reads as follows:

FALSE REGISTRATION OF BIRTH.
A charge against Wm. S. Spillane, grain broker, of making a false statement in registering the
birth of his daughter's illegitimate child was investigated at the St. Kilda police, court on Friday. Spillane pleaded guilty. Considerable public interest was exhibited in the prosecution, the accused being the father of a youth of eighteen years, who, after being shockingly neglected, ran away with the intention of killing himself, but fortunately fell Into the hands of the police. The youth is now -In the care of the Christion Brothers at Geelong,
Eileen M, . Spillane, a young girl wearing A short dress, said she gave birth to a illegitimate. child at the residence of Nurse Arscott, Inkerman St., on 19th June, 1906. Her father took
her to the place, and afterwards went with her to Broadmeadows, where the child was given over to the Foundling Hospital authorities. Witness went under the name of Moon at Nurse Arscott's. Nurse Arscott said that in May last year accused introduced himself to her as .Mr. Moon, and arranged for the accommodation of his daughter. Blanch Manly, registrar of births, deaths and marriages, St. Kida, stated that on 22nd June a child was registered in the name of Dorothy Maloney by a man who gave the name, of Wm. Maloney, and signed the register as the father. Before registering witness read the caution that any. false statement would be perjury.
Detective Coonan deposed to accused having on 12th inst. admitted registering his daughter's child in the name of Dorothy Moloney, so that the family should not he disgraced. Witness reminded him that, he made a. false. registration, and lie answered, "I know I did." He then stated that he did not know the name of the father of the child. Until-. Detective Sainslmry told him, accused was not aware that- the child was dead.
Accused. was committed for trial

Now, I have searched Vic BDM, plus everywhere else I can think of chasing info in this article but cannot seem to find anything at all.

As you can see from the first paragraph, this was not the first time that year that this family was under scrutiny (and there's more...but that is not for today).

Can't find a birth or a death, in any combination of names.

If anyone can suggest anything at all I can try, I would be most grateful.

Cheers,
Julie

Roland Patrick NORTON (s/o John NORTON & Mary Jane BLAKENEY)

Died 10 May 1915 - buried Shrapnel Valley Cemetery same day

Roly was born in Temora, New South Wales on 14th March 1883. For some reason he fudged his age on enlistment and told them he was 27y9mths (I've only just noticed this!)

I never knew him and he died before my dad  was born (he was my father's uncle). From searching Trove and all those other resources we all know I found these Memoriam notices for him. They are all from the Syndey Morning Herald, courtesy of Trove.

"SMH – 23 Dec 1915
PRIVATE R. NORTON.
Private Leonard K. Meacock. writing to Miss Norton, of Watson's Bay, gives an ac-count of the death of her brother, Roland Norton, at Gallipoli. The writer says:-"He
was killed at Pope's Hill. We were on the slope of the hill behind our trench fixing
up a kind of regimental store for food and ammunition, when a '4' shrapnel hurled right Into us, bursting just above your brother's head. One of the bullets entered his forehead.

Death was Instantaneous. Your brother was the most popular man among us, and we certainly could not have had a better 'brother In arms.' His death was a great blow to us all, and we lost a most lovable companion, ns well as a perfectly fearless comrade. If a call went up for more ammunition, your brother was the first to 'hump' a thousand
rounds on his shoulder and climb up the cliffs without a thought of the many snipers lying In wait all round, and the continual bursting of tho shrapnel."

SMH – 10 May 1918
NORTON-In memory of my old pal, Roland (Blue), son of John Norton, Watson's Bay, killed in action, May 10, 1015 Inserted by Bill Sheedy (OAS).

NORTON -In loving memory of Roland, son of John Norton, Watson's Bav, killed in action, May 10, 1915 Inserted by his old friends, L and W It. Cosgrove, (OAS.)"

From these stories I think I would have liked him.

RIP Roland.

Lest we Forget

His dod is 1959 in Melbourne. Dob about 1899 in South Melbourne. He married a Gladys FARR on 3 December 1925, also in South Melbourne.

I have no working disk drive at the moment so am unable to use my VIC BDM CD's. It would be greatly appreciated if some kind person would be able to have a look and see if they could point us in the right direction.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Percy Mansfield BLAKENEY - died Levin 1950
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 03:34 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon!

I am trying to find more info about this man, and his life in New Zealand.

His parents were James BLAKENEY and Rhoda HAMILTON (married Sydney in 1872). Percy was born in Tumut NSW in 1881.

I have his birth details, and immediate family (ie brothers & sisters - he was 1 of 10 or 11) in Australia but no idea when he arrived in NZ. I believe he married a Selena Morris in 1920 (this from NZ BDM historical records) but can't see any children. Obviously possible they didn't have any!

I am not familiar with NZ sources (still trying to talk my husband into looking into his family) so would appreciate any advice/ suggestions as to other places I could look.

Cheers,
Julie

Australia / Ambrose BLAKENEY - died July 1890 in Redfern, NSW, age 47.
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 03:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello there,

I couldn't find a birth for him - his age at death in 1890 indicates that he was born about 1843. I found a death notice on Trove, also a funeral notice. From NSW BDM, I believe he was married to Jane BYRNE/S. I don't yet know whether he belongs in my lot, but would like to find out. He & Jane had a son, Ambrose Henry (died 1919). This all I have at the moment.  I've checked all the BDM's I have access to but no luck.

I can't check my Digger CD's as my disk drive is not currently working. I would be most grateful if anyone could give me an idea of where to try next.

Cheers,
Julie

Australia / Leslie John WHEELER - Death & burial sought
« on: Monday 06 January 14 01:00 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning,

I am looking for the death and burial of my aunt's husband. He was born 15 Nov 1914 in Pyrmont NSW. He married my aunt, Jean Mary NORTON (29 Mar 1917 - 10 Jan 1962), in 1942. They had 1 child, Michael (26 Feb 1953 - 10 Nov 1998).

Can't find him on NSW BDM, doesn't come up oncemetery records that I can find. He was in the army and, according to my Dad, an RSL chap was at his funeral. Can anyone suggest where I might look next? All of these people are deceased so there are no privacy issues.

Cheers,
Julie
