London and Middlesex / Reports of Victorian society marriages
« on: Friday 03 December 10 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
The brother of my great great grandfather was a professional (but not well known today) landscape artist named John Thorpe who had many works exhibited at the Royal Academy.  During the middle years of the nineteenth century he was living in London. On 12 May 1864 at St Matthew's, City Road, Finsbury his son Bertram Thorpe married Katherine Anastasia Laurence, the daughter of Samuel Laurence, the famous portrait painter who has many portraits of prominent Victorians still exhibited in the London Portrait Gallery.  I would imagine that this would have been an important "society" wedding of the day and I would love to discover if there are any reports of this wedding so that I can discover who attended.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which publications might have such information and is there anything on line.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys

In the late 1920s my father was a pupil teacher (aged only 15!) at Cauldon Lowe School.

One a week he travelled to Uttoxeter for training at the pupil teacher traning centre there.

Does anyone know where this traning centre was located and does the building still exist?

Any information regarding the cenre will be gratefully recieved.

Kind regards

Hi Everyone

I am looking for an ancestor of mine who was born as Charlotte Thorpe in 1816 and died in 1900 at Pett, East Sussex.  In 1881 she was unmarried and living with Henry Smith as his housekeeper at Brede.

Can anyone find her in the 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses?

Thanks in advance.

Canada Lookup Request / 1891 Census Lookup Toronto
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 21:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I am looking for my wife's ancestor, Job Watkins, who was born in Herefordshire, England about 1851.  By 1891 he was in Canada, pobably in the Toronto region.  I don't know his wife's name (if he had one) but he had a daughter, Ella Watkins who would be about 6 years old in 1891.

I will be grateful if anyone can find them in the Canadian 1891 census.

Thanks in advance

US Lookup Requests / 1920 and 1930 Census Lookups
« on: Friday 08 September 06 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everybody

Philip John Williams, the brother of my wife's great grandfather emigrated to America in 1882 and became a methodist minister.  I have just received a copy of his obituary that lists all his children that were alive when he died in 1836 and includes married names.  Through Rootschat I have full details of Phillip Williams in the censuses 1910, 1920 and 1930 but I am hoping to trace his children who had left home before 1920 and so hopefully should be recorded in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. The details of his children are as follows (places of residence are as per 1936):

Philip J Williams born about 1896 NY state residing Rochester NY

Charles F Williams born about 1898 NY state residing in Grand Rapids Michigan (still with parents in 1920)

Ruth L Furey born about 1894 NY state residing in Elmira NY

Charlotta Gorman born about 1903 NY state residing in Pulaski NY (still with parents in 1920)

Lilian K Greglison born about 1892 NY state residing in Rochester NY

Please note that because the Christian names of the last two female children were not given I may have accidentally got the married names and places of residence the wrong was round.

I do hope that someone can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Roger
