Hampshire & Isle of Wight / North Hampshire newspapers
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 19:23 BST (UK)  »
Over the last few years many local newspapers have been added to British Newspaper archive. Unfortunately as far as I can see the coverage for North Hampshire is not good. The only paper I can see is Hampshire Chronicle from circa 1772 until 1909, which has some coverage. It would be useful if this one source could have coverage extended until 1950. Two further titles which would help enormously are Hants & Berks Gazette and Newbury Weekly News (which also covers West Berkshire). If anybody wants more coverage of North Hants you can vote for new papers to be added, I'm not sure how much notice is taken of votes though. You can vote whether you have a subscription or not. The link below should take you to the page to vote for Hants & Berks Gazette.

Canada / Arthur & Elizabeth Ellen Wallace
« on: Friday 26 April 13 11:34 BST (UK)  »
Arthur & Elizabeth (originally Nash) left Liverpool on 22 April 1911 & arrived Montreal on 4 May 1911 with sons Arthur & Stanley Clement. Arthur was a farm bailiff before emigrating & was born 30 April 1870 in Silchester, Hampshire & Elizabeth born circa 1870 in Aldermaston, Berkshire. Son Arthur was born circa 1893 in Aldermaston & Stanley on 27 March 1897 in Marlow. Stanley served in the Canadian army in WW1 & in 1915 the family was living at 65 Major Street in Toronto. Arthur junior married 5 August 1916 to Annie Lilian Newton & Stanley on 7 January 1926 to Aileen Thompson both in York, Ontario. Unfortunately I cannot trace Arthur & Elizabeth after 1915 so any help greatly appreciated.

Berkshire / Henry Harmsworth (1852) - Brimpton
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Henry was born 1852 in Brimpton. I have been told he married Mary Ann Wickens on 23 April 1871 at St Peter, Brimpton. Unfortunately I cannot find Henry in 1861 census. So at the moment I do not know the parents of Henry. I have other links to some Harmsworths from Brimpton so I'm trying to work out if Henry is linked to this other branch.

I have more details of children of Henry & his burial etc if needed.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / George TRIPP (1878)
« on: Thursday 15 September 11 12:00 BST (UK)  »
George TRIPP was born 1878 in Wargrave, Berkshire son of George TRIPP & Caroline BANBURY. George senior died in Q1 1885. In the 1911 census George junior was recorded as a boarder at 32 Garnet Street in Saltburn by the Sea. The residence was a boarding house with eight rooms run by a widow Mary Slater aged 50, two daughters Margaret & Edith were also recorded. George was an engineer working for a heating company & single.

Unfortunately I have been unable to trace George junior after 1911 so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Buckinghamshire / George TRIPP (1841-1885) & Caroline BANBURY (1848-1940)
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 10:00 BST (UK)  »
George TRIPP (born Wargrave, Berks) & Caroline BANBURY (born Baughurst, Hants) married 9 October 1877 in Tadley, Hants. Over the next 8 years they had five children, George (born 1879 in Wargrave), Emily (1880 Wargrave), Edith (1882 Wokingham), Alice (1884 Eton) & Plessey (1885 Eton). George senior died Q1 1885 in Berkhamsted RD.

In the 1891 census Caroline & all five children were living in Upton cum Chalvey. In 1901 Caroline & three children were in Slough & the other two were lodging as servants relatively close (one in Bucks & one in Ealing).

However in the 1911 census I cannot find no trace of any members of the family. It looks as though Caroline died Q4 1940 in Eton RD. I managed to find a marriage for daughter Edith in Ontario, Canada in 1912 & she continued to live in Canada. Plessey was an unusual name & that has enabled me to find her death in Q4 1974 in Slough RD as Plessey QUIGLEY. I have been unable to trace any marriage details. It is the correct person as she was the informant on the death of a relative.

Can anybody help me find the family in 1911 or know what happened to the other children of the marriage.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Soper family of Hannington etc
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 01:08 GMT (UK)  »
A little while ago while idly looking at google book search I found details of a book about the Soper family, further details below:-

Pedigree of the Family of Soper of Hannington,Kingsclere,North Oakley,Dummer and Preston Candover,Hampshire
By Soper Family
Published by Gibson,Bloxham & Banbury, 1959

I have spoken to the British Library & they do not hold a copy.

It looks as though this was probably a private publication. Any suggestions where a copy of the book may be held to inspect or where a copy purchased could be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
