Family History Beginners Board / general question
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 07:24 BST (UK)  »
i havent done family history type stuff for some time and have a couple of quesions.

i have been looking at National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941.... and found an entry of interest to me ...my relative died in 1935 and probate went to as far as in know an unrelated male who is described as 'a police inspector'.. effects of £116

my first question is ... do you think that his death is connected to a criminal matter or not
2nd question is .... can i get the death cert for a death in 1935 or is this too recent ?

Thanks
Iain

World War One / Frederick Smith
« on: Monday 26 July 10 18:31 BST (UK)  »
i visited a relative yesterday who had lots of interesting letters about a relative who died in the 1st world war... it was a photo of a gravestone, and various documents relating to his death including letters of condolence from the chaplain and his 2nd lieutenant.

the grave said Sgt Frederick Smith ; Royal Garrison Artillery: killed in action 3rd November 1917 aged 32: 79th seige battery RGA ; 30106 Sgt F Smith...

Can anyone with the appropriate knowledge tell me what his unit were up to and where they were that day...

 i would be grateful
many thanks iain

« on: Sunday 07 March 10 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have fallen on hard times and cannot afford my Ancestry Subscription anymore.. can someone look something up for me....
On a birth certificate Sarah Maria WALKER was born 21/12/1840. Address living at given as
23, Johns Place, Stepney, Middlesex.... i have had trouble finding this address before. I know the family were not living there at the time as all her brothers and sisters were born in Chelmsford/ Great Burstead area and they are on the 1841 census in Great Burstead. I am interested in the family names of the people living at the above address in 1841 incase they were visiting family at the time...

Family History Beginners Board / Surname 'HOMBURG'
« on: Friday 09 January 09 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to do some research on a family with the Surname 'HOMBURG'.
Specifically a George David HOMBERG who was born 1838 to 1840 in Chelsea area of London. I cannot find anything on the Free BMD and i have only found him on on the later census returns... 1881 i think, cannot find on 1841 and 1851 which would be handy as would hopefully give me parent details and clues as to the famliy origin.

The surname seems rare on all records and i suspect it came from Germany??? or maybe Jewish ???

Anyone with any ideas out there.

Ta
Iain.

Family History Beginners Board / Will
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Good Afternoon all.

I have the Will of Richard Rance Chelmsford, Essex . Proved in the Court of London. Date: 1810.

It is just a few lines under a column ' under £800 ', and does not look like a regular will.
In an index of Essex wills i note that their is a will for a Richard RANCE (Carrier) 1810 in the Chelmsford record office.... i do not have a copy of this but is probably the same man.

My first question; were a particular type of will proved in the court of London.

next question; re the column 'under £800'.............. did the value go up/down in stages, ie, under £1000, under £600 etc etc etc.

Also, I thought Carriers were modest folk unlikely to have had the means to leave monet 'under £800.... mind you £1 is under £800 ?????

Any replies welcome
cheers, Iain
