Aberdeenshire / Virtual tour of Union Street, Aberdeen
« on: Friday 14 November 14 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives have created a new virtual tour of Union Street in Aberdeen, showing shop fronts from the 1970s.  Using a site called History Pin, the photographs have been used on modern Google Streetview, so you can see what was there and what's there now - a lot has changed over the last 40 odd years, but there are still a few similiarities!

The tour can be seen by visiting their History Pin page.

« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives Service is gathering information about awareness and usage of the Archive service in addition to gauging public opinion about initiatives for developing the service over the next five years. We've created a short survey, and would be delighted if you could take 5 minutes to complete our Customer Survey - we welcome all feedback.

The survey can be found at Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives online survey.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact us via email archives[at]aberdeencity.gov.uk or by telephoning 01224 481775.

Many thanks!

Aberdeenshire / Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives Email Address - Problems
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 10:28 BST (UK)  »
This is just a quick message to say that Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives are having trouble accessing their emails following a change of email provider.  Emails sent to archives [at] aberdeencity.gov.uk are being bounced back as undeliverable, and are not getting through.

The Archives would like to apologise for the situation.  Aberdeen City Council's IT department are aware of the problem, and are working on it so hopefully things will be back up and running soon.  We'll let you know as soon as things are.

Again, apologies for the inconvenience at this time.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What are these girls holding?
« on: Monday 18 April 11 10:50 BST (UK)  »
We've been cataloguing some postcards, and came across this one which has us stumped.  What on earth are these girls holding?  Some of the poles have what look like baskets on the ends, some look almost like curtain poles, and some have batons on their laps.

You can see some responses on our Facebook page, where I've also posted this - one is that it could be an early version of the League of Health & Beauty, which began in 1930.  Any other suggestions?  There are no other marks on the postcard.

Banffshire / Macduff Congregational Church
« on: Monday 14 February 11 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am having huge trouble finding out exactly where Macduff Congregational Church (also known as Banff and Macduff Congregational Church) was located.  I don't know if I'm just missing it on old maps, but I can't spot it anywhere.

The church hall appears to have still been used in the 1960s (ish) but I have no idea where it was.  Is anyone able to provide me with some pointers?
