London and Middlesex / Hannah Asfer bp 1784 (ish)
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 17:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I have a bit of a puzzle (or brick wall) that I'm wondering if anyone else has come across (or similar).
I have a Hannah Asfer marrying George Hall in Horsleydown in 1802. in the 1851 and 1861 censuses Hannah has her birthplace as Christchurch Surrey (which is Southwark).
I am finding difficulty in tracing a baptism for her (or anyone else with surname Asfer for that matter). I've tried different permutations, soundex, * to replace letters, any Hannahs born in that time period (& beyond) and area (& beyond), different genealogy sites (Ancestry, FindMyPast, the Genealogist and familysearch)- zilch. There's Ashfer in Cambridge area earlier than that but no Hannahs/Annas for the relevant period.
Has anyone else been trying to trace her or any of her possible Ancestral family at all? Or even come across the surname (or variants) in their own investigations? I'm just plain old stuck!

Many thanks in advance

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / A double life in Beverley for 10 years?
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi there- be warned it's a bit long winded!

I have been trying (for a few years now) to trace a marriage for a Joseph Anthony (born 1802) and Rghoda Moreton (b 1824). They start a family in 1843 in Beverley and have 5 children there between 1844 and 1850 before travelling to Deptford London and settling there.

I have previously tried to locate Joseph on the 1841 census without any definite success. However there is a Joseph Anthony in Kingston upon Hull of a similar age as a Tanner, living with a ?Letitia (poor quality of document) as a wife of same age and a son Winslow born 1833 (not in the county). Joseph is not with them in 1851 and Letitia/Lella and Winslow are in Beverley- after this they both appear to vanish- I haven't found death, marriage, migration etc.. Joseph (a tanner) in 1851 is at the home of his 'wife' Rhoda's sibling so presumably en route to Deptford. I have found a marriage of Joseph to a Letitia Roberts in Buckinghamshire in 1822 so think this is Josephs first marriage.

So I'm working on the theory that Joseph somehow met Rhoda around 1841ish and they started a life together without the official documentation and continued that way.

Other facts I do know- Joseph was born and baptised in 1802 in Burnham with Ulph Norfolk (his father Giles was around the area as part of his military service- he and his Norfolk wife Sarah Bolding eventually went back to Buckinghamshire- Giles' home county). Rhoda is born in Buckinghamshire and her family are split by the 1841 census (her mother dies when she is 8 ).
Joseph serves in the 6th Warwickshire Foots regiment 1826-1830- is retired due to infirmity. The 5 children born in Beverly to Joseph and Rhoda have their mother as Anthony formerly Moreton.

So my questions are:
Has anyone come across this family in the Kingston upon Hull / Beverley area and able to shed any more light on the possibility that the Joseph for both families is the same?
Is there any parish / newspaper references that may help shed light upon this?
What happens to Letitia and Winslow after 1851?
Am I barking up the wrong tree?????

I know divorce was expensive so prohibitive in a 'poor mans' relationship breakdown so I think a second family chance is possibly what happened here?

Any other bright ideas??

Many thanks in advance

Hi there

I'm hoping someone may be able to look up a marriage licence for me please? I have a marriage for Thomas Arnold and Alice (also known as Anne during childrens baptisms) Waller/Weller in Cuckfield 13th November 1760 by Licence. I'm just trying to work out the reason why (age vs possibly previous marriages although no indication of widow(er)hood on record transcription). All help gratefully recieved

Many thanks

The Common Room / marriage in 1839- parentage????
« on: Thursday 27 July 17 21:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I ordered the marriage certificate of my great x3 grandmother to see if there was a father named on there. She's a Sarah Jones born in Salehurst, Sussex aged 19 years married to a James Golbey (b1816 in Sedlescombe) in Westfield Sussex 1839.
Initially the only Sarah Jones that I have found with a baptism record (via SFHG) was to a Sarah Jones and is baptised at 1 month of age in 1822- the stated abode is the workhouse- no father amed but not stated as baseborn either.
Her marriage certificate has documented a William Jones a labourer in Westfield Sussex. Now unless the Sarah and William Jones from Peasmarsh Beckley jumped parishes for 2 children born at similar times for separate baptisms (which I think is unlikely) and these are the only William and Sarahs I can find for that time frame in the vague area I have some questions:
1- Is it possible Sarah lied about her parentage on marriage?
2- Sarah's mother may have had a brother named William also of Salehurst- could the 1820 Sarah have stated him as a father and got away with it? (I have yet to find a death/burial for the mother Sarah which could have supported family involvement on upbringing if mother Sarah died early)
3- Is Sarah incorrect in most censuses about her birthplace?
To throw into the mix its possible Sarah is descended from travellers of the area..........

Any ideas welcome!!

I'm looking for more information (if any) for a marraige between Thomas Mortimer and MArtha Chandler 14th October 1770 in Woodborough as transcribed in Phillimore parish registers. What I'm after is if it is stated if the couple are of the parish or outside?
Any help would be appreciated.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / John Girdlestone abt 1745-50 birth lookup please?
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

This maybe a tricky one but wondered if a fresh perspective may help. It's a bit long winded but here goes.....

I'm looking to prove / disprove the parentage of John Girdlestone of Little Walsingham (in adulthood at least). I have records of his marraiges in this town to Alice Holdsworth (lake) (1779) and Susannah Hall (1799) and of the baptisms of the children from his 1st marraige thereafter. There does not appear to be Girdlestones in the Little Walsingham records prior to 1733 (records between this and later 1700s not available as fire damaged?) which make me think he moved into the area either as a child or a young adult at some point. There is some thought that an Ishamael Girdlestone is his father and possibly mother a Sarah (these can be easily confused with a family in Wramplingham which is a separate branch). I have seen records of Baptisms for what could be siblings with Ishmael and Sarah as parents in Bramerton in 1750 but having a search in the rough area for a marraige or at least more baptisms means I'm getting no where.
I wondered if anyone else had been down this route and had found anything that might shed some light?

Kent / Marraige for Puxty and Wilson?
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am having difficulties finding a marraige between Alfred Edmund Puxty (born 1883 Flimwell) and a Jane Wilson (I think born about 1880). I have found other Alfred Puxty's but they are not him (I have traced them forwards with their respective families to eliminate them from enquiries). He is also very difficult to find on the 1911 census (no success as yet) although I may have found Jane - thats if she is working as a domestic servant in Bromley at the time and was born in Port Rose, Canarty (sp?) Scotland.
They have a large family starting with Alfred E Puxty in last quarter 1911 in the Sevenoaks area and I have traced their abode from 1921 onwards (Jane in 1919 at a local pub) in Halstead (north of Sevenoaks) in the electors registers upto 1944 when the family were killed through enemy bombing at the consistant address of Lamberhurst Cottages. I cannot locate a marraige on the Scotlands people site either at present so am pretty stuck. I have order the eldest sons birth certificate to try shed more details and this indicates that the family are in the same address in Halstead /Shoreham Sevenoaks from October 1911 at least. I have revisited the 1911 census and also had another trawl through the bmd indexes but still no luck.

Would anyone have any ideas re finding a marraige please?

Thanks

This family are not just distant cousins but were also living on the site that is now my sons scout hut so want to piece together the history for the group too.

Many thanks
