World War One / Royal Engineers South Staffordshire Regiment 1917 - 1919
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I found my grandfather's WW1 records online today and see he was transferred to the above in Sept 1917 to be sent overseas with the BEF - I can't make out whether it was 2nd or 3rd battalion.
He survived the war and was discharged after it ended.
Can anyone tell me anything about this regiment and which battles they fought? Were they at Passchendaele? Any info/tips/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Scotland / Can't find IGI entry in SP?? COMPLETED THANKS!!
« on: Thursday 14 January 10 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Wonder if somone can help me.

My 5xg g/father was Alexander McCall, bap 10 July 1776 in Killin Perthshire, parents James McCall and Mary Campbell.

This is however entered on IGI as Alexander MCDONALD son of James MCDONALD and Mary Campbell.

In other records Alexander is described as "Alexander McCall alias McDonald". Some of his children were baptised McCall but most were baptised McDonald. All went on to go simply by "McCall" in adult life.

I can find Alexander's baptism in the IGI as noted above but I can't seem to find it in Scotlandspeople. Can anyone think why that might be? ???  ???

I understand the McCalls were a sept of Clan Donald.

Clackmannanshire / Campbell/Wylie Clackmannanshire
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 21:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Hope someone can help!

Jean Campbell was I THINK bap 15 Oct 1776 Clackmannan to Peter Campbell and Isobel Wylie.

Jean Campbell married Robert Donaldson 4 Nov 1798. Banns in both Dollar and Clackmannan. States bride in Clackmannan and groom in Dollar (although presumably they got together for the wedding LOL!)

Robert Donaldsons parents = James Donaldson and Margaret Sinclair. He was bap 13 Jul 1772 in
Dunfermline.

Children of Jean Campbell and Robert Donaldson = Betty 1799   Margaret 1801  James 1803 Katharine 1805   Henry 1807   John 1809   Janet 1811.

I am worried I have the wrong parents for Jean Campbell. The names of the children do not fit. What do people think? perhaps her mother was Betty and her father was also James?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Scotland / jacobite lists?
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 21:38 BST (UK)  »
I was at a talk about Jacobites at the Book Festival in Edinburgh today. Mention was made of lists of men and prisoners and correspondence from individual ordinary Jacobite men to be found in the National Archives. I have searched online and can't find anything like that - can anyone help? Thanks in advance
