Armed Forces / USA: C 2 US Cav about 1854-1861
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 07:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone point me in the right direction, please?

My 2x grandfather's obituary states, "He spent the time between 1848 and 1854 in New York and Hoosac mountains.  He went south in 1854 and ran the blockade at Memphis, in 1861, coming north to Iowa and Illinois…."I recently came across a Pension application in Montana (where he moved in 1863 and died in 1905) that states he belonged to C 2 US Cav.  Presumably this is Company C, 2nd US Cavalry Regiment.

Union or Confederate?  I'm assuming the Union side, or he wouldn't be applying for a Pension, would he?  But didn't the Confederates "run the blockade?"

I'd like to find which state he enlisted in and any corresponding information about his time while in...  I've been unable to locate him in the 1860 Census, so this doesn't help...

Any information appreciated!

Anyone heading to St. John's in Halifax?

I've found a listing of a marriage of our Mary CROSSLAND to James BROOK(E), Dresser on 1 July 1818.
Reg. # 129
Abode: Elland

Can anyone do a look-up of the certificate and let me know further information that may be listed on it?  We're hopeful of finding parents' names or names of witnesses...

Thanks from the USA,
Holly

I understand there is a 1960's index of the then standing headstones located at the Woodhouse Cemetery (also known as St. George's Field), now a part of the University of Leeds.

Does anyone know if there is also an index of burials?

I'm looking for family with the surnames ASQUITH, BUMBY, DIBB, and SUTCLIFFE, all pre-1855.

Any help to point me in the correct direction of pre-1855 burials would be appreciated, as I believe the standing headstones in St. George's Field are of a later era...

Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / RAOGK? Anyone have luck with the organization?
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 07:43 GMT (UK)  »
I've sent queries on 6 different occassions through RAOGK ["Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness," an organization on the web].  Only one query yielded a response, and that was a suggestion to ask someone else.

I've seen people here at RootsChat suggest, on occassion, contacting RAOGK for specific questions in a particular area (obituary look-up, etc).

MY QUESTION:  Has ANYONE had success with contacting RAOGK online?  (We ALL do our own version of acts of genealogical kindness for strangers, so I'm not talking about that!)

Or does anyone know of a similar organization that does the same thing (aside from RootsChat, of course!).

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Leeds marriage 1814. Parent's names?
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 03:40 GMT (UK)  »

I've located marriage info on FamilySearch  (IGI batch MO71931/Source 0918378/Printout 6900089) and am hoping that someone with access to the Leeds St. Peter's records can tell me if there is more information, perhaps parents names?

John married again  (IGI Batch MO71933/Source O918384-O018386/Printout 6900089) on 18 Feb 1827 to Grace Hutchinson.

Any information that could point me toward their parents would be greatly appreciated!

Census and Resource Discussion / F. S. / M. S. as occupation in 1841 UK Census
« on: Monday 11 January 10 17:51 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at a page of the 1841 Census, and it appears that there are a lot of younger people (age 15-25) that have occupations listed F.S. (for females) and M. S. (for males).

I'm sure the answer is obvious, but could someone please enlighten me?

Thanks,
Holly

Hello from the USA!

I've located Francis Arthur Brook and wife Clara Brook in 1911 Census in Halifax.  It appears that Francis, born 17 Feb. 1884 died (BMD vol 9/page 2840) in Thurrock, Essex in 1978.  Clara, born 25 JY 1883, died (BMD vol 2B/ page 232) in Bradford in 1974.

I'd love to locate either of their burial locations, but am not sure how to go about doing so.

Can someone point me in a logical direction?

Holly

(I posted a similar query on the Essex Board....)
