Graveyards and Gravestones / What is this stone commemorating?
« on: Monday 23 October 23 08:41 BST (UK)  »
A family member has recently moved into a house in Leicestershire. In the garden they found this stone, lying loose in the undergrowth. The house dates from 1911, but my assumption is that it has been bought here more recently and there is no historical connection.
It has a wheatsheaf at the top, the initials EB, and the date 1754.
Surely it’s not a gravestone. Any ideas what it might commemorate? A boundary marker?
Thanks in advance of your answers.

Europe / FRANCE, Haute Savoire, Vinzier near Evian les Bains, Maurice Mouhot 1938
« on: Wednesday 05 July 23 17:06 BST (UK)  »
My mother, now deceased, went on a school journey from London to Vinzier in June 1938. The party lodged in the boarding house of Maurice Mouhot and family.
Is there any resource (on or off line) such as census, directory, etc, that might locate where exactly this boarding house might have been.
I assume one approach would be to contact the Marie, which I will follow up.

World War Two / Persons rejected for/exempt from military service
« on: Monday 14 November 22 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
My father (born 1920 in London) did not serve in the military in WW2. I am trying to work out why, and if any record exists.

He wrote to his girlfriend (later his wife, my mother) in May 1940 to say he had been to enlist in the Coldstream Guards, but there’s no further mention in their letters and he didn’t end up in the military as he spent the War in Central London in the family bakery business.

I can think of a number of reasons why:
a) he was a baker – but reserved occupation for this only applied to those over 25, so not applicable to him
b) he could have been regarded as a Swiss national, though not by birth (born in London to Swiss parents)
c) medical reasons (though I don’t recall him having any obvious medical conditions at that stage of his life)

A couple of questions, please:
a) were there any records kept of such ‘rejects’, to record why he wasn’t serving?  If so where?
b) if he did go to enlist, would he have been given paperwork for the rejection? And are there examples of this?

Searching on-line of all the major resources for related records does not come up with any results for him.  Nor have I found anything to answer the questions above.

I would appreciate some expert views on this.

World War One / John Dunne PO Stoker HMS Nessus KIA Jutland
« on: Monday 05 September 22 18:26 BST (UK)  »
I am doing some research for a friend whose relative (above) died on 1 June 1916 on HMS Nessus.

I have his service record and have read up a few Jutland histories to try and find out the circumstances of his death but without success.  Only 7 crew died in the battle, so the assumption is there was some damage caused.

The ships log is at TNA (ADM 53/52512) so I could see about getting a quote for a copy but don’t know how useful that might be.

Can anyone give any info or a guide to further steps.

Thank you in advance.

Europe / SWITZERLAND Certificat d’origine pour une personne non mariee
« on: Wednesday 25 September 19 16:59 BST (UK)  »
I have just received a copy of this document for my grandfather, issued in Valais in 1910.
Would anyone be able to tell me what purpose it served.  Is it a sort of passport?

(apologies for a missing accent in mariee....don’t know how to do one on an ipad!)

Technical Help / Heredis and ipad 2018 COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am using the Heredis app on a new ipad to display the info, with the main database being held in another programme on a Windows laptop.  Note the main programme is not Heredis. The instructions for transferring the gedcom is to attach to an email sent to myself then in the ipad mail app tap the attachment and select Heredis.
The problem is that the gedcom file arrives on the ipad as a .dat file.  No idea why - the sent email still has a .ged attachment.
What is going on?! More usefully, can anyone suggest a solution.
PS: there is an alternative transfer method using itunes, but it's a much longer task.
cheers,
Paul

World War One / British Army enlistment for a Russian national
« on: Wednesday 21 November 18 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching for a friend, and his grandfather was a Russian national, age 34 in 1914, resident in UK since 1893 and married in 1905 to a British lady with 2 children by 1914. He was employed as a Cabman. I have his naturalisation papers (in 1920), which states that he “was called to military service, appealed and was allowed 3 months exemption” (no date or reason for this is given). Then on 3 November 1917 he joined the 3rd Yorkshires.
Now two questions:
From May 1916 a married man would be called up. How could he have avoided conscription from May 1916 to November 1917, other than the 3 months exemption?
What was the position for foreign nationals and conscription in WW1?  The various on-line articles I’ve read make no reference to the position for non-British.

Many thanks.
