World War Two / Help in dating a photo, please
« on: Wednesday 30 June 21 14:57 BST (UK)  »
A friend, from Belgium, has asked if someone might help in identifying the year this taken. It was taken sometime (we think), between 1944 and early 1946 in Belgium. I’ve added both the black and white version and the colourised one, as the colourised one may be deceptive. I know Belgium was officially liberated by early February 1945, but I know some soldiers stayed longer to clear mines, etc.
The outfit may be that of a British soldier (with winter jerkin), but may not be. If it is the person we think it is he may have come from the Beeston, Nottinghamshire area - this person was a friend of the family at that time. My father was in the BLA at that time and a photo of him in the RASC part of the BLA shows him wearing a similar jerkin.
As I know there are some very clever people in this group who know a lot about various types of vehicles; I’m hoping you might be able to help.
Many thanks in advance + best wishes to you all,

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Grantham burial/cremation help needed, please.
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
I'm helping a friend researching his ancestors, and we need help to locate where Geoffrey Ernest Gooch was buried in the Grantham area. He died on the 23 November, 1964; but the burial/cremation might have been delayed. I believe his wife, Florence Elizabeth Gooch may be buried in the New Somerby Cemetery (Grantham Cemetery) - she died in June, 1961.
As my friend doesn't live in Grantham any help given would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
I found this beautiful photograph whilst browsing through a box of unwanted photographs today, at a family history show. I thought she deserved a good home; and I thought I'd like to share her with you, too.
I would be very grateful if someone could please date her for me.
As you can see she is in need of a restore, so if anyone has the time to do this I would be extremely garteful.
I'm also happy for her to be coloured, if anyone so wishes ( I know Paula loves ones like this :))
I'll leave her in your capable hands.
Thank you.
Paulene :)
P.S. Back to follow.

World War One / Is he an Old Contemptible, please?
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 01:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I believe this may be a photograph of my grandfather, William Riley, who was an acting RSM in WW2, having served in WW1.
The lapel badge may hold the clue - can anyone tell me what it is, please?
Thank you.
Paulene :)

Hi everyone,
As I live a good distance from Staffordshire, and don't drive, I wondered if someone might be able to help me in establishing  whether a wedding took place in 1809, at Tipton, Staffordshire. I say this because the entry on the IGI is a submitted entry, and not an official parish register entry.
I am trying to establish whether the bride might be the sister of my own ancestor, Thomas Adams. I cannot find Thomas's baptism, and it is interesting to see that both he, and Rebecca, have their births described as Dudley Port, Tipton. This may be just a coincidence, in that they both lived there later on, but Rebecca's second husband's surname was Smith, and Thomas was married to Ann/Nancy Smith. So, I feel this is worth investigating for any clues.
I have sent for the witnesses at her second marriage to Timothy Smith, plus looked at informants on both Rebecca's and Timothy's death certificates, but nothing to show this connection so far - this is my last shot! (Unless someone else can come up with another idea).
Details of the marriage are as follows:
William Hatton married Rebecca Adams 23 May, 1809, Tipton.
Any help is most appreciated, and if I can help in return I am only too willing to oblige.
Many thanks.

Hi everyone,
I have been meaning to ask for a restore on this photograph for some time. I am hoping to ask rootschatters if they can help me compare the people in the family photograph with other individual photos I have in my collection.
I know the photograph must have been taken sometime between 1877(see back of photo) and 1884 when William Richards, the gentleman seated centre in the photo died.
I hope the quality is good enough for you to work on - I scanned it at 600dpi - colour mode, but if you need it re-doing you have only to ask. It's a long time since I posted one for restore , so I'm a bit out of practice!
Black and white, sepia or colour would be most gratefully accepted (I love them all, but know that the colour ones take a lot of time so will not be offended if you are busy and cannot manage this).
Look forward to seeing the photo come back to life.
Many thanks,
Paulene :)

The Common Room / Anyone having problems with BMDregisters, please?
« on: Thursday 27 November 08 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,
Before I resort to asking for help from technical experts, could anyone check to see if they are having a similar problem to me when trying to get onto page 2 of the search results given on:
http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/
I typed in the name Sarah Cooke, and the list came up, but when I tried to get onto the second page of results it came up with a fatal error message.
Thank you for your help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date please + age of sitters
« on: Saturday 18 October 08 14:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I have this photograph in the Richards family album, but at present haven't worked out who they might be.
I'd be extremely grateful if you could give me an approximate date, and also help me gauge the age of the couple in the photograph.
Thank you.
Paulene :)
P.S. If anyone does have a desire to work on the photograph they are more than welcome, but it isn't essential.  (*I'm not sure if this intial scan is suitable, anyway).

Kent / New aid to help find relatives' graves in Kent cemeteries
« on: Monday 14 July 08 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I recently posted a link on the England general board, but felt I should let the people viewing the Kent board in on it, too.
A new site has just been launched last week, which has records from general cemeteries in your area. Have a look for your missing relatives - but don't waste time! (free searches at the moment - but it is only a temprorary situation).
See:

Good luck + happy hunting!
Paulene :)
