Family History Beginners Board / Wandsworth Prison inmate 1901
« on: Saturday 10 February 18 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Please can you help find my grandfather? Where can I search for more information on his prison records?

He was George Samuel DAVIES born 22 OCT 1870 Wandsworth, London, England
He was said to be in prision due to breaking "the breach of promise" - calling off an engagement. This seems to be him on the 1901 census:

George Davies 33
abt 1868
Prisoner
Birth Place: Walworth, Surrey, London
His Majestys Prison Wandsworth
Piece: 488 45 23 1

Any help much appreciated, thank you!

Please can you help colour this 1914 photo of my step-grandfather in the East Yorkshire regiment?  He was a P.O.W. in France, which probably saved his life.  Many thanks!

Wales / Tracing family tree of W.H. Davies (poet)
« on: Tuesday 31 May 11 15:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm following an old family story which may or may not be true: that we are related to W.H. Davies (poet).  He came to tea with my great-grandmother in London.

I'm trying to find out who his parents were?
If he had any brothers and sisters?
If he had any children?
(Info maybe on a census?)

He was born William Henry Davies or W. H. Davies 3 July 1871 6, Portland Street in the Pillgwenlly district of Newport, Monmouthshire the son of an iron moulder.

He is best known for "The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp" and died 26 September 1940.

Thanks for your help!

Please can anyone suggest a family history programme which would produce a good clear chart showing sibblings, cousins and second marriages etc?  Also, one that would include photos?

I use Legacy and only seem to get a standard pedigree with this.

Thanks for your help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Help to find missing Barnsley person
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone suggest where I can find out more about my missing ancestor George STENTON?

He was born in Barnsley in 1876, the son of William Thomas Stenton and Mary Ann Lockwood.

I know he was close to the family and suddenly disappeared out of character never to be seen again.  His mother Mary Ann, was very distressed, visited several large record offices around the country in the hope of tracking him down but found no trace.

I haven't found him on the 1901 census or in the death records.

Any suggestions on how I might find him would be great.

« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
It is exciting to have access to the 1911 census and I'm sure a lot of you are busy finding your own ancestors but if you get the chance please can you help me find my grandfather?  I've ordered numerous downloads which are not the right one!

Here are his details:

George Samuel Davies
born 22nd Oct 1870 Wandsworth the son of George James Davies (dec) and Fanny (nee Clapp widowed so may have married William Shroll by then)
George was possibly working as a Master Barber or Musician, Organist
He married 22nd Jan 1911 Emma Hetty Maher
His children were: John Henry Churchill Davies (known as Harry) born 20th Jun 1910, Alice Caroline Esther Davies 26th Aug 1911 (known as Anna)

He was probably living in London possibly Southwark close by area.

Any suggestions much appreciated.  Thank you.

Please can you make this photo a little lighter and maybe add some colour?

It is the only photo I have of my grandfather, George Samuel Davies.  It was taken around 1930 when he was about 60 years old and dying of TB.

All help much appreciated!
