Limerick / Thomas Sheehan / Sheahan b.abt. 1813 in Co. Limerick
« on: Monday 11 January 10 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking birth or baptismal records for Thomas Sheehan / Sheahan / Sheahen b. about 1813 in County Limerick, Ireland.  This according to his tombstone inscription in Old Chelsea, Quebec, Canada, death date 1865.

He was married to Ann Breen in 1830 in St. Patrick's Parish, Nelson, Northumberland, Canada.  Marriage record does not give parents of either bride or groom, simply states that both are "of Ireland".

1851 Census of Canada lists:
1851/52 Hull, Ottawa County, Canada East (Quebec)
Thomas Sheahen, Carpenter, Ireland, R. Catholic, 39
Anne Sheahen, Ireland, R. CAtholic, 37
Michael Sheahen, N. Brunswick, R. Catholic, 19
Margaret Sheahen, N. Brunswick, R. Catholic, 18
Thomas Sheahen, N. Brunswick, R. Catholic, 15
Mary Sheahen, N. Brunswick, R. Catholic, 13
William Sheahen, N. Brunswick, R. Catholic, 10
John Sheahen, Canada, R. Catholic, 6
Catherine Sheahen, Canada, R. Catholic, 4
James Sheahen, Canada, R. Catholic, 1
Daniel Sheahen, Ireland, R. Catholic, 67 (non-family member)

Any suggestions as to researching births in Limerick would be appreciated.

Perthshire / John Robertson, b. abt. 1824 possibly Perth
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 04:07 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings Rootschatters!

I am searching for the parents and siblings of John Robertson, b. about 1824 in Scotland.  Some family members say possibly in Perth or Galloway, though no one knows for sure.  We know that John emigrated to Canada, where he married Alice Plowman in Port Burwell, Elgin Co., Ontario.  The couple is enumerated on the 1861 and 1871 census in Bayham Township, Elgin Co.

On the off chance that John was still in Scotland at the time of the 1841 and/or 1851 census, I have conducted several searches.  The commonality of the name, and not knowing the names of his parents or any of his siblings is causing me a bit of grief!

Perhaps the names of his children will help other researchers recognize some connection that I have not.  They were all born in Canada (1856-1872).
William Maxwell ROBERTSON
George Edward ROBERTSON
Harry Duncan ROBERTSON
Alfred Mortimer ROBERTSON
Herbert Havelock ROBERTSON
Thomas Bertram (or Bennett) ROBERTSON

I have not been able to locate a death record for John in Canada or the US.  His widow and surviving children appear in Minnesota in the 1881 census.

Any suggestions welcome!

Renfrewshire / History of Braidbar
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 03:53 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestors, Archibald HART and Helen REID HART, were living at "Braidbar Farm" when enumerated on the 1851 census.  A librarian in East Renfrew provided the following description:

Braidbar Farm was in the modern area of Giffnock, which is now in East Renfrewshire Council. East Renfrewshire sits to the south of Glasgow and Giffnock is now a densely populated, quite desirable residential area.

Since at least the 14th century it was part of the Barony of Eastwood which was owned by the Montgomery Family who became the Earls of Eglinton. Braidbar was an old division of the barony and goes back a long way. The name appears on a map of 1747 and would have been a small settlement. By the 1780s, most of the area had turned to enclosed farming and Braidbar Farm was one of the 9 or 10 farms which made up Eastwood. The area was predominantly agricultural. During the industrial revolution Giffnock was not affected as much as other areas in East Renfrewshire where the textile industry took hold. However, during the 19th century several sandstone quarries opened up in the area. The railway came in the 1860s and this really opened the area up to becoming a commuter suburb of Glasgow.

Braidbar was a working farm until 1960/61 when the then farmer Allan Stirling appears to have sold the farmland. The farmhouse survived a bit longer but is now completely gone. The name Braidbar survives in street names and in the name of Braidbar Primary School which stands close to where the farmhouse was.

I would be interested in any additional information and especially photos of the area from any period.

Thanks!
Jane

Renfrewshire / Reid 1804 Cathcart
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 03:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking information on the family of Helen REID of Cathcart, b. abt. 1804.
A search of Scotland's People results in a list of 41 girls of this name born between 1801 - 1806.

The nearest match, if she were born in Cathcart, is:
Helen REID b. 06 Nov 1804 in Cathcart, Scotland.  Parents as John REID and Jean FLEMING.  Other births listed for this couple:
Mary, 23 Feb 1800
John, 16 May 1802
Janet, 24 May 1807

What I know:
Helen REID married Archibald HART, b. 24 Dec 1804 Eastwood parish.  The marriage bann in Cathcart is dated 12 Jan 1824, and in Eastwood 3 Jan 1824.  Her parents are not listed here.

The couple had at least 11 children, the first born in Merrylee, Cathcart parish; most others in Thornlie Abbey parish, Paisley.  The family is found in the 1851 census on Braidbar Farm, Eastwood parish, Renfrewshire.

She died 1886 in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario and her death record shows her age as 80 years, and does not give her parents names.  It only indicates her place of birth as Scotland.

Trying to think of other ways to verify that Helen REID, daughter of John REID and Jean FLEMING is the same as the wife of Archibald HART.  Any suggestions?

Regards,
Jane
