Technical Help / Posting Pictures
« on: Friday 24 June 05 06:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello Experts

I am  aware that this subject has been raised on numerous occasions and have looked up the instructions and followed them to the letter.

I have tried putting forward slashes instead of back ones, lower case letters, deleting spaces and I have even placed a small jpg file directly onto the C drive to eliminate a long path

However no matter what I have tried, an image does not appear when I preview.

Could it be that if I posted instead of previewing that the image would appear, because I noticed this peculiarity a long time ago when doing my profile.

Or, is it something to do with AOL who seem to have a habit of blocking anything that they don't recognize.

I would appreciate your help.

Many thanks

Robert

The Common Room / Clearer Messages Please!
« on: Saturday 18 June 05 17:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Sorry if I am being a really grumpy old man but

Why do people post messages without upper case letters, or reasonable punctuation.

I have found it extremely difficult on occasion to actually make sense out of genuine requests.

Much as I appreciate that everyone doesn’t have a degree in English (I don’t), surely it would not be beyond the bounds of most people’s ability to write down sentences that can be understood.

if i decided to write everything down in lower case letters and didn’t bother to put in any punctuation so that anyone reading it got completely confused about where one sentence started and another finished then i wouldn’t expect that anyone trying to reply to me would be able to decipher what it was that i was trying to say even though i was asking if someone could trace the whereabouts of ggg uncle george smith who married betty jones on the 5september 1103 and had children ann william charles sarah and heaven knows how many more besides.

I don’t mean to sound superior but this ‘texting’ habit would be best kept to mobile phones and not on sensible websites like this.

Apologies to anyone who may feel that I am getting at them, I am not, it is just a general grouse and I am sure that people would get a better response if the messages could be more easily understood.

Regards

Robert

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / 1851 or 1861 KNOWLES, CRADLEY OR LYE
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could have a look for me please at the 1851 / 1861 Census returns for Cradley or Lye, that should appear under Worcestershire.

I am trying to ascertain the PLACE OF BIRTH of Maria, or Mary Knowles, nee Mobberley.

In the 1871 Census RG10/3019 page 40 she was aged 52 and living with husband John Knowles and one son William aged 20.

Older children had by this time left home and an older married son, Caleb Knowles, was living next door with his family.

Maria, or Mary’s place of birth is stated as. ‘Foreigner abroad’ and I believe 'abroad' has been misread in Ancestry.com as Alberta.

Somewhere I have seen the words ‘East India’ but I cannot find out where and am wondering if this could have been a long time ago on an earlier Census when at the time I had no particular interest in the lady.

Any help as to this lady’s origins would be appreciated.

The Common Room / AMERICAN TROOPS IN BRITAIN WW2
« on: Saturday 13 November 04 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
Back in the early forties I was at boarding school and during my time there a number of American troops were billeted in some of the outlying school buildings. We got on well with them and were always cadging chewing gum.

Much later after D-Day, one lone soldier returned, he told some of us boys that all the men who had been billeted at the school, apart from himself, had been killed on the beach.

I have often wondered if it was true and also which units they actually were, a thing I never took much notice of as a lad.

I had occasion to visit Omaha Beach last month and wondered if that was the place where it happened.

Does anyone know of a source where the names of American units in WW2 are listed and where they were billeted

The Common Room / Professional Research Fees
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 07:46 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone give me some idea of what one would expect to pay for professional research.

Obviously I realise that this depends on the type of research requested and on the time involved in searching.

However, without mentioning names or fee I have just received quite a nasty shock at the fees charged for what I would have thought was something fairly simply. As far as I was concerned I had given an exact reference to look at and all I needed was for the researcher to look at it and tell me if it gave certain details.

OK so maybe in my ignorance it wasn't as simple as it sounds and other further searching may have been needed.

Nevertheless I do feel that the fee called for was somewhat extortionate.

