South Africa / Special Settlement
« on: Saturday 08 September 12 19:10 BST (UK)  »
I have a family of 4 Leiper brothers and sisters arriving in Durban in 1880 on the ship Nyanza from Southampton. On the record from the Pietermaritzburg Archives there is a note against each of them saying "Special Settlement" They were farmers from Scotland and stayed in the area and are buried in Pietermaritzburg. Can anyone tell me what Special Settlement was or give me any other information about any of the family?

Wigtownshire / Vanishing Family
« on: Monday 28 September 09 14:39 BST (UK)  »
In the 1871 census William Leiper (b c1846) was farming at Balcarry Farm, Old Luce, Wigtownshire and living with his widowed mother Helen(50), younger brothers Andrew(24), Robert(14) and John(7) and sisters Janet(22) , Jane(20) and Helen(17).
By 1881 just William and his mother and sister Janet were there.
By 1891 I can find no trace of any of them - except Janet who was married to Robert Mann and living in Gorbals, Glasgow. Their uncle, Robert Leiper, was now farming at Airyhemming, Old Luce, but none of his brother's children appear in 1891 with him.
Can anyone help me find the missing Leipers or suggest where I might look?

 ??? John

Lanarkshire / Alexander Donaldson - Glasgow Banker
« on: Thursday 18 December 08 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have run to a standstill tracing my Donaldson ancestry. I have Alexander Donaldson living in Glasgow and working at the Ship Bank in 1787 and 1791 and then for the Royal Bank from 1801 to 1830. He married Grizel(Grace) Pollock in Gorbals in May 1803 and 4 of their children were christened in Gorbals. My ancestor, Robert Carrick Donaldson, the middle of the 5 children, I can find no birth record for.
According to the 1841 census Alexander Donaldson was born in about 1771 in Scotland and seems to have died between 1841 and 1848, presumably in Gorbals, Surrey Street or Edwin Place, where his children continued to live.
I have been unable to find any origin for Alexander Donaldson, or for his wife Grizel Pollock. Can anyone please help?

Occupation Interests / Scots Credit Drapers
« on: Monday 24 March 08 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have several relatives born in Ayrshire/Lanarkshire as younger sons of farmers who moved to London to set up business as Credit Drapers around 1890. I believe this was known as the Scots' Trade. Did they import woven goods from the mills in the Irvine valley or was there some other reason why so many went south into such an unlikely business?
