I copied this photo from one of the Australian Cemetery sites after being told by a very distant relative of its existence.

Bob told me that the headstone records the name of the deceased, John O'Brien, his date of death (30 May 1890) and his age at death (39 years).  I don't know if his parents (Michael O'Brien and Margaret, nee Lynch) are supposed to be there or not.

To me it seems there is a verse of some sort also inscribed but I can't make it out.

Could someone have a look and see if any of it can be made out please?

I've been trying for ages to post this, hopefully it will work this time.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Could someone date this photo please?
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 07:17 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received this photo as an email attachment and it is supposed to be of two members of my grandmother's family.

It doesn't ring true to me for a couple of reasons.  The older girl is wearing a wristwatch and a dress very similar to one I had in my "yoof" (in the 1950s), and both girls have short hair.  Also the hemlines seem wrong.

Looking at the girls I guess the ages would be around 10-12 and maybe 13-15?  Given that, and going by the birth year of the younger one (who was identified by the lady who provided the photo), the year should be 1899 and I really don't think that is possible.

If there is someone who could give me a more accurate year for the photo it might help to really identify the subjects.

Many thanks,

Philippa

Australia / From the National Library Canberra, today
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I know this will only be available to people living in or near Canberra, but I thought I'd post it in case it is of interest.

Direct quote:

Our new search engine Trove will be the star attraction at the Library during Library and Information Week.

Answering Your Questions about Trove
Staff will be available at the desk outside the Main Reading Room to demonstrate the features of Trove.
Monday to Thursday 24-27 May

Using Trove for Your Family History
Family historians can access a wealth of resources about Australia and Australians in one search.
Friday May 28, 2.30 pm
Conference Room, free
Bookings: 02 6262 1266 or register online.

The online registration facility is very efficient (but a bit confusing to begin with).  I registered my interest, received an immediate acknowledgement, and within half an hour had confirmation of a place.

Hopefully it will be an interesting session, maybe giving insight into some "tricks" we can use to widen our search options.

Australia / SA birth look-up please
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 21:25 GMT (UK)  »
If possible, could someone with access to 19thC SA births do a date check for me please?

Alexander Bowman and Charlotte Kendall married in Adelaide in 1852 and had 14 children.

I have dates and references for most of the 14, but have just noticed that one of the 12 sons seems to have been left out in the cold for some reason. :(

So the one I'm looking for is Henry, son of Alexander and Charlotte, born SA some time after 1852.

Many thanks,

Philippa

This photograph was found when a distant cousin was helping clear out the family home after his mother's death.

Unfortunately his dad had commenced a decline into dementia at the time and could only remember it was "family".

It was taken in Australia, obviously in a studio because of the background "prop", and we are hoping it show members of my mother's paternal family.  Pinning down a date would be a good starting point.  I don't remember being told there was anything written or printed on it which would help identify either the place or the photographer.

If someone could please help I would be very grateful.

Ireland / O'Brien: Tipperary & Waterford
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 07:21 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first post, so please bear with me (particularly if I've chosen the wrong board!!).

I have recently discovered that the ancestor I have been particularly interested in was actually the son of a convict.  To get "closer" to this person I've embarked on a journey to find out more about his father, the convict, and of course any other information I can pick up along the way.

Background:

Michael O'Brien, aged 36 years, was tried in Clonmen (Cashel in another record), Tipperary on 25 March 1823.  He was sentenced to 7 years' transportation and arrived in what is now Sydney on board the "Medina" on 29 December 1823.  His birthplace is listed as Co. Waterford and his calling, ploughs and shares.

In 1829 Michael appears on a "list of convicts who have applied for their wives and families to be sent to New South Wales at the expense of the Government".  His wife was named as Johanna Hannigan, residing in the Parish of Magillighan, and they had four children.

Questions:

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction so that I can find (ideally) his trial transcript, or alternatively his crime?

Does anyone know how I can discover more details about Michael himself, and/or his wife, Johanna and their children?

Can anyone tell me where is/was the parish of Magillighan?  I have searched high and low and so far had no success.

I realise that some of these questions will have obvious answers, but at the moment I have no idea of where to look.

I will be eternally grateful for any assistance at all, particularly details of online sources, as it's awfully difficult to research Irish records from Australia!!!!

Thanks in anticipation.