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / 1851 CENSUS TIMMINS WORCESTERSHIRE
« on: Sunday 07 November 04 16:08 GMT (UK)  »
Would someone be kind enough to have a look at the 1851 Census to see if they can find SAMUEL TIMMINS born c1805 at CHADDESLEY CORBETT, near KIDDERMINSTER.

He served in India with the 39th Regiment of Foot up until 1845 but was then discharged due to ill health, aged 40.

I already have information that he was then paid a pension but would be interested to know if he appears on the Census in 1851, or subsequently. It is possible of course that he may have died by then. Also there is no certainty that he returned to his home town, he was discharged at Chatham.

Many thanks

Apologies for resurrecting this one yet again. Just a final try to see if it does raise any spark of recognition in someone's mind.

It is the Children or Descendants that I seek, not the Ancestors

They were bombed during the blitz WW2 and Reginald William Sparrow the Father was killed.

Mother was Elsie, born 1903, now deceased.

Children  all born in the 1920-30’s era

Betty

Any knowledge of this family, or individuals, would be appreciated.

Devon / MCWHIRTER, RICE, TROMANS, Plymouth Area.
« on: Saturday 16 October 04 08:50 BST (UK)  »
My family tree contains the names of several people who back as recently as the 1940's lived in the Pymouth area.

The names of McWhirter and Rice were related but the name Tromans is from another branch

Due to older members of the family dying, all links with the family have been lost.

I would love to contact any descendants of these people who think that they may have relatives in the Pedmore, Stourbridge. or Cradley areas of the West Midlands. I have several nice letters received by my Mother back in the war from these relatives in Plymouth with accounts of the bombing and even a small piece of reinforced celophane that was used to put up to the blown out windows.

Christian names of the people on my tree are.

McWhirter John 1853
his wife Emily nee Brettell 1845
Their Children were
Edith 1867
Charles 1873
Frederick 1875
Albert 1876
Robert 1878
Gertrude 1880
Mabel 1881
Rose 1883
Florence 1885

Florence married Arthur RICE
Their Children were
Audrey
Colin. born about 1911. Killed aboard H.M.S. "GLOUCESTER" WW2.
David.  born about 1914. Killed aboard  HMS "HURWORTH" WW2
Philip

The Tromans names as follows
Stanley
Nellie
Their Children were
Barbara
Graham?(not certain on this name)

Please help if you know of any connection with these people.

Thank you
Robert

The Lighter Side / SEARCHING MANIA
« on: Wednesday 13 October 04 14:45 BST (UK)  »
Is this just applicable to me?

Picture this scenario.

I sit down at my computer all fresh and raring to go. My first object being to try and trace Great Uncle John Smith, who I know lived at Sometown in Staffestershire. My best bet is the 1881 census.

After a deal of searching I discover a likely candidate who is just ten years old and living with Dad and Mum and a Brother and two Sisters.

Great stuff, that’s him no doubt about it.

Right now where was he in 1901.

Not too much of a problem there he is aged thirty with a wife, named Theodosia. Good she shouldn’t be too difficult to find.

Next, find their marriage. I look in BMD, then decide Ancestry.com is quicker and swap over that.

No amount of searching reveals anything.

I wonder what Theodosia’s maiden name was.

I go back to the 1881 census and type in the Christian name only, ‘Theodosia’, guessing wildly that she must have lived in the same area.

To my surprise, seven Theodosias appear, but none of them are close to where I think mine ought to be.

Try the Ancestral Search. This time there are over 25 Theodosias. Then I realise I am looking in the USA list and refer back to my own section. There are only two, one in Penzance and the other in John-o-Groats.

Better give up on that search, go back to John. I then discover that I have typed in John Jones, instead of Smith just when I thought I had found something positive.

By this time I realise that I have completely forgotten what it was that I were really looking for and my head is spinning. I have just taken four hours to discover only one fact.

Give up for today. Start again tomorrow.

Let’s have a game of Freecell.
