The Common Room / Names in Victorian England
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 07:00 GMT (UK)  »
Here's an interesting factoid...

Having transcribed about 50,000 census entries from 1861 in Sussex - about half of them female - we have found just ONE girl called Victoria.  Victoria had been Queen for nearly a quarter of a century by now; why haven't parents named their daughters after her?  Any suggestions? ???

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Ashton - where or what is it?
« on: Monday 11 February 08 07:31 GMT (UK)  »
William Steel, described as "of Ashton", born in Upham about 1699. He's the top of our tree at the moment, but we'd like to find out more. Where is Ashton, for a start? Can you help please?

Devon / Charmouth Chapel
« on: Monday 11 February 08 07:19 GMT (UK)  »
Edwin John BRICKELL was a coastguard stationed in Charmouth 1870s and 80s, where his children were born. Some were baptised at the independent Chapel. I'd love extra info about the Chapel, the Coastguard station or the family...

Sussex / Ruth EADE of Framfield
« on: Monday 11 February 08 07:13 GMT (UK)  »
While in New Zealand a year ago we found in a museum a sampler worked by Ruth Eade of Framfield School, aged 12, dated 1839. There is no Framfield in New Zealand so the museum staff thought it must be from the English Framfield. The 1861 census shows a Ruth Eade of the right age,and she seems to have married Mr Ware of Uckfield who owned the brickworks in Newtown. However we can't find any NZ connection so far. Does this ring bells with anyone?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hill Hall or Mill Hall, Alton
« on: Saturday 09 February 08 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1841 Census we have found some relatives apparently on a Farm called Hill Hall or Mill Hall in Alton.  It's next to Brick Kiln Cottages.  Does anyone know anything about this farm or its location, please?

Sussex / FreeBMD... and FreeCEN
« on: Saturday 09 February 08 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
FreeBMD is a well known search site that we use all the time.  Not everyone knows about its sister site FreeCEN which aims to provide a similar FREE search routine for the Censuses.  It's a good alternative to Ancestry, and often has more accurate listings.
We are always looking for new volunteers to help transcribe from the original sheets and make the database complete.  If you've received help from other researchers in the past (and who hasn't?), could you give some time to this project, and make your contribution to the world of Family Research?
We are particularly interested in hearing from people with an interest in the Sussex censuses - you might even be able to choose to work on a village where you have connections.
Follow the link from the FreeBMD home page, or get in touch with us...
