Durham / what happened to Mary Annie Calverley?
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
Mary Annie Calverley was the daughter of my GreatGrandfather Frederick Clarkson Calverley. She was born in Darlington in 1876 (AKA - Polley). My cousin's daughter (only recently met :)) and myself, have a copy of a diary of my GGrandfather's and it seems he and his daughter had a falling out and lost touch. Mary Annie's mother died when Mary was a very little child and her father never quite got over his wife's death.

Mary Annie left home in her teens and I think I have found her on the 1901 census working as a barmaid in Newcastle (Frederick Clarkson Calverley's mother had family in Newcastle).

From The Diary, it appears Mary Annie's brother - Frederick William Calverley (in the Navy - my Grandad who I never met) wrote to their Dad trying to effect a reconciliation - to no avail.

I would dearly love to know what became of Mary Annie Calverley. Did she marry - does she have decendants out there who I would so love to get in touch with, I have lots of info to share and The Diary is a sad story which may shine some light on how the family came to be seperated.

I hope Mary has a descendant out there who may recognise her in this. Mary's Father came from Mickley in West Yorkshire, to work at the North Road Engine Works in Darlington, where he met and married Annie from Aycliffe - just North of Darlington.

Thank you anyone who can help - Angela

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Looking for Nathaniel Calverley
« on: Wednesday 08 October 08 02:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello West Yorkshire,
Having successfully traced my family back into West Yorkshire (Mickley, Spofforth, Hampthwaite) I arrive at Nathaniel Calverley. He died 1712 (no age given) and he married twice. He was born in Skipton and I think he may have married his 1st wife Anne in Skipton before leaving to live in Hampthwaite.

Me thinks he may have married Anne in 1660s and - by way of a rough guess - was born very circa 1640ish.

Does anyone know if there are parish records available for the 1600s and if so where I may be able to locate them (to view or buy if on fiche/CD).

I have had great success with Hampthwaite and Mickly/Kirkby Malzeard. The Calverley line is full of information but much is confusing and possibly inaccurate ??? - so I am trying to follow a well researched paper/fiche trail before I take too much for granted. :-\

Many thanks for any tips that may be forthcoming  :)  - Angela

England / Callaghans and Edwards in the East End of London
« on: Monday 19 May 08 02:47 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on Thomas Callaghan b. 1864 and Adelaide Edwards b.1864 (birth dates could vary slightly as they are calculated from the census?
Thomas's parents had a shop on Flower & Dean Street and Adelaide's family...(father was Thomas Edwards) - occup. gun maker. lived at Harriets Place on (or off) Fashion Street.  Both streets are close to each other in Spitalfields.

Thomas Callaghan and Adelaide had a child (born on Fashion Street) named William in December 1881 and the couple married in February 1882.

So far so good..I cannot find anything about Thomas or his parents (William and Mary Callaghan b. circa 1844 and 1846 respectively) prior to 1881/1882. Nor can I find anything about Adelaide Edwards (she does not appear with her family prior to her wedding.

After the marriage they turn up on the census at St. Olave, Southwark where Thomas is a dockside labourer and they go on to have three more children... Catherine b.1884, Elizabeth b.1886 and (Adelaide b.1888 who married a Mr Mariner in 1905).

My problem is finding anything about Thomas and Adelaide prior to their 1st born and wedding. I am also struggling to find anything about Catherine and Elizabeth.

So if anyone else searching recognises anything in these names, dates and locations I really would like to hear from you.  The are my husbands ancestors and he thinks the Callaghans where part of the huge migration of Irish families into England, but I have no idea how I could ever find records, as I am not sure any records still exist. The parents, the shop keepers, state on the census they where born in Whitechapel, so it must have been a preceeding generation who left Ireland, or they where not being strictly honest with the census man!

Help - I am up against a brickwall here and putting all my hopes on finding other descendants with more family history passed down to them. ???

This area of spitalfields at this time was a notoriously over-crowded slum district so possibly registration and record keeping became an impossibility. I have only located this bit of info because the birth certificate of William - born Dec.1881 is the only document that has been kept in the family.

Lancashire / Looking for greenhalgh relatives.
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 10:48 GMT (UK)  »
It seems to be harder to find more recent members of the Family tree than those further back in time (no recent census material  :( ). Few of my near family are still living and family history information is sketchy. So here comes a  plea from the heart  to anyone out there who may be looking into their family history.....which we possibly share.

I have traced my direct line back a good way. However, to complete the picture, I would like to move sideways to my Great Grandmother's sister's family as the two families were seemingly close. My G.Grandmother was Elizabeth Ellen Emerson (nee Pollitt), married to Abraham Emerson, living at Lord Street Radcliffe and later Blackpool.

Her sister was known by her middle name Hannah - full name Eliza Hannah Pollitt and married a Mr Greenhalgh in 1902. They had several children and lived in Radcliffe (around the Cross St, Water Lane area). I do not know much about the children - who would be my Great Aunts and Uncles (I think), and all born in the Radcliffe area), but of the names I do know ......There was Edna May Greenhalgh b.1908 who married Mr. McCreary - they lived in Blackpool. Wilfred who married Gertrude (Gerti), Elsie, Ethel and others. it was a large family. My mum (very young at the time and now in her 70's) said two of the girls were excellent bakers and sold cakes from a little shop or house - again in the Radcliffe locality.

If these names mean anything to you, or you recognise anything here, I would love to hear from you as it appears to be a big and significant branch missing from my tree. All the Greenhalgh children I refer to would be deceased now and sadly I never met any of them. My family had moved South to Kent and lost touch. I am in Lincolnshire and have difficulty getting time in Lancashire for reasearch, so would love to hear from a long lost Greenhalgh decendant.

I also have info to share, as the Greenhalgh and Emerson lines meet in Thomas and Elizabeth Pollitt (nee Crook) who married in 1879.  Anyone researching Pollitt and Greenhalgh will know how difficut it can be, as the names are so popular in Lancashire.

Thank you with high hopes  :)  Angela.

Lancashire / where did Rosannah Atkin come from...
« on: Friday 14 March 08 00:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where my ancestor Rosannah Atkin came from.

In the 1861 census she is married to James Crook and living in 'Little Ireland' in Manchester. Back to the 1851 census - she is single and a servant to three elderly sisters in Radcliffe - surnames, Rothwell. This fits with other research.

But in the 1841 census, the only trace I can find is a Rosannah Atkin aged 12  (no other Atkins mentioned) in Pilkington Workhouse (in the Bury area), and working as a winder ( cotton mill?).  Is this my Rosannah and where did she come to the workhouse from??  Her marriage record says her father was William Atkins - a Crofter.

If anyone thinks their research is connected to this family and can throw some light on her story, I would so like to hear from you....fingers crossed.

I'm really stuck on this one and not sure where to look next.. ???
